Located across the Wet Mountain Valley from Crestone Peak and Needle, your view of the Rockies stretches 130 miles from the Spanish Peaks to Mt Princeton. Watch a sunset over the Sangres from the hot tub and see the stars pop out of the crystal black sky. Ease inside to the comfy sectional by a crackling fire. Careful, or you may not make it to the sumptuous king bed!

Welcome the sunrise with the aroma of fresh brewed coffee and steaming pancakes, provided for your convenience. Witness the light spilling down the snowcapped Sangre de Cristos from the hand-hewn breakfast nook, as you plan your new day of adventure!

7 of the Colorado's 52 'Fourteeners' are visible from the couch! Two large bedrooms in the upstairs loft overlook the custom river-rock fireplace.

Antelope share the 5 acres with mule deer, prairie dogs, coyotes, and a wonderful variety of birds.

Enjoy all the comforts of home in this modern cabin. A full-featured gourmet kitchen with stainless steel appliances and granite countertops make preparing your favorite meals easy. The layout and furniture is set up for a large group of family or friends.

The downstairs bathroom has a huge triangular Jacuzzi tub with jets and heater; marble shower; and full-sized washer and dryer. Heated floors on both upstairs and down provide soothing warmth. The wood burning fireplace is perfect for s'mores or extra heat.

There is high-speed wireless internet and a sound system for your tunes.

Every season offers unique attractions - summer wildflowers, fall aspen foliage, winter snowstorms, and spring's awakening!

From mild (a stroll down a quiet road) - to wild (Class V Arkansas River rapids) the area offers something for everyone. Our favorite activities include hiking, biking, river rafting, camping, fishing, relaxing, stargazing, shopping, skiing, snowshoeing, and 4-wheeling. ATV and snowmobile rentals are available nearby.

The Wet Mountain Valley is a 'dark skies' community. The heavens above are filled with sparkles due to the high altitude and lack of light pollution.

Nearby Attractions include- Sangre De Cristo Mountains and Wilderness, Wet Mountains/San Isabel National Forest, Royal Gorge Bridge (above!), Royal Gorge Train (below!), Monarch Ski Mountain, Great Sand Dunes National Park, Mission Wolf, and Hardscrabble Pass.

Elin Rusher's ranch at Music Meadows lies directly across the valley. She hosts an authentic horseback adventure on her working ranch - we tried it for the first time in the summer of 2010, and had a blast!

Westcliffe is 10 miles to the north, with a quaint downtown featuring unique eateries, shops, and festivities. It was once the third largest town in Colorado, in contention for the capital. Now, a little over 500 friendly people call it home.

For pilots, the adjacent airport C08 offers self-serve 100LL fuel, and the use of our 60 x 50 hangar with a 4 x 4 Suburban for transportation.

Call or email - we'll help you plan a custom vacation!

What a beautiful place!

What a wonderful host and a wonderful house. The home is very well stocked and the owners are great. Such a fantastic view of the range with nothing but meadow in between. While sitting in the hot tub at night don't forget to look up and check out the stars. The property is close enough to town you don't have to worry but far enough away you can relax. What a wonderful get away! I would recommend it to anyone looking for a relaxing vacation.

Dorito Verde is exactly as described by owner. The owner and I exchanged emails several times and he was very helpful. House has literally everything you could think of. Kitchen is great. Beds are comfortable. I wish this guy managed more properties. Easy access to hiking trails. Great view of the mountains.

Dorito Verde

This cabin is great for families. We have three children and visit Westcliffe often. The owners provide everything you might need and waking up in the upstairs bedrooms are a treat as the windows form a picture of the mountain ranges that surround the valley. It is truly beautiful and peaceful. Our children loved to play outside and in and loved their bedroom. I would highly recommend this cabin for anyone.

Our August 2010 visit

Guest: Max (Knoxville, TN)
Date of Stay: 08/17/10 Review Submitted: 10/22/10

We found Dorito Verde accidentally through another website. We decided to visit and leave our record-breaking hot climate for a week. We are so glad we did! We flew our plane there, then toured the area for a week in a Suburban. We also flew with other people twice as well. We really love that part of the U.S. It was our first visit to the Wet Mountain Valley. The scenery is magnificent, the summer weather is so nice and cool and the unique house was such a neat place to spend a week. We did not want to leave. Very Peaceful and Relaxing!

The Dorito Verde was just what the doctor ordered for my husband and me when we stayed here for a much-needed relaxing weekend away from home. The owner was MORE than accommodating and helpful, and his hospitality can't be matched. I would certainly recommend this cabin as a vacation or weekend get-a-way haven for anyone needing some R & R while enjoying beautiful Mother Nature. We were sad to leave, as our souls were at peace in this tranquil setting.

Flew in for some mountain flying experience. It is a short 45 min hop up the valley to Leadville Lake County airport (the highest airport in North America) and many other high altitude destinations. Stayed the night at the Dorito with the kids, It is very child friendly. The fireplace is very nice to dry the kids’ shoes and gloves after a day of playing in the snow. Dinner in town was great and watched a local artist carve wooden sculpture with a chain saw.

Great place for flyers and non-flyers both. Convience of short drive to town with groceries, restaurants, and other yet secluded enough to enjoy the great view of the surrounding mountains. Fish, 4-wheel, hike, ski, on-and-on.

Spent 2 days at "Dorito Verde" in July 2009. Strange name (until you see the roofline...then it makes sense), but a wonderful cabin with everything you could want, fabulous vistas...what a nice place to "get away!" Hiked along the base of Sangre de Cristos (short drive from "Dorito") and took in the Great Sand Dunes. For those flying in, the valley is easily accessible from the South end (our route)...and the runway/ramps are well maintained (cheap fuel too!).

We had such a wonderful time. The week we were there (July 13-18), there was actually a total of 18 of us. Some of us took tents and camped on the property. It was a wonderful time for the kids...all 8 of them, as well as the adults. We had a great time on our adventures over the 4WD road to the Great Sand Dunes, hiking along the Rainbow trail, hiking in a different spot to were the kids could play in a stream, and just playing around Dorito Verde. Having a grocery store just 15 minutes away was very handy. The sunsets were incredible. The kids loved observing all the nature around, from staring at the mountains, to playing in the dirt, looking at various plants, and catching bugs. The whirl-pool tub was also great for washing all that "fun" off the kids. We loved our week there and would love to go again sometime. Absolutely wonderful!!!
