Classic Spanish style architecture from the 1920's with private tropical grounds
Location: The Mesa (Beach Area), Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara Area, Central Coast, California, USA (Walk to Beach; Quiet Neighborhood near Downtown!)
Accommodations: House, 4 Bedrooms + No additional sleeping rooms avail, 2.5 Baths (Sleeps 8)
This fully restored, 3000 square foot, 1927 Spanish-style home is the essence of Santa Barbara living. Full of architectural interest including cove ceilings and hardwood floors throughout, this four bedroom stucco home with tile roof features a fully remodeled kitchen, dining room, formal living room, cozy family room with wood fireplace, as well as office and two and a half baths.
The very private master suite sits perched on the second floor and has windows on all four sides with views of the ocean, Channel Islands and mountains. Step out the French doors onto your private roof top deck complete with hot tub! Perfect for those starry nights!
Downstairs, another bedroom with queen bed has large windows on three sides to view the gardens and adjacent outdoor courtyard. The third bedroom with queen bed also opens with Jack and Jill doors to the spacious bathroom with loads of charm. An oversized antique tub, tiled shower, pedestal sink and original ceramic tile floor give this room a lot of character. The sitting room/guest bedroom with trundled day bed (two twin beds)can accommodate two more guests.
The fully-equipped gourmet kitchen, remodeled in 2002, retained the commercial six-burner range with griddle, oven, and broiler. It also features reverse osmosis filtered water, Subzero frig, Miele dishwasher, an assortment of small appliances (toaster oven, citrus juicer, blender, coffee maker etc.) Henckels knives and limestone countertops. For your convenience, a laundry room (with supplies), linens, beach and bath towels are provided.
When you're not out enjoying all Santa Barbara has to offer, you'll enjoy relaxing at home. Outside, you have a six foot adobe walled yard surrounded by lush tropical landscaping on all sides and featuring fountains, sculptures and a rose garden. There's a full size trampoline (with safety net)to entertain kids of all ages. Comfy lawn and porch furniture make it an easy place to pass time. Choose your meal at our outdoor dining area with gas grill or our favorite lunch spot in the enclosed courtyard.
When you're done relaxing, take a short three block walk to the steps to the beach. We often see dolphins and whales when we visit. Walk the beach 15 minutes to the West and have great chowder at a fantastic seafood restaurant, or spend time playing in the water, strolling the beach for shells, or watching the kids play in the waves with the boogie boards we have left for you.
From your home, you can also take a five minute walk to the Douglas Family Preserve - an ocean front public undeveloped area for walking and bicycling. In the other direction, a five minute walk will get you to Lazy Acres, voted among the best Natural/Gourmet stores in the country!
Their deli makes eating home simple and delicious. Our local Mesa Village shopping center (a pleasant 10 minute walk) includes Starbucks, Manhattan Bagel, a pizzeria, Mexican, Thai, Japanese and Chinese food, ice cream and smoothie shop, Drug Store, Grocery Store, fast food and the Mira Bella Salon.
Our local park complete with play structure and swings is a 10 minute walk and good for kids of all ages. A public bus stop is also available just one block from home and which takes you downtown.
Downtown Santa Barbara is just two miles away, and we often ride bikes. Santa Barbara is a very special place. Bordered by the ocean and mountains, it retains it's small community feel while offering all the culture of a much bigger city. Full of activities for people of all ages, its natural beauty draws visitors from all over the world.
As we hope you can tell, ours is a very special home. When built in 1927, it was the 'manor' house of the area. It is still considered by many to be the 'jewel' of the neighborhood. It is our primary residence during the school year, and we've worked hard to make it a comfortable, beautiful and enjoyable place to spend time. We share it during our summer travels, and hope it can make your travels to Santa Barbara even more special.

Owner's Profile
Why the Owner Chose The Mesa (Beach Area)
Since this is the home where we live during most of the year, we put much thought into its purchase. Having lived elsewhere in Santa Barbara, we specifically chose this neighborhood for many reasons - proximity to the beach means we walk the beach almost every day; it's quiet since we don't have the freeway or train tracks nearby like much of SB; it's flat so we can ride our bikes; it has a great neighborhood center and it's close to nature with the Preserve and the beach. Being such a short drive to everything in Santa Barbara is another plus! We love our neighborhood and home and hope you do to while we're away in the summer!
The Unique Benefits of this House
We love waking up to our roof top hot tub while the birds chirp! Then a nice breakfast cooked in our fabulous kitchen, enjoyed in our 'secret garden' courtyard! What a way to start the day! Our private yard is a nice quiet place to enjoy any meal, or just sit on the porch for a cup of tea. Our home has so much character, it's a joy to be here. All this and Santa Barbara too!

We rented this lovely home for a combined vacation/family business meeting. We immediately fell in love with its ambiance. It is obvious this home is well cared for and loved by its owners; we immediately felt relaxed and welcomed. We've rented many vacation homes and have never felt more at home than we did here. The lush, mature gardens and large spaciuos lot create the ultimate in privacy and provided everyone in our group space to spread out and relax. Access to the beach, harbor, downtown and freeway is just about perfect - there is quick access to everything while still avoiding most traffic. The home is very comfortable (great beds) with every convenience (fast internet too). The owners are very nice and are concerned that their guests are comfortable and well taken care of, which is a nice change from having to deal deal with real estate management staff. It was an honor to share this historical home.

We recently spent a week at this beautiful house and loved it. There were five of us, including 3 children ages 6, 4 and 2. The house was extremely well-equipped for a family like ours, whether for a trip to the beach, cooking, home entertainment, etc. The house was spotless and elegant, but still very warm and comfortable. The garden is a true gem-- fully enclosed, but with a hundred spots for the kids to play hide-and-seek. The house is also very conveniently located near a wonderful grocery store (Lazy Acres), restaurants and the beach. A 3 minute drive takes you to other great beaches or downtown Santa Barbara. We appreciated having room to roam, quiet and privacy, but also easy access to SB's main attractions. Also, the owner was always available if we needed anything. This is a great spot, especially for a large-ish family.

The Newman's home is exquisite! We felt so relaxed here, and really enjoyed the beautiful yard, the restaurant-quality kitchen, and the gorgeous decor. The Newman family has thought about every square inch of the home, yard and gardens; it is impeccably decorated, tended, and clean. In fact, it is pretty much the home of my dreams! Some of the highlights for us: The upstairs master bedroom, with its entire wall of windows at tree level, was especially relaxing. The kitchen was top quality all the way, and my husband, who used to own and operate restaurants, was in seventh heaven every time he cooked (which meant even better meals for the rest of us)! In addition, the yard and gardens were incredibly spacious and beautiful. Mature plants and trees created a natural privacy fence, and we felt miles away from the hustle and bustle of the city. That said, we were actually very close to all of the best parts of the city. There were several good grocery stores within a five-minute drive, and downtown Santa Barbara was only ten minutes away. I walked to the beach and the Douglas Preserve every day, and the Arroyo Burro State Beach (our favorite) was only five minutes away by car. Anne Newman was extremely prompt and courteous in every exchange we had with her. She was eager to make sure that we had everything we needed for a great vacation. We had only one small problem--the Internet went down one day--and Anne arranged for a technician to come right away, then followed up with us to make sure that everything went smoothly. Every e-mail I sent her was returned within just hours, and after the end of our stay, our security deposit arrived at our house almost before we did! I enthusiastically recommend the beautiful Newman home to anyone interested in staying in Santa Barbara, and I hope that we can return there ourselves for a future vacation.

We had a wonderful East- West family gathering here. The kitchen is fantastic, esp the huge griddle. There were 4 adults, a 7 and 3 1/2 year old and we had plenty of comfortable space. The kids ( and adults) had a great time on the trampoline, in the hot tub and running around the yard. We were in close proximity to many fun beaches and made great use of the boogie boards, which were provided for us. The bus line to downtown is also within walking distance, which allowed my husband and I to steal the car for the day and head to Los Olivos for wine tasting while Grandma and Grandpa took the kids to a movie, lunch and a great park for the day by bus. We would definitely consider renting again, if we decide to head down this way again.

The Newman's home was a wonderful base for our Santa Barbara vacation. There was plenty of room for our group of 7 to spread out and not trip over each other. The office, den, outdoor sitting area, and back yard each offered spots for privacy when desired, yet the common areas were large enough to accomodate all of us for meals and meal prep. The location of the house is great...blocks from the beach, walking distance for coffee or groceries, and easy access to the highway. And the neighborhood was quiet enough to enjoy evenings outdoors. We would definately recommend the Newman's home to anyone looking for a home away from home type of vacation!

We had a very pleasant stay in the Newman's lovely home. The kitchen was very well equipped and we appreciated the private yard. The separate upstairs master suite was perfect, as there were 4 teenagers with us and they had their own space downstairs; they had a great time on the trampoline when they weren't at the nearby beach. The location was also great for walking to pick up groceries, get coffee, or just to stroll by the ocean. A great spot for relaxing!

This house was spacious, clean , and well maintained. Although large for our family of 3, the house was luxurious compared to staying in a hotel room. The location was very convenient for golf, visiting Santa Barbara, and going to the beach. The Newmans were very helpful and available.

If you are looking for peace, serenity, and beauty with all the amenities of a 4 star hotel, then this house is for you. Hugh yard with flowers, shrubs, and privacy gives one the feeling of being alone. The upstairs master suite is a lovers dream supplied with candles, CD player, hot tub, and views. The kitchen inspired our son, daughter, and spouses to cook gourmet meals every night. We spent every morning at the beach (3 min. drive)soaking up the sound of the surf. There are lots of activities to keep everyone happy and all are very close. This house made our family reunion very special. None of us wanted to leave.
