Location: Bolinas, San Francisco Bay Area, California, USA (20 Miles to San Francisco, 5 Miles to Stinson Beach) View Map
Accommodations: Farmhouse, 3 Bedrooms + Loft, 1 Bath (Sleeps 6)
Keywords: Farmhouse & Studio
This one-of-a-kind historic property sits on a beautiful one-acre parcel on upper Terrace Avenue, a quick walk to Bolinas Beach with great surfing (The Patch and The Lefts) and swimming and the quaint coastal village of Bolinas, where you can visit the local art museum and galleries, enjoy barbecued oysters and great local fare at the Coast Cafe, shop for local fresh produce at several farm stands, or beach-comb at some of the best beaches in the area. Beginning in October migrating Monarch Butterflies populate the Eucalyptus grove on the edge of the property.
Surrounded by gardens and meadows and ringed with Cypress Trees, the award-winning farmhouse, while recalling another era, has been extensively restored and updated with many custom-designed features: a large, bright country kitchen with sleeping loft above and dining room with wood stove; a living room that opens to a wide covered front porch and gardens beyond; and a library with French doors that open to a lawn with a brick barbecue and surrounding gardens. The three bedrooms are all on the second floor and include many built-in amenities including a second sleeping loft, dormer windows, a skylight, built-in desks and views of the surrounding gardens. The bathroom includes a claw-foot tub with shower and a separate toilet room with its own basin. The washer and dryer are in a former creamery building a few steps from the kitchen that has been updated to also include a writing studio with desk.
The property combines an incomparable location with deep roots in the area's history. Originally part of the Briones Land Grant and the home of Jose Briones family in the 1860s, the property was part of one of the first dairy ranches in Bolinas. Since then, the property has been owned by the first founders of Bolinas and many distinguished and talented artists and writers.

Wow - what a delight!

I stayed in the Farmhouse in January 2011 with my 3-month-old son on a much-needed break from our daily routine. Susan was kind and generous in letting us move from the barn (alternate lodging option) to the main farmhouse when we realized it was too cold in the barn (and too hard for me to keep the fire going by myself!). We woke to deer roaming the property and took long walks every day. The location is superb - a quick walk to town but up on the ridge for great sunset vistas. The local "liaison" checked on me regularly and restocked wood when we were running low. My son and I took baths every day in the claw-foot tub and played on the floor while the fire warmed the room. The stove in the Farmhouse is amazing - made several great meals with it! I'm so glad I took this opportunity to just spend simple days with my baby - I'll never forget our time at the farmhouse. (*I see that Susan entered some of my comments above, "Christina and Jack", and I wanted to expand on those few words...)

What a great place to escape the valley heat! My girlfriend loved lounging around the cozy farmhouse and our two teenage boys enjoyed watching videos up in the loft. The short walk to town is convenient and scenic. Great balance between classy and comfortable. Nearby oyster farms and beachwalks round out an awesome experience. Can't wait to be back!

We just spent our third Christmas in Bolinas and our second in a row at Susan's wonderful farmhouse. We go there with our 2 large dogs and it is perfect for dogs and humans alike - casual enough that we don't feel we need to monitor the dogs every moment, but stylish enough for us. It is incredibly comfortable with everything needed to relax, cook a full Christmas dinner, and to base ourselves from for local surfing, hikes, and wine tours. Can't wait to return.

My wife and I along with our dog Dexter rented this house for my birthday weekend. We invited some family members who were able to stay. We planned a dinner and a breakfast, and everyone was truly able to enjoy themselves. Especially Dexter in particularly who loved running around in the large yard. The setting of this place is so simple, clean, and picturesque, it allowed us to be in the moment and enjoy one another. Since I surf, I was able to suit up at the property, walk to the beach, and be in the water within 10 minutes tops... also very convenient for non surfers family members to take a stroll on the beach. For dinner the next night I was able to walk into town and grab takeout at the Coast Cafe where I was called by my first name and treated like a local. As for the house itself, it is perfectly located in Bolinas; away from the cliffs, away from the busyness of town, secluded on one acre. Inside the house, we were impressed with the craftsmanship and thoughtfulness that went into the space and details. It was hands down one of the nicest houses we have ever been to. We felt very privileged to stay in such a gem of a place. We'll definitely be back ;) Jesse and Lindsay

We were lucky enough to happen upon this property and can't wait to return! Sometimes photos can be misleading but in this case the property exceded our expectations. The prolific fruit trees on the property and nearby helped us make some of our best pies :-). The owner, Susan, has a fine eye for detail and this was evident in the well appointed decor down to the "green" cleaning products. Our family of four was very comfortable from the first moment we arrived. And whenever we had questions, the owner or her caretaker was very accommodating. Staying within walking distance to town was an added bonus that was priceless. A far cry from our primary residence in Arizona. We can't wait for our return next summer!

My wife and I have stayed at the farmhouse many times; it has over the years hosted us for birthdays, celebrations and family getaways and has become a tranquil secret place that is close to our hearts. The farmhouse is a subtle combination of rural western with tasteful design flourishes all pulled together with a quirky originality; it is a wonderful, lovable and comfortable place. All the rooms are well furnished and pleasant (and small), there are two wood stoves and a ton of nooks and crannies inside and outside to read, think, write and enjoy the lovely garden... If you are having a big group I'd recommend renting the house and the barn together. The house is a short walk to the beach and from there on to Bolinas; it has the advantage of being a little ways off out of town so you don't have to do the full Bolinas tourist thing (this is a big deal in the summer) but is close enough to be convenient. This is the best rental we have found in the area, the owner is delightful and easy to work with; we'd highly recommend farmhouse to anyone looking for something special.
