Why the Owner Chose Saugatuck
I fell in love with Glenn, Michigan when visiting a friend. It is a place where time is suspended. The beach goes on forever and at night the Milky Way stretches overhead. My husband, Roger and I like lie on on the deck before the leaves pop out and watch our resident pair of red-tailed hawks wheel overhead. We've seen wild turkey, grouse, pheasants. And yes, Bambi. We see the deer standing on their hind legs to reach the pears on our neighbor's trees. I also love the history of the area. Glenn used to be a stop on the Underground Railroad and that non-judgmental, welcoming attitude survives.
The Unique Benefits of this Cottage
U-pick! Nothing makes me happier than harvesting fruit and vegetables. From June to October there's always something coming off the farm. I freeze enough berries to get me through the winter. Plus there's farm stands and little stands by the side of the road. I feel like Lady Bountiful coming home and unloading the car. If I want to shop or have a nice dinner out, it's just minutes to Saugatuck. We love doing the gallery openings then having a glass of wine at one of the riverfront restaurants.

My friend and I stayed at Hillby Thatch in August and it was just what the doctor ordered! The cottage is so cute, decorated with the most interesting antiques, artwork, and little details through out. The "country" kitchen was perfect for making a big pot of fresh corn on the cob or frying bacon and eggs for a relaxing meal on the huge dining room table. The deck was one of the best places, very private, and with a lovely flower garden, we had hummingbirds and butterflies every time we were out there reading books or drinking our morning coffee. The walk to the beach was short and we rarely saw many other people on the semi private beach. We shopped for groceries while visiting Saugatuck or South Haven (both about 10-15 drive) and enjoyed live music at the little cafe in Glenn. Gaylon was wonderful at communicating, and we are looking forward to returning next year.
Owner response:Dianne has just listed all the things I love about the cottage. And I'm thrilled about the hummingbirds. We've been planting enticing red and bell-shaped flowers for them for years. There's plenty of other birds to watch including hawks and even an occasional grouse. Fall is exceptionally nice because the migrating birds will fly through. There is a preserve about 20 minutes away that hosts thousands of geese on their way south.

I enjoyed two relaxing weeks at this lovely cottage in the woods. I wrote, I read, I played dominos and created art with a friend. I ate fresh berries, I listened to the rain cascade from the leaves to the roof. I listened to the songbirds. I watched as the deer ate the hostas. I walked to the beach to watch the sunsets in Lake Michigan. I was off the grid and in my happy place. If you need to get away, yet have the comforts of home, this is the place for you.

My daughters and I stayed in August. It was quiet and relaxing. We spent quite a bit of time on the trellised back deck and experienced no bugs. It was quiet and the beach was beautiful, especially on our second day when the wind whipped up and there were whitecaps. The beach is closer to 3 blocks away than one, and you walk about 80 stairs straight down. But it was fairly private and beautiful. We watched movies, grilled out, and explored. There are great fruit stands and wineries close by, and we cooled off at Oval Beach when the temp hit 90 (but sleeping back in the cottage was cool and comfortable).

I absolutely love this cottage. It is the classic Michigan sweep-out, but with the essential updates. This little cocoon of a cottage is cozy, warm and comfortable. I enjoyed the free-standing fireplace during my late September visit. The beach is walkable. I recommend it to those seeking some peace and solitude.

August 2009 was our third visit to Hillby Thatch and did not disappoint! The area is beautiful, the cabin clean and comfortable and the setting is beautiful. If you want to get away from television, your lap top, the telephone and enjoy relaxing peace and quiet, yet close to many different kinds of amenities, this is a great place to stay. Saugatuck/Douglas is less than 10 minutes away, the beach is within walking distance and there is consistent QUIET!
