The Little Sugar River Farm is a vacation rental on a chemical-free farm close to two bike trails. The farm is secluded, surrounded by 2000 acres of wildlife refuge, and ideal for people who want to bike, hike, run, bird, read, and relax.

The guesthouse is less than a quarter of a mile from the 23-mile Sugar River Trail, and five miles from the Badger State Trail. Both trails wind along rivers, through rolling hills, forests, and wildlife areas. Trek hybrid bikes are available for guests to borrow (no charge).

Hiking, biking, eating home-grown vegetables and berries, picking flowers from the gardens, simply relaxing on the back porch watching the cranes and listening to the owls and whip-poor-wills are some of the best ways to spend one's time here. Winter stays offer the possibility of ice skating on our skating pond, cross-country skiing on nearby groomed trails, snow shoeing in the prairies behind the house, or simply relaxing by the wood stove with a good book.

MONEY BACK GUARANTEE: We do not want to take our guests' money if they are not satisfied with what we have to offer. Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2004

My name is Frank Goodman, builder and owner of the Little Sugar River Farm. I was born in New York City in December 1959, and I grew up in suburban Westchester County. When I was 14, I went away to school at Phillips Academy in Andover MA. From there, I went to Dartmouth College in New Hampshire, where I studied French and Spanish. During my senior year, I spent a good deal of time in the wood shop developing skills which would stand me in good stead when it came time to create my home — the Little Sugar River Farm. After a year working on a farm in Mexico, I came to the Midwest in 1987 to study agricultural sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. I never left. Most of my work since that time has been in either agriculture or in the metal working trades.

Why the Owner Chose New Glarus

Southern Wisconsin is a lovely area--close to interesting cities and towns, but peaceful and beautiful.

Because I had always hoped to lead a rural life in a home of my own making, in 1996 I purchased 20 acres of land 30 miles south of Madison. I set out to build my home and create a small organic farm.

The area near the farm is filled with interesting villages, wonderful bike trails, protected wildlife lands, and excellent restaurants. New Glarus is a fascinating Swiss village, and Madison is a vibrant, lively university city.

The Unique Benefits of this House

Hiking, biking, eating home-grown vegetables and berries, picking flowers from the gardens, simply relaxing on the back porch watching the cranes and listening to the owls and whip-poor-wills are some of the best ways to spend one's time here. Winter stays offer the possibility of ice skating on our skating pond, cross-country skiing on nearby groomed trails, snow shoeing in the prairies behind the house, or simply relaxing by the wood stove with a good book.

Perfect for Active Foodies

I spent one night at Little Sugar River Farm -- visiting a friend who was renting the house for the week. As a city-dweller who loves nature, I can honestly say my day at LSRF was one of the best I've had in a long time. My friend and I started the day with a long run on the nearby Little Sugar River path, followed by a breakfast of farm-fresh eggs and tomatoes. The late-summer produce on this organic farm is gorgeous, and I spent a few happy hours harvesting squash, melon, tomatoes, apples, peppers and raspberries. The owners are incredibly generous and encourage you to take your fill. If you love being outside and appreciate the beauty of farm-fresh, organic produce, this vacation rental is not to be missed. I will definitely be coming back.

Wonderful place

We stayed there for 3 nights in July 2011. The pictures don't do it justice, the wood work and design of the house is amazing. Many incredible details. Mirantz reciever with quad Bowers and Wilkins speakers sound incredible throughout the house. Perfect for 2 people for an intimate getaway for for 2 couples to have a great weekend. New Glarus and the brewery is close by, as well as Monticello with the awesome restaurant the "Dining Room". Bikes on site to borrow, and many many miles of wonderful biking trails nearby. Wonderfull all around! It is so so quiet, it was amazing. After living in the city, staying there was a big change. Lying in the comfortable bed at night, it was so quiet my ears were ringing. Wow. All hand made flooring is impressive and every detail is accounted for. Highly recommended for a fantastic getaway from a fast paces life for a few days. Or a week. ::)

Little Sugar River Farm provides a wonderful experience

This place is awesome. It's secluded, quiet and beautiful and the guest house is clean, spacious and provided for more amenities than expected! 6 people (couples) could certainly sleep comfortably here - there is a quite a bit more space than you'd think. The custom woodwork is gorgeous, we loved the kitchen (glassware, cookware, utensils & dishes were plentiful, in good condition and way more than we expected - we like to cook, eat & drink and were pleasantly surprised). 4 bikes in great working condition, nearby trails, 15 mi to New Glarus Brewery, an organic garden & chicken coop (from which we were encouraged to visit & supplement our dinner!), a screened in gazebo and an all around peaceful atmosphere made this 2 hour getaway from Chicago a lovely experience. We are definitely going back!

We'll Be Back

Guest: Julie (Milwaukee, WI)

If any of the following appeals to you, this is where you'll want to stay: A home that is a stunning work of art and architecture, simple and inviting, yet luxurious in comfort and amenities. A back porch where you can watch the sun set over prairie, adjacent to a wildlife refuge attracting all manner of birds and butterflies. Thousands of fireflies to match the stars overhead. Barn swallows swooping around the porch in the mornings. Gather fresh eggs from the chicken coop and berries from the vine. Try to decide which of the hundreds of books and albums you'll want to play while you relax after riding the Sugar River Trail to Brodhead and back (the trail goes through the wildlife refuge). Appreciate what it takes to run an organic farm. My husband and I have stayed at more than 40 B&Bs and vacation rentals in Wisconsin over the past five years. This place is in our top 3...if not number-one. We can't wait to return this winter.

completely relaxing get-away

Guest: Expecting Mother (Chicago)
Date of Stay: 06/06/11 Review Submitted: 06/10/11

My husband and I just returned from a week at Little Sugar River Farm for our "babymoon". At nearly 8 months pregnant, I was looking for a place where we could spend time together relaxing and enjoying each other's company. The farm was perfect! Even with the horrible early June weather (101 degrees one day and 50 and raining the next!) the vacation was everything we hoped for. We rarely left the house, but when we did, there was plenty to do. We did an afternoon tour to New Glarus, Spring Green and Mount Horeb so my husband could enjoy a sampling of local micro-brews. We had an evening date in Madison, which was a quick, 30-40 minute drive. The rest of our time was spent cooking, listening to the amazing record collection at the house, taking baths, naps and watching movies. Every morning, we went to the chicken coop to get fresh eggs for breakfast. I only wish more of life could be like the past week. I would recommend it to people looking for a quiet get-away or for those looking to take advantage of the many bike trails in the area.

Just came back from a weekend over July 4th. Enjoyed so much the relaxation and beauty of the area. The home is filled with light. The back porch swing looks over a prairie with only birds and fireflies and not even a hint of street noise. It is very close to both the Sugar River Bike Trail and the Badger Trail and an easy ride to both so one can leave the car behind. The kitchen was well equipped and a pleasure to cook in as light poured in floor to ceiling windows. So many cozy places to read and each equipped with a perfectly placed reading lamp. A true retreat.

Wanna get away?

Date of Stay: 06/30/10 Review Submitted: 07/06/10

If you love to get away from it all, come to this wonderful farm house. Frank met us when we arrived, gave us the tour of the propertiy, even dug up some potatoes from the garden, along with fresh eggs from the chicken coop. The house is fabulous, we loved to sit outside on the porch swing and relax after a day of bike riding on the local state trail. Near enough to many towns, but far enough away from the hussle and bustle. A real gem!

I am struggling to find the right words to describe our experience at the farm. This is one of the best places we have ever stayed, and the people who run it make it even better !! The environment is just so peaceful and welcoming. The owners have a way of making you feel pampered and at home at all times. The place is just gorgeous - every single detail that was put into this house shows. It is a work of art architecturely. And, it is fully equipped to make your stay even more enjoyable. The fresh produce offered is another personal touch that Frank & Nancy have added. The grounds are beautiful, and the entire place is astefully done. I would recommend this to anyone, and will be going back as soon as possible.

From the moment you step into the guesthouse and see the Kanji wall hanging, you know that you are being welcomed into a harmonious home. Although our January visit was unexpectedly cut short by a home emergency, we thoroughly enjoyed our all- too brief stay. Upon our arrival Frank had a lovely platter of cheese and crackers, a bottle of wine, and some of our favorite laid-back listening music waiting for us. The care and attention to detail that have been lavished upon this home are remarkable. Wood from the property was used for the floors, furniture and cabinetry and the space positively glows with warmth. All of the amenities -- fireplace, oversize couch, bathtub, luxurious bedding, etc. are first-class. It would be hard to image a cozier spot to spend a winter weekend. If you are looking for a quiet, romantic get-a-way Little Sugar River Farm should be on your list. In addition, Little Sugar River Farm is ideally situated for bicycling trips in the warmer months-- something we certainly hope to try. Sarah and Troy

My wife surprised me with a trip to Little Sugar River Farm last year. It was just fantastic. There is a ton to do in the area (you have to drive a bit) or you can just hang out. Just wonderful!
