Simple, Affordable, Old New England Charm

Guest: Cape Ann Fan (Jackson Hole, Wyoming)
Date of Stay: 11/28/09 Review Submitted: 01/20/10

When you combine what this home has to offer with its extremely affordable rates it has be one of the best values around. There was plenty of cozy living space downstairs and comfortable sleeping quarters upstairs. You won't be wanting for any of the little things, such as coffee or laundry detergent, and the owners created the “Red Book,” a custom-designed guide-book for the area featuring what to do, where to eat, etc, with inside scoops as only locals could convey. A quaint courtyard out back affords views of the ocean, while the surrounding yard is well landscaped with plenty of mature trees and bushes. It’s a practical location for Cape Ann: many beaches to choose from within walking distance or a short drive; it’s away from the bustle of downtown Gloucester and Rockport, yet just minutes away from both; and it’s only a short walk from the small village of Lanes Cove with its coffee shop and post office. There are more modern and higher-end rentals available, but if you’re ready for some simple, affordable, old New England charm, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

The Other Side of Quaint

Upon arrival, we could not enter the rental cottage according to the instructions (lockbox codes) provided by the proprietor. We simply flipped a latch on a rickety side gate (the top of the post came off in my hand) and pulled the slightly stuck back screen door open. I honestly can't remember where we found the keys that opened the sliding door into a lovely little renovated kitchen and spare clean ground floor. As my husband hauled our suitcases up the rickety stairs, I read the instructions and guidelines on the counter, impressed by the attention to detail and commitment to environmental issues. Twenty four hours later, we were not so impressed. My spouse refused to sleep in the very comfortable king size bed for all the noise the AC in the window made, and even @ his height of 5'9" had to crouch in the shower the next morning. (Bathroom not for taller folks!) The bathroom sink had no plug so that one had to use a lot of extra water to wash & rinse properly. We had to tie up the window shade to get enough light in the morning. Shades & windows in other rooms did not function properly (if at all), which is usually the first and most basic method of energy conservation, yes? (BTW, "8" rooms includes sunporch, pantry, bathroom, and/or adorable closet size old schoolhouse computer room.) Inside the cottage are BEACH HOUSE signs, encouraging a visit to Plum Cove, which is a short walk along a busy street to the very small inlet, mostly peopled by divers and young families. The area around Gloucester is beautiful, and you can explore all the surrounding towns in a couple of days. The whale watching is splendid. Some of the "joints" have better food and ambience than the "fine" restaurants. (Two Sisters for breakfast, Captain Hook for supper, & the diner across from the StopnShop. Also, of course, Woodman's in Essex.) Take an early morning hike in the Quarry, but above all, do not confuse Plum Cove with Plum Island, an essential short drive north to a natural preserve and pristine beach that will take your breath away. We admit that the extreme heat that week made us crabby, that the bad water alert was in no way the fault of the owners, and that last year's fabulous Manomet rental (at twice the price) has probably skewered our perspective irreparably.

Very quiet getaway

Very nice quiet home and area. Was a little concerned that there was no landline in the home and my cell phone didn't get reception. Very little. Other than that we had a lovely vacation.

Truely Charming!

Guest: KMBoston (Boston, MA)
Date of Stay: 05/08/09 Review Submitted: 05/23/09

My husband Michael surprised me with a well needed escape from our busy lives in the City to this special place in Cape Ann. This home was delightful, well decorated and appointed with everything you need for a beach vacation. The kitchen is beautiful, and if it weren’t for all the great restaurants nearby, I would have cooked in it every night. The house is so convenient to the beaches and restaurants. We walked to Plum Cove Grind for delicious coconut raspberry scones and lattes to take to Lane's Cove to enjoy the sun rising over the water. We also rented kayaks up the street and paddled around Ipswich Bay. Plum Cove Beach does have amazing sunsets! We walked down every night to appreciate it with a nice Merlot. Thank you for sharing your wonderful home with us. We will be back this Fall!
