Location: Stonington, Deer Isle, Acadia, Maine, USA (Bangor International Airport is an Hour and a Half Away)
Accommodations: Cottage, 2 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 1 Bath (Sleeps 5-6)
Green Head Forge is on 3.5 beautiful acres on the outskirts of Stonington in a comfortable family neighborhood.
It's nestled in the woods among granite ledges and lichen-covered boulders -- there is even an old quarry on the property! There's lots of privacy and winding paths to explore.
Green Head Cove is at the end of the street, and you'd be hard-pressed to find a more picturesque spot than this for launching your kayaks, swimming (brrrr!), or picnicking on the rocks while watching the lobster boats come and go.
Walk a little farther along the cove to Green Head Lobster Company for live lobsters right off the boat! We're just a short walk through the woods to the Farmers' Market on Fridays at the Island Community Center, or head into the village for shopping, art galleries, friendly restaurants and the ice cream parlor, or the Opera House for movies and live shows.
Visit the library or the Community Center for internet access. And don't miss the mail boat to Isle au Haut, or take another scenic boat tour!
The original owners of The Forge were dear family friends, Jack and Harriet Hemenway, who ran the forge and studio. Many examples of Jack's fine iron work remain in the cabin and around the grounds.
We have remodeled the studio into a rustic yet very comfortable two-bedroom cabin featuring a modern kitchen with soaring ceiling and large windows overlooking the trees and gardens.
A microwave oven and coffee pot are included, along with all the cooking equipment you'll need for your stay. The living room has a lobster-trap coffee table, cozy seating, and lots of light from more tall windows.
The bedrooms and bathroom with shower are upstairs. The master bedroom also has a cathedral ceiling and tall windows that make you feel part of the outdoors -- you'll catch glimpses of the harbor and houses along Green Head Cove.
The second large bedroom has a double and a twin bed plus a real treat: a back door that opens onto a little bridge to the yard, where you can sit among the granite boulders and listen to the birds.
In addition to the two bedrooms, we have a cot and an aero-bed available, as well as a port-a-crib and highchair on request.
Our property is a rustic oasis, a peaceful get-away in the fragrant woods.

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2009
We are Richard and Wilda Eaton, lifelong residents of Stonington. Richard is a direct descendant of the first settler of Deer Isle, William Eaton, in the 1700' s. Wilda's family have been fishermen on the island for generations. Richard loves to play golf and enjoys the summer tournament at the Island Country Club. We have a son, Chris, and daughter-in-law, Morgan, who have three children. Our daughter Pam and her husband Andrew have two children. Wilda loves gardening, tending both vegetables and flowers. We are active volunteers on Deer Isle's Memorial Ambulance Corps and the American Legion. And, of course, we always enjoy spending time with our family and friends.
Why the Owner Chose Stonington
The Forge is on a beautiful 3.5-acre site on the outskirts of Stonington. It's nestled in the woods among granite outcroppings and paths to explore. My husband was one of its builders back in 1972, and the owners were dear family friends, who ran the forge and studio. Many examples of the fine iron work remain in the cottage and around the grounds.
The Unique Benefits of this Cottage
Our property is an oasis, a peaceful get-away in the fragrant woods. It's just a short walk to the village and the waterfront, a picturesque cove filled with lobster boats and pleasure craft.

The Forge is a perfect way to enjoy Deer Isle and environs. Private and wooded with easy walks to the farmer's market and downtown Stonington. Very well equipped and with a caretaker like Wilda you will not go without. Perfect for the 2 of us 60 somethings in a quiet, relaxing way. Just as perfect after the family arrived in a more active and cozy way. Plenty of room for us all around that beautiful hand wrought iron and glass table. The Forge is a piece of history of the arts community on Deer Isle. We look forward to our next visit!

The Forge is a great place to stay in Deer Isle. It's walking distance to all the shops and restaurants in Stonington, but set away from the road enough that you feel like you're truly away from it all. We have a 1.5 y.o. daughter and it was great for her, too. She enjoyed playing in the yard, picking wild blueberries, and exploring Sand Beach, which is just a 5 minute drive away. Wilda is a terrific caretaker - she gives you everything you need (including kids' toys, a high-chair, veggies from her garden), but also lets you have all the privacy you deserve on a quiet family vacation. Five stars!
Owner response:Thank you for your wonderful review, It was so nice to meet you glad you enjoyed Green Head hospitality, Hope you will come back another time.

A gem amongst the trees. This is the perfect place to seek peace and quiet back in the natural world. Yet the town beckons with much to do, see & experience within a picturesque and easy walk. The house is very clean, comfortable and well equipped. Everything one needs for a relaxing stay is provided. The graceful work of the former artist/owner adorns the place in inspiring ways. If one wants to really escape and return to the beauty of nature in tall pines, rhythm of tides, star filled night skies, mist at dawn, butterflies, sea breezes and the pace of a lazy summer day this is the place. The owners make you feel most welcome. We look forward to more time there next year.

What a surprise we had when we came to the Forge. The pictures simply do not do it justice. It was within walking distance of the downtown area where we spent our morning watching the lobster boats leave their moorings. Being able to cook our own lobsters from the Red Barn Farm (and the goat cheese...oh and children loved to help with the milking with Marsden and Donna) were a treat! We look forward to coming back next year. Thank you Wilda and Richard!
Owner response:Thank you so much for your review, it was so much fun meeting with you and your family, I look forward to seeing you again next year. I will pass on your fun trip to the farm.

Our family just returned from a relaxing stay at the Green Head Forge. Upon arriving, we were surprised to see all of the unique features of the property! The cottage surpassed our expectations! We were impressed with the open, airy feel of the cottage which is not accurately conveyed through the photos. The kitchen was spacious with a cathedral ceiling, and the bedrooms were filled with lots of natural light from the oversized windows. The cottage was impeccably clean, and the kitchen was well-stocked with anything that you would need to cook. Everything was well organized, making it easy to find. Wilda was helpful, answering questions about the area and making suggestions on where to purchase lobster and fresh seafood. She also shared fresh raspberries and green beans from her garden which were delicious! We enjoyed the scenic beauty of the area and took several nature walks (Scott's Landing, Settlement Quarry, and Barred Island). We also enjoyed visiting the Farmer's Market and attending a show at the Opera House. The location of the cottage couldn't have been better for accessing the town. The only regret that we had was that we were only able to stay for several days. We are already dreaming of a return trip next summer....BUT FOR A WEEK!!!!
