Listowel is a beautiful Heritage Town in the South West of Ireland. It is known as the literary capital of Ireland because of the number of famous playwrights that hailed from the town, Dr. John B. Keane and Dr. Bryan McMahon being the most famous. Every year Listowel hosts Writers Week at the end of May.
The town has a beautiful, scenic, nine-hole golf course overlooking the River Feale. Within one hour drive from Listowel there are ten championship golf courses (Ballybunion 15 minutes, Tralee 25 minutes, and Killarney 45minutes). In nearby Ballybunion, as well as the world famous golf course, it also has a most wonderful stretch of golden beach.
Listowel is famous for its harvest festival of racing in September each year. Visitors to the town can enjoy eating at a variety of top class restaurants. Throughout the year there is nightly performances in St. Johns Theatre (a restored church in the town square). There are many wonderful walks in Listowel particularly along the banks of the river Feale and a visit to the unique Garden of Europe is a must.
