View from french doors down the Pacific Coast from Nepenthe to Ragged Point
Location: Big Sur, Central Coast, California, USA (28.31 Miles South of Rio Road in Carmel, California)
Accommodations: Guesthouse, Studio, 1 Bath (Sleeps 2-3)
"The Hawk's Nest of Coastlands" is a 500 sq ft cottage with bathroom, kitchenette, and exterior hot tub. It has its own private entrance, a private sun deck, and a tiny Zen Garden, backdropped by a view that will take your breath away.
French doors open to an unobstructed view, facing southeast. The visible coastline stretches from Nepenthe Hill to the Big Sur Headlands, then all the way down to Point Lucia (40 miles south as the crow flies). In the foreground is Nepenthe. In the background are the majestic Santa Lucia Mountains. To the South and Southwest, you scan the azure expanse of the Pacific Ocean, 1000 feet below you.
Wake up in bed and watch the sun rise over the Santa Lucia mountains, and then in the evening drink champagne at "golden hour," when the sun paints the hills an unforgettable hue of gilded mauve. Before you go to bed, stare in wonder at the Milky Way overhead, as you stretch out in your own luxurious hot tub. Robes and slippers are provided, and a grape stake fence between the Guesthouse and the Big House affords you complete privacy.
"The Hawk s Nest of Coastlands" has its own kitchenette, with a sink, fridge, coffee maker, toaster-oven, and microwave. The bathroom includes a sink, toilet and shower stall. A Luxurious king-size bed faces the view. In case of a chilly morning, you have your own thermostatically controlled fireplace. A love seat and an easy chair with ottoman face the view. A redwood bookcase contains an excellent collection of the literature, poetry, and history of Big Sur.
We are situated in the epicenter of 4 world-class restaurants. All are within one mile's driving distance from your driveway, and menus of each restaurant are in your room. You can even walk to the landmark Nepenthe Restaurant, the “living room of Big Sur,” – the very same location that Orson Wells once gave as an engagement present to Rita Hayworth, (and which Rita never bothered to visit). Typical outdoor activities in Big Sur include hiking throughout the Ventana Wilderness and numerous State Parks, trips to Pfeiffer or Molera Beach, or gentle strolls up and down the Big Sur River. And, there are many art galleries, antique shops, and gift stores to sate the shopper’s appetite.
Located 28.3 miles south of Rio Road (in Carmel), with access directly on Highway 1, a 100 yard asphalt driveway (also known as Lower Coastlands Road), behind a combination gate leads you to your doorstep.
So come on down, kick back, and get into Big Sur living. You may never forget your nights in Big Sur, the land often called “the greatest meeting of land and sea.”

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 1999
We are a retired couple. We live full time on the same property as the Hawk's Nest. This guesthouse was designed for our extended family and very close friends. We also offer stays as an auction prize for several local non-profits. But, we really enjoy hosting new guests who are celebrating a happy event, like we once did. It is fun to watch them fall in love with Big Sur and all its grandeur. This is so easy to do at the Hawk's Nest of Coastlands.
Why the Owner Chose Big Sur
The Hawk's Nest of Coastlands is perched at the highest elevation of the entire 5 acres, with the most beautiful vista of the Big Sur Coast and Headlands. This building was once a simple garage. It was converted to the Hawk's Nest, not by just a carpenter, but by an artist in the year 2000.
