Contact us for details on renting the adjoining apartment to double your space!
Order food from our Sail Inn Cafe where you can dine on the large indoor/outdoor deck while watching the people walk by and viewing the fishing boats. The restaurant's open from 11AM to 7 PM and we can deliver to your room. Some have asked if you can hear anything from the restaurant in the apartments upstairs. The answer is absolutely not - in fact most people love the convenience of the great food and drink we offer and no one has ever mentioned hearing anything below (except the nearby sea lions which they love!)
Eat and surf the net with our WiFi connection at the restaurant, or in your apartment. You'll find the freshest seafood, burgers, Thai food and a full bar for lunch and dinner seven days a week (open noon on Sunday). The restaurant is wheelchair accessible and the outside deck is pet friendly.
The Sail Inn is often described in our guest book as 'the perfect romantic getaway!'
Like they say, 'It's better by the Bay!' Hope to see you here!
Many of the attractions of Newport are either a short walk or drive away. With enough seafood bistros, pubs, cafes, and family restaurants to keep you well-fed for a month, you may never want to leave Newport. There are plenty of antique shops, galleries, and arcades to explore, so rainy days won't be any problem at all. When the sun shines, you can head to South Beach State Park for a guided kayak tour, surf at Agate Beach, play a round of golf, dig for razor clams, or try your hand at deep-sea fishing. Newport has something special to offer every member of your family!

We found this place when we were visiting the bay in 2011. It was so enjoyable to sit outside for a refreshing drink on the restaurant veranda. We decided to come back for a three day stay. We were treated with so much respect and friendliness. The place is so quaint and homey. We enjoyed every aspect of the place and the uniqueness of the spiral staircase. The outdoor views are spectacular and we so enjoyed being in the center of the many activities and shopping. We could just park the car and walk anywhere for shopping and restaurants. The place was very clean and well stocked with utensils and supplies. The new roof will be installed this year and if the owner put an umbrella on the upper veranda, it would be an immediate missile. This is the ocean and there is a breeze at all times. This is an apartment you rent, do the dishes, cook if you want. If it is chocolate on your pillow and someone "fussing" over you - go the the Hilton. We will be back and recommend it to others. It is a nice and fun place and will be a great place for a family.Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

Wow, what a great vacation! Our stay at the Sail Inn on Yaquina Bay was wonderful. Our rental was delightful. If you are looking at this property, you will not be disappointed. It was clean and comfortable, the views were amazing day or night. You are within walking distance of just about anything you might want to do. Or just sit on the spacious deck and take in the sights and sounds of the bay. The food in the Cafe downstairs is delicious..and they will happily deliver it to your room! They are not open for breakfast, but there is a terrific coffee house right next door. David and his wife could not have been better hosts. We loved our stay, and we plan to return!Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

My wife and I spent a couple nights here as part of our honeymoon, and upon our arrival, the owner ( as per my pre-arrangement) had a nice bouquet of flowers and some champagne on ice for us ... this was a nice touch. We did an overall check of our rental when we first arrived, and, on the plus side, we were impressed with the view of the bay and all of the boats. The location is very nice and accurately described. However, on the negative side, there were several things that we took issue with and need to let other potential renters know about and consider before they make a choice to rent at this VRBO ... First off there is no "reserved" parking spot only for the tennants renting either appartment ... a first come situation ... not good. Second - there was a live earwig bug in the middle of our bed between the sheets and I had to have the owner change our bedding immediately. Third - Had to ask for toilet paper which was almost gone when we arrived. These simple items should be stocked. Fourth - overall the rooms were not that clean and somewhat run down ... visible dust and dirt. Fifth - patio deck really needs an umbrella to sit under for those unusually hot sunny days. There was only a bench to sit on ... nothing else. There was some roofing trash in one corner of the deck. Sixth - there is no a/c unit for those hot days ... just ceiling fans. Based on our overall experience, I would probably not recommend this property to a friend or relative. There were a lot of things that need to be done with these appartment rentals to make them much better for renters and I would hope that the owner will take note.Owner response: 1. No reserved parking spaces, but I explained when he arrived that each apartment is guaranteed a space 24hrs a day, that it’s never a problem at night and rarely during the day. If there’s not a space, let us know in our restaurant and we’ll move one of our cars. This has never been an issue for anyone ever before. 2. The earwig? I immediately changed the bedding when he called, never saw the bug in question and didn’t want to ask him to show it to me. Never saw one there before or since either. 3. We don’t open a new roll of toilet paper for every rental. Spares are in the bathroom cabinet. I explain to anyone I meet when they arrive, “If we forgot something, you can’t find it, have any request, or concerns, please call or come down to the restaurant and let us know so we can quickly resolve the issue. 4. We take pride in keeping our apartment neat and clean. We steam mop the hardwood and linoleum floors, dust and wipe down all surfaces and pay particular attention to the kitchen and bathroom. Our décor is not hotel/motel style, more like a home environment. It may not be for everyone, but the website photos show it like it is. No cardboard lids on the cups or bands around the toilet when we clean, but they’re clean. There’s a Holiday Inn Express (and several motels) if you prefer their décor and sterile environment. The overwhelming majority of renters (including those immediately before and after this renter) rave about the charm and uniqueness of our place. 5. Occasional ocean wind gusts could turn an umbrella into a dangerous missile, should it blow off the second floor deck. 3 years of renters here and no one has requested one. Most folks enjoy the warmth of the sun, as our days are rarely hot. There are several chairs and a swinging bench on the deck. The deck is 20’x15’ and yet he complained of a 2’x5’ covered pile of roofing materials for our new roof, in one corner! 6. Air conditioning? The day this renter arrived we had a rare heat wave in Newport, highs in the mid 70’s. There are 2 skylights, a window and a ceiling fan in the bedroom and windows and ceiling fan in the living room/kitchen. Mostly renters want to turn on the gas fireplace in the bedroom, or living room with cool summer nights in the 50s.

This was our family's first stay at Newport, and we will definately be booking with The Sail Inn on our next trip. Our apartment was quaint and cozy... we felt right at home. The view of Yaquina bay from our spacious deck was absolutely goregous. The full kitchen allowed us to stay in and cook if we liked, and the immense video collection... complete with children's movies!!... kept our four year old occupied during down time. Amenities like the jet bath tub and fireplace allowed us to relax and warm up when things cooled down in the evening. Everybody in the restaurant below was courteous and polite, and made us feel welcome. Absolutely wonderful and worth every penny. We will be reccomending the Sail Inn to our friends and will definately be returning!!Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, families with young children, romantic getaway.

A year after a back injury I am finally able to walk more than a few hundred feet with out severe pain and really needed to get away. I usually go to Lincoln City but wanted a change. I ended up here in the Historic Newport Bay area looking around. At one end of this bay area are places that rent condos out, nice but a much longer walk than I am yet able to do to get to the shops and restaurants, and I didn't want to have to look for parking around the shops. So I kept looking. I ended up on the sidewalk next to the Sail Inn, Lodging and Cafe. It wasn't open so I dialed the number on the sign. Seconds later a lady came out the door and I looked at her and said "I think it's me calling you." Chin was happy to answer my questions and took me inside to look at the lodging. I knew I had to come back and stay sometime. My chance came in early May. I came the weekend of the 'super moon'. While I'm still not up to being able to hike yet, I am able to walk the short distance to the shops, Undersea Garden, Ripley's Believe It or Not, and Wax Museum. I am looking now at a fantastick view of the harbor and working fishing boats. It's second and third floor views so well above obstructions and each 'apt' has a huge outdoor deck to sit and watch from. The main floor has a kitchette type area, no oven, full frig, a bar type area with chairs (high so you can see that harbor view) gas fireplace and a futon. Up the spiral staircase is the bedroom area. Two skylights, a small gas fireplace, big bed. Oh, did I mention the jetted bathtub? I have enjoyed my stay so much I talked several friends into joining me here Memorial Day Weekend. If you like water, views, boats, boat tours, seals, sea lions, seagulls, and a crow that likes Sail Inn french fries, this is your place.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, girls getaway, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

We loved this place so much we didn't want to leave! Very spacious but cozy and comfortable at the same time. It was very clean and quiet with a spectacular view! Updated and nicely decorated. The very large deck overlooking the bay was amazing! We did lots of shopping and dining but enjoyed staying at the room and watching the activity below from the deck just as much. We ordered fresh crab from the restaurant below and they delivered it to our room. We will be back for sure!Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

While our stay in Oregon was over Labor Day week, and while we have been singing our praises of the wonderful experience in Newport that the Sail Inn offered us, I am just getting around to posting our great feelings about Sail Inn! Bob and I enjoyed our 2 night stay more than we can express! The charming location delighted us early in the foggy mornings and late at night. From the Texas summer heat, our Labor Day weather there was wonderful. First day of Bay Crab season! We enjoyed appetizers in the cafe below and soon after we checked in upstairs you all treated us royally by serving our order of crab on a beautifully presented platter, right up in our apt. where we enjoyed some of the Oregon wines from wineries we had visited the days before arriving in Newport. Having learned from VRBO that you had 2 apts., we had let another couple of friends know about this post-trip beyond a reunion we had been at in Corvallis, so they booked too and we shared equally in the joy of your home away from home! The patio decks were great for visiting both early and late. Thanks for delightful memories...the sounds of the sea lions, gulls, the view of Rogue Brewery, great dining downstairs, next door and within blocks!! All just wonderful! We'll return and will continue to recommend this great spot to others! Thanks for the memories of a wonderful vacation!Recommended for: Sightseeing, girls getaway, families with young children, adventure seekers, romantic getaway.

My husband and I were looking for a pet friendly vacation rental to take our two dogs to Newport the weekend. I loved that the owner did not charge an unreasonable pet fee. It was just $10.00 per night per dog. They also did not charge any cleaning fees, so this vacation home fit well into our budget. The location is superb. The first night we were there, we walked along the bay front at night, when it was much less crowded by tourists. We ate at one of the Rogue pubs and walked "home" to the 1 bedroom loft-like apartment to our two dogs waiting for us. The next morning I went down to the Sail Inn Cafe below the rental and ordered breakfast to go so we could eat in our room. The staff were friendly and recommended a good beach to take our dogs (which was Agate Beach). The breakfast mess omlet was delicious! We enjoyed a beautiful sunny day at the beach with our dogs. That night, we went to Georgies for dinner and went to the Rogue Brewery to try out some of the brews on tap. We could not have asked for a weekend getaway with our dogs. I would return to this rental in a heartbeat. The only bad part is you have to walk quite a way from the rental to find a grassy area for your finnicky dog to do its business.Recommended for: Sightseeing, pet owners, romantic getaway.

I frequently visit Newport with my mother (86 yrs old) but we have always stayed in the Nye Beach area. This time we opted for something different and rented one of the Sail Inn's apartments overlooking the harbor on Newport's Bayfront. Wow! What a great apartment and perfect location! The first day we walked across the street to the boat selling fresh crab and halibut and bought three live crabs to cook in our nice kitchen. We cooked them up and ate them (with lots of good beer) on our deck that has the best view in town. The beautiful bayfront boardwalk in front of the Sail Inn is great for strolling, dog walking, sight seeing, shopping, restaurants. You can watch the fishing boats coming and going all day and night from the apartment living room. The harbor is very picturesque, but full of real working boats and people--lots of genuine local character yet still very friendly to visitors. The restaurant downstairs is fabulous--best clam chowder on the coast--and the hardworking Hallinger family makes you feel very welcome and comfortable. They will do anything to make your stay a truly great experience. There is a wonderful local coffeehouse next door for early morning espresso on their deck or inside their cozy coffeehouse. Definitely our best trip ever to Newport. My mom really enjoyed it so much more than any of our stays on the beach side--there was just more to do and see and more of a real local flavor.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway, age 55+, families with teenagers.

We visit Newport several times a year and this is "our" place. We found the Sail Inn when we decided to explore the Bayfront instead of staying in a hotel facing the beach. We like it so much better, we've never gone back. There aren't many rentals on the Bayfront. As far as we can tell, the Sail Inn is both the most spacious and the most affordable. It's at the east end of the Bayfront where the shops end and the marina begins. It has a gorgeous view of Yaquina Bay. Out the picture window you see the fishing boat fleet and the new NOAA facility. From the balconey, you see and hear sea lions barking out on the jetty. The Sail Inn has two identical apartments. They are very spacious for two people. Five would fit comfortably, especially if couple were kids. They are newly remodeled with a full kitchen, gas fireplace and couch/TV area. The VCR and bookshelf full of movies is retro cool. You can pick up wi-fi for free from the cafe downstairs. The balconey is huge. It's a great place to sit and watch fishing boats roll back into the marina at the end of the day. Last time we were there, the family in the other unit was barbecuing on the balconey with a grill they brought along. Great idea. The only drawback is that the flight of stairs up to the door and spiral stairs to the bedroom might be difficult for the elderly and impossible for a wheelchair. Most of the best restaurants in Newport are on the Bayfront, literally right outside the door. For dinner, we like Local Ocean (one block away) and Bay 839 and Saffron Salmon, both a ten minute stroll down Bay Street. For breakfast, try the cafe at the Sail Inn or the Coffee House next door. The Noodle Cafe next to Bay 839 is good too. For sushi, drive down to Yuzen in Seal Rock. They have a hilarious twelve foot tall cutout of the owner in the parking lot. The shops along the Bayfront range from great local art and crafts to cheesy tourist junk. You can easily spend an afternoon browsing. The people watching is good on nice days. The candy store has an oldtime taffy maker you can watch through the window. There are several places to buy fresh seafood if you did bring a grill to the Sail Inn. Ripley's and the wax museum are about what you'd expect. Skip the Undersea World and go to the Aquarium instead. It's two kazillion times better. Nye Beach is five minutes away by car. We find it easier and more scenic to just take Bay Street and the road under the bridge instead of going back up to 101. Bring a kite.Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, girls getaway, families with young children, pet owners, romantic getaway, families with teenagers.

Owner info
Year Purchased: 2005
About the owner: I have been a photographer, writer and filmmaker for over 50 years. I have also been involved with the tourist industry for many years, even working as a tour guide in the Amazon and leading the first organized group hikes (for the Sierra Club) on the Machu Picchu Trail in Peru. For the past 15 years I was sidetracked, converting old properties into new businesses. First was the old farmhouse on the edge of Hollywood, CA I bought and converted through a long and very difficult process into the Farmhouse Cafe. I ran this for a few years as a Thai restaurant, but slowly grew more and more disillusioned with the film biz in Hollywood and life in LA and turned my sites toward a more peaceful life in Oregon. I sold my house and restaurant in LA and bought some commercial properties in Newport and a home in the country nearby. Three more long and difficult years of zoning changes, payoffs, red tape and endless dollars spent, we opened the Sail Inn, occupying the upper floors of the Bayfront property in Newport. Having gone through the long and very difficult process of converting a residence to a restaurant in LA I swore to “never again” attempt such a project. Instead I would keep the ground floor space as a retail rental. But while digging ditches and hanging around the building during the three years of construction, I must have had dozens of people stop and ask, “Do you know where Local Ocean is?” (a Bayfront popular restaurant) and I just couldn’t stand it anymore. So began the next one and a half year project to convert that ground level space into the Sail Inn Cafe. The Sail Inn businesses have taken off and are now quite successful. The restaurant is holding its own in very difficult economic times, when many other restaurants have come and gone since we arrived. Hopefully, now that the dust has settled and we have been open for a while, I can once again return to my roots of travel, writing, photography and film during the off season Winter months!
Why the Owner Chose Newport:
Location! Location! Location! I bought this Bayfront property, sight unseen from an internet listing only on the market a few days. I had my broker place an offer and to my surprise it was immediately accepted! It was a small, empty, two story building with an extra lot on one side. I based my decision on its location – that million dollar Bayfront, fishing fleet and harbor view! The view from the deck with ever changing views by day or night!
I love talking to people from all over the world who come to spend a night or have a meal. I love their expression as they enter the apartment and see the view from the living room picture window for the first time and walk out on the deck and up the spiral stairway to the bedroom upstairs!
Walk to Bayfront shops and attractions for an added bonus. Stroll the boardwalk along the bay to see the fishing boats on the docks. Buy fresh fish or crab from the fishermen. Visit the sea lions. Drive along Bay Blvd. to visit the Oregon Oyster Farm for fresh oysters! There’s 4th of July fireworks on the Bay right in front of your apartment and the lighted Boat Parade in December and the view of the large NOAA research vessels docked right across the bay from us. There’s the Newport Aquarium, Rogue Brewery headquarters, Hatfield Science Center, and soon to be completed International Marine Terminal where ocean going tour boats will come and go! Deep sea fishing, crabbing, beautiful, nearly empty State Park beaches, lighthouses, whale watching and more! I can go on, but why not come and discover it yourself!
Proudest moment: I was downstairs working on construction of the restaurant and a family was checking into one of the apartments upstairs. I heard footsteps, running around the apartment and up and down the spiral stairway and a young girl screams, “Mommy, this is the best place we’ve ever stayed in!” Moments like this make it all worthwhile!
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment:
One of the few rental properties right on the Bayfront in Newport. Even fewer rentals have a great view of the commercial fishing harbor, and this is the best! Plus it's a front row seat to the 4th of July fireworks, Lighted Boat parade and several other seasonal events!
