Keywords: house in a gated resort community on 1 mile of beach
Featured in the April 2006 Cottage Living magazine, "Summerlight" is a charming, luxury artist- and architect- designed home. Decorated with classic mid-century modern furniture and the owner's collection of arts and crafts, this delightful getaway for a couple or family is just steps away from one of America’s top beaches (Conde Nast Traveler). You can touch toes to sand in 3 minutes from the front door !
Summerlight is located in "Carillon Beach - A Village by the Sea," a gated beachfront resort community with no through roads. Carillon is on the far west end of Panama City Beach, away from crowds and noise, but close to conveniences such as groceries, liquor and salon services.
Bright colors, palm trees out every window, the fragrance of the gulf air, sea oats, jasmine and rosemary -- all beckon your senses to enjoy a wonderful respite from the outside world. Spend your time relaxing on the beach, riding bikes to Downtown Carillon for an ice cream cone, or enjoying a glass of wine at sunset. We are right on a 19 mile bike path heading west along the famed 30-A.
Carillon is truly "a world apart,” so beautiful that people just love to walk around and take in the pastel colored houses and listen to the mocking birds. From Summerlight you can’t hear traffic, but you do hear the peaceful swell of the surf. We invite you to visit this jewel-box cottage, but like us, you may never want to leave!

Map & Owner's Profile
Artist's Cottage - at the Beach in Less Than 4 Minutes !
Year Purchased: 2004
Why the Owner Chose Carillon Beach
We moved to New Orleans from Minnesota in 1981 and quickly looked at a map to determine the nearest access to the Gulf. That's when we discovered the Florida Panhandle only a few hours away. We bought land in Panama City Beach because it had the bluest water and the whitest sand -- with the best of both the natural world and daily necessities. There is a three story limit in our community so there is a sense of tranquility. In 2004, we had the opportunity to work with award winning architect Gary Justiss to design and build the jewel-box cottage we had always dreamed about. We bought in early and got a spectacular lot close to the water back when it was pine scrub and palmettos as far as the eye could see.
The Unique Benefits at this House
Carillon is truly "a world apart,” so beautiful that people just love to walk around and take in the pastel colored houses and listen to the mocking birds. From our house you can’t hear HWY 98 (Back Beach Road) traffic, but you do hear the surf. The development is very quiet and the owners and guests are respectful of privacy. The beach is almost empty, except during the high season from June 1 - August 7. We like to walk down the beach to an inlet that flows in and out of Lake Powell to check out the shore life. Sometimes the elusive Bluefish are running the surf and the Redfish are washing into the Lake. A little stream flows in and out and it's a great place for kids. There are a lot of pelicans, turtle nests and terns. Lake Powell is in a wildlife zone/state park so there are no houses to our west for a mile and you can really see what Old Florida was like. The nearby grocery store has fabulous wine, produce and seafood selections and an upscale bakery. World class dining and entertainment is minutes away for the grown ups and the kids enjoy Gulf World Marine Park and Pirate’s Island Mini-Golf. We also recommend the 3-hour cruise across St. Andrew's Bay to Shell Island. Allegedly, the largest night club in the world - Club La Vela is an 18+ ( no alcohol without ID ) club very popular with teens. I spend a lot of time in my first class kitchen cooking the local seafood and lingering over wine at the table with family and friends.
Owner's Map of Carillon Beach
I enjoy painting and the clear light and intense colors on the Gulf inspire me to keep brush or camera in hand 24/7. My husband is inspired by the varieties of fish and bird life. We are from Minnesota but discovered Carillon while living in New Orleans in the '80's. We built Summerlight in 2004. Our 2 kids grew up vacationing all along the panhandle and we are grateful to have put down roots that we can enjoy and share for years to come.
