227 Orchard Hills Drive, Ann Arbor Michigan - Google Maps FLW Palmer House, please see our website "FLWPalmerhouse"
The Palmer House is a multilevel brick and cypress late period Frank Lloyd Wright house, the plan and design of which is based on the equilateral triangle. The house is sheltered by a long broad hipped roof with deep overhangs. The cantilever extending over the terrace is the most dramatic feature of the house. The open interior is fitted with Wright-designed furniture and built-in cabinetry. The Palmer house exemplifies Wright's open, American organic architecture in which all parts are related to the whole and are linked to the environment in an adaptation of form to nature.
In addition to the main house, there is a tea house located on the 2 acres of woodland surrounding the home. The tea house includes a working fireplace, a small kitchen and a bathroom with a shower-over-the toilet.
During your stay, please enjoy complementary tea and coffee, high thread count sheets, feather and non-feather pillows and organic shampoo and conditioner. We are committed to greening the earth and only use organic cleaning products, hand soaps, dish detergent, and laundry soap. Please be advised that there is no air-conditioning (the floors are concrete, the roof blocks direct sun, and the house is surrounded by very large trees and thus the house remains cool).

Original Frank Lloyd Wright Secluded Home with Tea House
Year Purchased: 2009
Why the Owner Chose Ann Arbor
We both graduated from the University of Michigan and while attending school, frequently went on long walks or runs with the Palmer House as our destination. Jeffrey has been a fan of Frank Lloyd Wright since an early age growing up outside of Detroit and Kathryn became a fan while attending the Art Institute of Chicago and exploring the suburbs of Chicago.
Owner's Map of Ann Arbor
We currently live in San Francisco and purchased the house in March 2009. Jeffrey Schox, who is a San Francisco patent attorney, spends several weeks a year in Ann Arbor. When he is not in Ann Arbor, the Palmer House will be available for rent as a guest house and as a meeting location. Kathryn is a yoga teacher and plans to offer both public and private classes in the house a few times a year. Jeff's parents, Sue and Gary Cox are the caretakers of the house.

It was an incredible experience to interact with a Frank Lloyd Wright house in a way that taking a tour does not allow. However, be aware that you are paying for *the experience*. There were several issues that I think should be mentioned. The beds are extremely uncomfortable. I am sure it is not easy to order mattresses to fit, however, it should be a priority. There is a nice, large tub- however the home does not produce enough hot water to even half fill it. While overall the place was in good repair- and it is wonderful to see the original furniture intact, there are some upkeep problems that I felt were unacceptable- a lot of dust in the corners could be overlooked, but the windows in the bedrooms are a huge part of the charm of the home- they should not be neglected as they had obviously been for quite some time. Be careful to check everything thoroughly upon arrival and departure & document, as we were accused of a few things we know were not our doing and a portion of our deposit kept. We enjoyed our visit, however we have been visiting vrbo's for years and feel that for the price point, there are some things that are lacking that should be remedied. We definitely recommend it, just understand you are paying for style/history over comfort.

What a privilege to have the opportunity to stay in this historic house in Ann Arbor, MI. Beautiful 2 acre setting adds to the special character of this perfectly maintained house and grounds with tea house. Every convenience is provided and Ann Arbor is a great place to visit. This was a very special experience which I would recommend to any one who is a fan of Frank Lloyd Wright. A once in a lifetime experience which I hope to do again sometime! Thank you to the owners for sharing this property with us.

We spent two sublime nights at the Palmer House in early April. What a gorgeous and well-maintained jewel in the (small) pantheon of Wright rentals! (We have also stayed at the Seth Peterson Cottage in Wisconsin and the Haynes House in Fort Wayne, and have toured a number of other Wright creations.) The bold design and the way it fits into a wooded knob were absolutely thrilling, and the separate tea house (open in the summer) and the nearby dining and cultural opportunities of Ann Arbor were added bonuses. The kitchen alone was a marvel, with its wrap around shape and lines of bold brick designs. It was incredibly quiet, a hushed space like a cathedral. To top it off, the owners were extremely gracious hosts with a passion for this special place. They attended to the minor issues we alerted them to immediately, and even kept a couple items that were left behind until we picked them up in July. We couldn’t be more grateful that such a treasure is available within driving distance, and that it is being preserved so meticulously.

We reserved this home to surprise my father for his 72end birthday. As a child my father saw a FLW home being built and was always a fan after that, he never imagined he would sleep in one. There is no family vacation we have taken that wowed my 11 year old nephew and my father, but this did! We were only there a few nights so we for the most part skipped Ann Arbor and stayed at this home. Plenty of good food near by.

I am a Frank Lloyd Wright fan and staying in one of his homes was a real treat. The home is beautifully cared for and well stocked. The owners thought of everything even down to the coffee filters. The location is absolutely beautiful and rather secluded. There is no TV so this may be a problem if you are looking to sit in and watch a movie. This was not a problem for me since the wi-fi is fast I was able to download movies and watch on my laptop. The only issue I faced was the weather. I was there at the beginning of March and it was wet and cold. I would love to go back and see it in the spring or summer. I would definitely recommend this to any and all that are visiting Ann Arbor.
