Hello, My wife and I have a sugar shack on the Hamakua Coast.
We use it for our personal vacation time. Due to our first child now starting school full time we are putting our home on the vacation rental market. The home is located in the town of Ookala.
It is on 1/2 acres of flat land with a Banyan tree, and a view of the ocean due north. The village was a sugar workers camp and in fact the locals call it a camp not a village.
We put a Splash lap pool on the property above ground for safety reasons, (little ones) it is a 10 x 50 foot salt water pool. The home has a gas range, water purification system, flat screen with surround sound.
The living and cooking areas are connected with a double French door to a outside grill with oven and stove top burner. The bath is large and has a fudo (Asian tub) big enough for an adult or two kids.
The home has a deck on Three sides with off street parking for a boat if you have one. Ookala is 5 minutes from the Laupahoehoe park and the 50' s Cafe, a real gem for those days when you just want someone else to do the cooking.
We are 15 minutes south of Honokaa the gateway town to Wiapio Valley, also has a great movie theater and shopping, and Il Mundo has the best pizza on the Big Island.
We love the 1 minute walk to a park and central location to the most beautiful parks on the island. The bedrooms are very open with French doors to the deck, the kids room has a full bed on the bottom and a twin on top.
All rooms have ceiling fans. We have a property management available if needed.
Thank you for you interest. Eric, Kim, Ivy, and Max.

Wow! Such an amazing trip. I loved staying at the house. It was located in a great spot and everything we needed was there.it was really clean and well organized. I loved being able to wake up to the beautiful flowers outside my window and the ocean in view from the deck. I will most definately be back. We went out everyday and saw quaint villages, waterfalls, coastline, tours, the volcano park, etc. and we still didn't get to see everything! The locals were great...they told us about a locals swimming hole not far from the house and other local spots. My daughter loved the bunkbeds and the swimming pool. She got the greatest nights sleep in the bunk beds and loved getting out of bed and jumping straight into the pool:) She also wants me to mention the super cool sunken tub. All in all a fabulous place to stay...close to most things and right at the mouth of the gorgeous rainforest.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

About the owner: Hello, my name is Kim and this is my daughter Ivy. We are starting school full time and wont be able to stay in hawaii for long periods of time anymore. We are putting our plantation style home on the vacation market. Our family has vacationed here in Ookala 4-6months of the year for the last 5 years and have put a lot of love into our sugar shack. Ivy has a new little brother Max who was born in Feb of 09 in Hawaii. My husband Eric is a property manager, and i am a R.N. Thank you for looking at our add. yours truly kim and ivy.
Why the Owner Chose Ookala:
We came to the Big Island for a last minute vacation before our daughter Ivy was born. We were on the Kona side of the island and meet a wonderful woman at the pool who also sold realestate . My husband is a porperty manager and is always looking. So I found myself going to the Hamakua side of the Big Island . Before i knew it i was staying in a tent with a 5 week old while my husband remodled our new sugar shack. The Hamakua coast is fantastic and Ookala or 'Sunny Ookala' as the locals call it is in a perfect location. 45min from Hilo and 1 hour from Spencer Beach in Kona. The Big Island also has a never ending feeling which we liked. You just cant do everything on the Big Island in a visit or 10 visits so that was a big bonus. Our daughter just loves it and the local children are delightful. We are going to miss our long stays, that always felt like short ones.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
We put in a above ground salt water lap pool. The property is a little over a 1/2 acre. The camp as the locals call it has a big baseball field for kite flying and freezby. Down the street 5 minutes is the Laupahoehoe Park and the 50,s cafe. The town of Honakaa is 15 minutes away and has a great old movie theater and shopping, the best pizza on the island and is the gateway to Wiapio Valley. The star gazeing is breathtaking at night and we can watch the big ships go by. Just a very authentic place.
