Property description

This attractive three bedroom home is nestled among the orange and mandarin groves of McKellar Farms. Remodeled in the fall of 2007, the house has central heating and air conditioning, satellite TV, full kitchen, wireless internet access, sun room, and much more. Decorated with original Albert Marshall paintings of the Sierra Nevada mountains, the 6 room house is well furnished and comfortable, with a back porch and pleasant patio looking over the landscaped grounds. The gardens are so attractive that small signs now tell visitors the names of the plants.

In the late 1920's, Hugh McKellar planted seven native Sycamores and began planning the family homestead. His plan was to build a home and buildings out of the native adobe clay, and by 1938, he had created a work building and a wash house over the cistern that would supply water for many years.

Using granite hauled from the Big Meadows area between the Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, he laid out walkways by hand. In 1939, he built the foundation for his home. It was unusual for the times, but Hugh then arranged for his house in Ivanhoe to be picked up, placed on a truck, and moved to the ranch. Hugh McKellar and his wife, Vernice, slept in the home that very night.

Hugh and Vernice had two children, Norene and Robert, and a second house was moved to the property when the two were too old to share a bedroom. Bob's house later became The Bunkhouse for employees, and then in 2006 and 2007 was remodeled and redecorated into an attractive cottage for travelers. In 2013, Bob, now owner and manger of the farm, saw the need for some separate space that would allow the on-site wedding coordinator to meet with brides. The Bunkhouse is now an office and meeting space for wedding consultations.

The lovely grounds are now rented often for weddings, special events, receptions, and family reunions. Bob also gives specialty tours of the farm to house guests and travelers just passing through!

Manager info

Year Purchased: 1927

About: Bob McKellar, owner of McKellar Farms, opened his childhood farm house to the public in 2008. The home was originally in a different location in the small town of Ivanhoe and McKellar's father built a new foundation and moved the family home to McKellar Farms in 1939. Today, Bob McKellar shares the legacy of his family farm tradition with travelers around the world and is passionate about educating visitors about agriculture and family farmers.

Why Ivanhoe:
Bob was born and raised in this home and it holds a special place in his heart. His hope is to share it with travelers from around the world and to give them each a feeling of coming home. The home holds many memories and much history, but it can hold many more! Bring the family, escape with your honey for the weekend, or just take a peaceful getaway on your own. You're sure to walk away relaxed and rested and with your own memories from a wonderful stay at Hummingbird Cottage.

The Unique Benefits at this House:
Guests will enjoy a unique farm setting and will be treated to the wonderful aroma of fresh oranges from the groves surrounding the property. Guests will also have access to a full kitchen, living room, bedrooms, and bathrooms. Upon arrival, guests will be greeted with a basket of fresh local produce. Farmer Bob is also available to chat and give a behind the scenes tour of the property (advanced notice is appreciated!). Hummingbird Cottage is minutes from the cities of Visalia and Exeter, both of which offer a unique arts and culture scene, award winning restaurants, boutique and antique shopping, and more. The Cottage is also just 30 minutes from the gateway to Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park, home to the General Sherman and General Grant Giant Sequoia trees (the first and second largest trees in the world). The National Parks also offer outdoor adventures of all kinds; rock climbing, hiking, mountain biking, cave exploring and more!
