Location: Wauwinet, Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, USA (Wauwinet is 9 Miles from Town at the East End of Nantucket)
Accommodations: House, 4 Bedrooms, 3 Baths (Sleeps 6-8)
Sweeping views of the Atlantic Ocean dominate the great room at "Beachnut" on Nantucket Island, a beach-front, informal, cathedral-ceilinged home. The 22' by 30' Great Room includes a dining and living room area, fireplace and large eat-in kitchen with skylight all looking out to the water. The expansive room easily accommodates large dinner parties of 30 or more and is flanked on either side by 2 master king bedrooms with bathrooms facing the same ocean view. Two bedrooms with twin beds form the rear wing and share a bathroom. The larger has ocean views.
Great, sandy swimming and fishing are right outside your front door 30 ft down the path to the beach. Catch bluefish and striped bass out front or keep an eye out for seals. In the morning you can see the lights of many sports fishing boats that fish half a mile out in deeper waters.
The fireplace in the main room is encircled with a comfortable, oversized couch and plush chairs and the large eat-in kitchen with skylight is totally equipped including some spices. Beachnut has a cozy feel despite the high ceilings and captures the flavor of old Nantucket. Decorated with remembrances of the family's past generations on the island, the space is perfect for 3-4 couples or 2 couples with 2 children each. There are a good number of water-related, Nantucket-themed and other books on the book shelves. Hidden in a corner armoire is the entertainment center with TV and combination DVD/VCR player.

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 1992
My husband Gleed and I met and married on Nantucket Island in 1979 and inherited "Beachnut" in 1992. We live in a small rural town in NY state and go up to Nantucket in June to work on the house and in August to vacation. With our son Fletcher we have all become addicted to our time on the island, the sound of the surf outside our front door, the cries of the seagulls and the view of the ocean outside the windows come to mind when we yearn for the time when we can be there. Gleed is self-employed and I work for a non-profit, literacy organization. I'm in the foreground in this photo in pink sweatshirt across from our son, Fletcher. We were having dinner with good friends from our hometown area last year.
Why the Owner Chose Wauwinet
My husband, Gleed, helped build "Beachnut" for his parents the year we were married in 1979, and built the original beach shack onto which the house was added. We inherited the house in 1992. Gleed spent summers on Nantucket from the time he was born in 1944, so the island is in his blood and in his parents' and maternal grandparents' blood before him. I came to the island in 1975 and sang and cooked in various restaurants as well as making baskets to sell in local shops. I met Gleed at the popular "Brotherhood" in 1978 where I was entertaining the crowd singing folk and sea songs with my guitar.
The Unique Benefits of this House
Wauwinet is arguably the quietest hamlet on the island and the last stop before the fisherman put their cars into 4 wheel and head out to Great Point to fish. We hear no traffic except that of seagulls and the constant sweep of waves onto the shore and the occasional comings and goings along our little road by those who live or rent on tiny Crow's Nest Way. June is especially quiet when many homes are still empty before the high season begins in July. Nine miles from town, and we are happy out at the beach. Our guests love to go to town or to the nearby golf course, but unless the weather is inclement, we'd just as soon stay out at Beachnut and swim, read or fish. We never have to pack a picnic and the wide view of the water is pure therapy!
