This was our second visit, on a cold weekend in February. Frank had the fire going when we arrived. Once again my sister in law and her husband joined us. Little Sugar River Farm is unique in its character and location. On this trip we enjoyed sitting close to the fire, reading and catching up. We were also able to "stay in touch" with family, friends and work thanks to the wi-fi. We are looking forward to our next visit when daughter and son-in-law are home from the "old country." They have seen pictures and heard our praise of the Guest House.

I spent one night at Little Sugar River Farm -- visiting a friend who was renting the house for the week. As a city-dweller who loves nature, I can honestly say my day at LSRF was one of the best I've had in a long time. My friend and I started the day with a long run on the nearby Little Sugar River path, followed by a breakfast of farm-fresh eggs and tomatoes. The late-summer produce on this organic farm is gorgeous, and I spent a few happy hours harvesting squash, melon, tomatoes, apples, peppers and raspberries. The owners are incredibly generous and encourage you to take your fill. If you love being outside and appreciate the beauty of farm-fresh, organic produce, this vacation rental is not to be missed. I will definitely be coming back.

This place is awesome. It's secluded, quiet and beautiful and the guest house is clean, spacious and provided for more amenities than expected! 6 people (couples) could certainly sleep comfortably here - there is a quite a bit more space than you'd think. The custom woodwork is gorgeous, we loved the kitchen (glassware, cookware, utensils & dishes were plentiful, in good condition and way more than we expected - we like to cook, eat & drink and were pleasantly surprised). 4 bikes in great working condition, nearby trails, 15 mi to New Glarus Brewery, an organic garden & chicken coop (from which we were encouraged to visit & supplement our dinner!), a screened in gazebo and an all around peaceful atmosphere made this 2 hour getaway from Chicago a lovely experience. We are definitely going back!

If any of the following appeals to you, this is where you'll want to stay: A home that is a stunning work of art and architecture, simple and inviting, yet luxurious in comfort and amenities. A back porch where you can watch the sun set over prairie, adjacent to a wildlife refuge attracting all manner of birds and butterflies. Thousands of fireflies to match the stars overhead. Barn swallows swooping around the porch in the mornings. Gather fresh eggs from the chicken coop and berries from the vine. Try to decide which of the hundreds of books and albums you'll want to play while you relax after riding the Sugar River Trail to Brodhead and back (the trail goes through the wildlife refuge). Appreciate what it takes to run an organic farm. My husband and I have stayed at more than 40 B&Bs and vacation rentals in Wisconsin over the past five years. This place is in our top 3...if not number-one. We can't wait to return this winter.

We stayed there for 3 nights in July 2011. The pictures don't do it justice, the wood work and design of the house is amazing. Many incredible details. Mirantz reciever with quad Bowers and Wilkins speakers sound incredible throughout the house. Perfect for 2 people for an intimate getaway for for 2 couples to have a great weekend. New Glarus and the brewery is close by, as well as Monticello with the awesome restaurant the "Dining Room". Bikes on site to borrow, and many many miles of wonderful biking trails nearby. Wonderfull all around! It is so so quiet, it was amazing. After living in the city, staying there was a big change. Lying in the comfortable bed at night, it was so quiet my ears were ringing. Wow. All hand made flooring is impressive and every detail is accounted for. Highly recommended for a fantastic getaway from a fast paces life for a few days. Or a week. ::)

My husband and I just returned from a week at Little Sugar River Farm for our "babymoon". At nearly 8 months pregnant, I was looking for a place where we could spend time together relaxing and enjoying each other's company. The farm was perfect! Even with the horrible early June weather (101 degrees one day and 50 and raining the next!) the vacation was everything we hoped for. We rarely left the house, but when we did, there was plenty to do. We did an afternoon tour to New Glarus, Spring Green and Mount Horeb so my husband could enjoy a sampling of local micro-brews. We had an evening date in Madison, which was a quick, 30-40 minute drive. The rest of our time was spent cooking, listening to the amazing record collection at the house, taking baths, naps and watching movies. Every morning, we went to the chicken coop to get fresh eggs for breakfast. I only wish more of life could be like the past week. I would recommend it to people looking for a quiet get-away or for those looking to take advantage of the many bike trails in the area.

Just came back from a weekend over July 4th. Enjoyed so much the relaxation and beauty of the area. The home is filled with light. The back porch swing looks over a prairie with only birds and fireflies and not even a hint of street noise. It is very close to both the Sugar River Bike Trail and the Badger Trail and an easy ride to both so one can leave the car behind. The kitchen was well equipped and a pleasure to cook in as light poured in floor to ceiling windows. So many cozy places to read and each equipped with a perfectly placed reading lamp. A true retreat.

If you love to get away from it all, come to this wonderful farm house. Frank met us when we arrived, gave us the tour of the propertiy, even dug up some potatoes from the garden, along with fresh eggs from the chicken coop. The house is fabulous, we loved to sit outside on the porch swing and relax after a day of bike riding on the local state trail. Near enough to many towns, but far enough away from the hussle and bustle. A real gem!

I am struggling to find the right words to describe our experience at the farm. This is one of the best places we have ever stayed, and the people who run it make it even better !! The environment is just so peaceful and welcoming. The owners have a way of making you feel pampered and at home at all times. The place is just gorgeous - every single detail that was put into this house shows. It is a work of art architecturely. And, it is fully equipped to make your stay even more enjoyable. The fresh produce offered is another personal touch that Frank & Nancy have added. The grounds are beautiful, and the entire place is astefully done. I would recommend this to anyone, and will be going back as soon as possible.

From the moment you step into the guesthouse and see the Kanji wall hanging, you know that you are being welcomed into a harmonious home. Although our January visit was unexpectedly cut short by a home emergency, we thoroughly enjoyed our all- too brief stay. Upon our arrival Frank had a lovely platter of cheese and crackers, a bottle of wine, and some of our favorite laid-back listening music waiting for us. The care and attention to detail that have been lavished upon this home are remarkable. Wood from the property was used for the floors, furniture and cabinetry and the space positively glows with warmth. All of the amenities -- fireplace, oversize couch, bathtub, luxurious bedding, etc. are first-class. It would be hard to image a cozier spot to spend a winter weekend. If you are looking for a quiet, romantic get-a-way Little Sugar River Farm should be on your list. In addition, Little Sugar River Farm is ideally situated for bicycling trips in the warmer months-- something we certainly hope to try. Sarah and Troy

We enjoyed a lovely weekend at the Little Sugar River Farm this past August, and the farm, the house, and our host were amazing. I knew i would like Frank when i saw his collection of books, and learned of his multi-faceted personality and set of interests. We had a great time riding bicycles, checking out the area, and enjoying the produce fresh off the plant. I would say this is not for everyone, but is perfectly suited for anyoen who appreciates the earth and its bounty, appreciates a beautifully built home with fine hand crafted decor, and appreciates gorgeous sunsets in a positive, self sufficient environment. I highly recomend this farm to learn about and enjoy something new.

Frank & Nancy: What a delightful stay we had at Little Sugar River Farm. The accommodations were top notch...so clean...and beautiful craftsmanship throughout. Everything we needed was right there to make our stay very comfortable. We really enjoyed your gardens and seeing all the organic fruits and tons of veggies!! We love fresh produce so this was especialy fun and interesting for us. We'll savor the goodies we were able to take home...what a treat! Loved meeting your dogs...Teva was such good company throughout our stay...what a special girl she is. All three are so fortunate to have such a wonderful home. We had a great time biking the Sugar River and Badger Trails on Saturday. (Thanks for the shuttle Frank!) Beautiful weather and some nice spots of fall color along the way. Another great Wisconsin trail system! Those complimentary ice cold bottles of New Glarus "Spotted Cow" sure hit the spot after pedeling 33 miles! And the perfect spot to savor it...out on the back porch swing! Thanks to both of you for a very memorable trip. We'll be back! Best Regards, Michelle & Charlie Cremers

Frank was an amazing host and fabulous cook! The guesthouse itself is a gem. The wood floors and furniture are gorgeous. My favorite feature is the lighting. There are an abundance of windows and the natural light pours in. In the night-time, virtually every light is on a dimmer and there are little reading lamps in all the right places. A perfect retreat from our crazy-city lives. I wish we could have stayed longer and can't wait to go back.

Frank & Nancy - My 30th birthday at the Little Sugar River Farm was absolutely awesome! I can't tell you how much my friends and I enjoyed staying at your guest house - even in the dead of winter! It's a true testiment to the home you've built that we were able to enjoy ourselves so immensely, despite the snow on the ground all around us. You've got a great LP collection that we enjoyed spinning all weekend. I can't wait to come back in the summer when we can take advantage of the nearby bike trails and canoe routes. The fresh eggs, honey, wine and cheese you provided for our group were a wonderful added touch. Our friends who stayed with us are still buzzing about the whole experience...."Where did you hear about this place? When are we going back?" and I must say, I'm not surprised. We had a blast! Thank you so much for making my 30th birthday something to smile about! So far, 30's not that bad! We hope to see you again soon!

Frank and Nancy's farm provides the perfect getaway environment. This was our first trip to the Wisconsin countryside and Little Sugar River Farm made us love every minute of it. The farm just blends in so well with its serene environment! The house itself is an architectural gem and is immaculate (we both happen to be architects). Frank is the most generous and caring host: whether it was olive oil or an extra mattress we were missing, he was there to cater for us in the most relaxed and unfussy manner. This is also a great environment for kids to run around free and safe. There are tons of fabulous attractions in the area, suitable for a day trip. Don’t miss if you are traveling in this area!

I highly recommend you have Frank cook you a dinner as it was one of the many highlights of the weekend. The honey pots de creme were amazing. Just a peaceful relaxing place to spend time with love ones. Cant say enough good things.

We have recommended to all our friends a weekend away here because of the generosity of the proprietors and because of the tranquility of the place. We hope to be back soon to spend some more time cooking great meals and drinking good wine to the Cowboy Junkies while sitting on the porch.

Frank and Nancy - thanks again for a relaxing week. It was our third year in a row and our reservations for next year are already booked. We enjoyed the warm afternoons on the porch swing and were proud to be the first to break in the fire pit in the new gazebo! We're looking for a weekend in the fall to come back to see the changing colors and make use of the wood stove in the living room. We can't say enough wonderful things about the farm and the house - we look forward to coming all year long and the week never feels long enough.

This was the perfect place for my husband and I to relax in style,2.5 hours away yet it felt like we were far from all the rush of daily life. The house was clean and comfortable, the farm itself is charming. We enjoyed the company of the two dogs and appreciated having the owners living next door. We helped owerselves to all the chicken eggs we could eat. I never enjoyed eggs in my life until I tasted these fresh eggs. We cooked in the wonderfully equibed kitchen and enjoyed every fresh bite of fresh farm asparagus, mixed greens and herbs. We would love to come back again for another relaxing weekend or even a whole week

If you are looking for beautiful scenery and life near a nature preserve, this is the place for your perfect vacation. Nothing beats the thrill of seeing a ruby throated hummingbird zip around flowers as you read on the front porch. Later that day two sand hill cranes stretched their necks to check out our biking party as we rode down the railroad bed. Sitting on the back porch swing as the afternoon sun faded was just so peaceful. In a world of extreme noise, the quiet was just what we needed. We would certainly recommend Frank and Nancy's place if you are in a get away from it all mood!

Perfect romantic weekend getaway! Little Sugar River Farm was exactly what we needed for a relaxing trip just a short distance from Chicago. We visited at the end of January, and nothing could be better than reading on the couch, cuddled up by the fire, with the beautiful snowy scenery surrounding us. Frank & Nancy did a terrific job on the house. Everything was perfect - clean (spotless), luxurious (very comfortable bed), and with all the right touches. We took advantage of the surround sound system & the large array of CDs that they have in the house. When we arrived at the house, Frank had a bottle of wine, cheese, and romantic music playing throughout the house. What more could you ask for? We had a great weekend & would highly recommend it for couples who want a quiet and relaxing place with all of the amenities.

We very much enjoyed the bike paths and the bikes provided as well as the trails. The views of the fields and streams and the rolling hills put us in intimate touch with this lovely part of Wisconsin. All in all we experienced a regeneration of spirit and came home with lovely memories to carry with us as we pursue our regular daily chores. Thank you for a great experience. At Little Sugar River Farm, we experienced a wholeness, a merging with the environment that is not possible in the urban setting from which we came. From the hour of our arrival we experienced being one with the woods, the fields, and the organic vegetable gardens. It was nice to know that the woods provided the oak and cherry which were used for the flooring and in crafting the cabinets and furniture. Thank you for giving us permission to harvest vegetables from the gardens and green houses. They were at their peak for eating and the variety and gathering were a special treat. Not in a long time have we eaten such tomatoes.
