Why the Owner Chose Canaan
Our farmhouse is in the beautiful Berkshires, about two hours from New York City and Boston. At our house, you can enjoy the peace and serenity of country living, while still a short drive away from all the Berkshire cultural attractions, theaters, restaurants, and ski areas. Our fifty acres are perfect for walks in the woods -- criss-crossed by old stones walls, painstakingly built when the land was farmed in the 1800s. More outdoor explorations available in the Beebe State Forest and Barrett Pond up the road from the house.
The Unique Benefits at this Farmhouse
Our house, which sleeps 12, is perfect for entertaining. The large kitchen has 2 ranges/ovens for cooking marathons. There are multiple dining areas, 2 living rooms, and a pool table -- with room for socializing and room for quiet retreats. Adults and teenagers can co-exist and still have their own spaces. There are books, games, puzzles, and sets for croquet, badminton, volleyball. We have many fond memories of lazy afternoons and evenings cooking and entertaining friends, discussions at the grill and on the deck, and card-game, Monopoly, and Scrabble tournaments.
Owner's Map of Canaan
My husband and I fell in love with this farmhouse from the mid-1800s and its beautiful, quiet setting when we first saw it in 1984. We knew the area well from many visits to the Berkshires and could not resist buying it! In 1991, we added a spacious addition, while preserving the integrity of the original farmhouse. For twenty years, we spent most weekends and summers here. Our kids loved swimming, canoeing, and fishing in Queechy Lake, playing Wiffle Ball on the lawn, and skiing in the winter. We still love the house, but we have college tuitions to pay!

I stayed in this house over New Years and it was so great! Clean and well kept, was easily and comfortably able to accomodate 12 people. Lots of unique collectibles in the house make for interesting decoration. Full kitchen with two ovens and lots of counter space in the new part of the house. My favorite part was their unparalleled collection of movies and board games, both of which kept us occupied for a long weekend with out snow. Highly recommend staying at this house. Can't beat the price!

Charming House for Christmas Getaway

We just celebrated Christmas with our extended family of 10 (3 children, 7 adults) in the farmhouse for 5 nights and thoroughly enjoyed it. The interior of the house is a satisfying combination of spacious rooms with a cozy atmosphere. The wood stoves in both living rooms were very nice to gather around, the kitchen provided more than ample space and utensils for large meal preparations. Although we did not get lucky enough for a white Christmas, we did explore the woods. Following the stream up hill was lots of fun for the older kids, and the swing set and yard toys were a big hit for the little one. When inside, we were presented with an amazing collection of books, movies, and games for all ages plus a piano and a pool table. Nearby (just three miles away) is a lovely conservation area where we enjoyed short trail walks with the kids, and driving through this scenic area of New England provided a nice excursion as well. The owners, Monica & Bill, have a great attention to detail with regard to preparing the house for guests, with provisions such as plentiful towels, sheets, blankets, and pillows, basic kitchen staples (coffee, tea, spices), as well as special touches like Christmas cookie cutters, Christmas tree decorations, Christmas songbooks. We were in want of nothing! It had the comfort of staying at your grandmother's house. Very welcoming. I would definitely recommend this property to others looking for a Christmas getaway.

My two sisters and I and 7(!) children had a wonderful fall weekend here. The photos don't do justice to the house, it's beautiful inside and out, and there was much hiking by the creek and exploring to be done. Also a wonderful library of books throughout for quiet afternoons. We had a blissful bucolic time.

We spent nearly two weeks in August at the Berkshire Retreat. The house was shared by our matriach and 3 siblings with their spouses and children. The house accomodated this crowd beautifully with enough space to spread out. It was perfect for kids with the large lawn, innumerable board games, croquet set, pool table, access to Queechy lake and many bats and balls! The kitchen was also fantastic for cooking and had everything you could possible want to cook with and in. The owners were friendly and helpful and easily accessible. We love the area and had no trouble filling our days with both cultural activities as well as wonderful walks in the woods. Would highly recommend this place for large groups!

My husband, daughter and 3 other small families spent a snowy and perfect long weekend here this past New Year's Eve. The large open kitchen, dining and living room area was great for hanging out and having big family style meals (the kitchen had everything you could ever need to cook with). It was also nicely separate from all of the bedrooms, which were upstairs. A bunk room slept all of the bigger kids easily. Three double rooms were great for couples, though the last room is small and has twin beds (the owner told us, but we decided to give that a whirl anyway, and since we onlly slept in the rooms, it wasn't a big deal). The location was lovely and we enjoyed skiing and sledding not far away mostly driving on beautiful country roads.

We stayed at this beautiful home for a week in the fall with our family and friends for our son's wedding. The house is spacious and large and very comfortable. I was especially happy with the well appointed kitchen. The twenty-somethings were happy with the pool table, basketball and hiking. There was a feeling that you just came home when you walked in the door. We loved the location in the woods, secluded but not too far from several towns, and the sense of history in the house. Everything you might think you would need was provided, and we were even surprised with champagne in the refrigerator to celebrate our son's wedding! Everyone loved the house and we would return in a heartbeat! Wish we could have stayed longer!

My wife and I stayed here to celebrate our anniversary. We had a great time. This house was much more than we expected. It's very 'homey' and welcoming. There's an historic feeling to the place but it has every modern amenity. We were thrilled with the huge kitchen with every utensil one could need for cooking and baking. The yard was great - large grassy lawns surrounded by an airy forest. The house is huge, you could get lost in it. The master bedroom was very comfortable. You feel secluded here, but in a good way, not a "middle of nowhere" way. There are some great hikes just a stone's throw away. We played tennis at Chatham High School, shopped the farmer's market and shops in Lenox, got great food in West Chatham. Everything seemed close, and driving was a pleasure, the roads very scenic. This place was a delight for us.We would come back. Thank you!

My husband and I shared this charming, roomy and rambling old farm house for two weeks in August with an English friend. We both brought our daughters and their small children. It is a perfect place for children for many reasons: the nearby lake for swimming (very safe, with lifeguards and a nice sandy beach); the huge garden area and spacious lawns and play equipment for them; a pool table for all ages; and the owner's kindness in leaving in the house a wonderful selection of games, toys, videos and books suitable for every taste. But in addition, there is always a quiet place for adults to retreat to. The back deck is lovely in the morning, the front porch, facing west, is tranquil and luminous in the evening. The kitchen and the whole house is superbly well equipped, and the master bedroom, especially, is quite luxurious. The whole area is stunningly beautiful and unspoiled, with great walks and quiet back roads, even while the village of Chatham, nearby, has a very sophisticated main shopping street and a first-run 1920s movie house. Overall, this house is perfection for any family or group of friends who appreciate the best of traditional New England rural life combined with every modern amenity. I would strongly recommend this rental and this corner of the Berkshires, which is probably just as beautiful in the fall, winter or spring as we found it to be in the summer

Our family stayed at Berkshire Retreat several times during different seasons. It’s a great place to stay, with plenty of rooms and a wonderful atmosphere. The house is organized in a way that allows for privacy, but also has several large common areas. It was so nice spending our evenings together in the house, and we couldn’t get the boys away from the pool table. It’s a very nice break from the chaos of the city. The property extends back into a beautiful, secluded woodland area with a small creek. The woods are great for hiking, and there’s a lawn between the woods and the house that we loved using for barbecues and family games of soccer or baseball. There are a few ski resorts nearby, so it was a very short drive for us from the house. I’d highly recommend staying there any Our family stayed at Berkshire Retreat several times during different seasons. It’s a great place to stay, with plenty of rooms and a wonderful atmosphere.
