Casa Maare---at pristine Xcacel Beach and so close to Tulum ruins, jungle cenotes, Xelha Eco-park and more--- it's your comfy, cozy home base for a great vacation. Located between Akumal and Tulum, in the Chan Chemuyil fraccionamiento (subdivision) near Xcacel Beach, Casa Maare is furnished in a casual style using natural, sustainable materials such as bamboo with accents of Mexican folk art. The casa has a traditional outdoor pergola for shade in the front, an umbrella table in the back, and beach towels, a cooler, chairs and umbrella to enhance your time at Xcacel beach.
Casa Maare's property managers, Debra and Cowboy, will greet you upon arrival and take you for a tour of the area so you can start enjoying your stay right away. They'll be available in the neighborhood to assist you with activity planning or whatever you might need during your stay.
Casa Maare has all the comforts of home---high thread count sheets, soft towels and a/c. Casa Maare comfortably accomodates 2 - 4 people, with a basic kitchen, indoor or outdoor seating and a sectional couch in the adjacent living area. A stay at Casa Maare is comfort and adventure at an affordable rate.
Casa Maare is situated in a unique community of brightly colored homes populated by locals and Canadian and US expats and part-timers. The neighborhood, Chan Chemuyil, is surrounded by jungle filled with birds and animals and also features two cenotes, one deep enough for a cooling plunge.
Chan Chemuyil is a short walk from the Chemuyil pueblo and the pristine Xcacel beach and cenote, and is just minutes from ocean diving and snorkeling, and the Yucatan's famous cenotes, a system of underwater caves and caverns for the more experienced diver. A short drive takes you to Yucatan adventures of a lifetime---Xel-Ha and Hidden Worlds Ecoparks, the Tulum and Coba ruins, The Jungle Place, and the Sian Kaan Biosphere.

We enjoyed our stay at Casa Maare for 9 days. Me, my husband and our two kids are absolutely charmed by Chemuyil pueblo and the many things to do around. It permited us to feel and live the beat of a little village in Mexico and also visiting and being ''true tourists''! The home was charming and just ok for 4 persons. It was just a little too expensive for what it is, if I compare with other people who rent other houses in the community at the same time.Recommended for: Families with young children, tourists without a car, girls getaway.
Owner response: Regarding pricing for your stay, other homes in the community offer a weekly price that reflects 6 nights while a week price at Casa Maare is 7 nights. Casa Maare also has concierge service---property managers who greet you upon arrival and give you a quick tour to acquaint you with all the area has to offer. And they are available in the neighborhood to assist you during your stay.

Convenient jumping off spot to so many places in and around Tulum but always great to come back to Casa Maare. Friendly neighbors and all the comforts of home. Loved getting to know the folks in Chemuyil - would definitely recommend staying here! Heather was super responsive to all of our inquiries and provided lots of great information about the local area.Recommended for: Families with teenagers, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, tourists without a car, girls getaway, sightseeing.

The house: Perfect little abode with two bedrooms that can comfortably sleep 4 people. The small kitchenette has all the tools one needs to gather the local meats, fruits, veggies and spices and cook up a yummy meal. All the rooms have fans and air conditioning (a must during the hot season). The house has been painted and decorated in the beautiful colors of Mexico with art from around the country. Keep and eye out for the day of the dead skeleton butterfly and dog. Great little bathroom with shower to cool off on the hot days and wash up when ready to hit the night life. The perfect location: The Yucatan noise can drive you nuts at times, but also provides the great night life desired on your get away. Just a few minutes north of Tulum and minutes south of akumal. Lazy mornings we found ourselves walking through the jungle to the quite turtle preserve right across the highway minutes walking. When wanting the local foods jump on one of the bikes and ride into the local village. but when your ready for action its right around the corner. Live music, dancing, diving, fishing, jungle adventures and more are all easily accessed by the house location, but at the end of it all its a private quite home. Oh yes a close to many of the cenotes that will cool you off on the hot days. The local scene: wondering if you should go - heck yea! Swim with sea turtles, visit the beautiful bio reserve Sain ka-an (the best outdoor get away hands down), visit the ruins of Coba and Tulum, enjoy the white sand beaches, Yoga retreats and dance clubs of Tulum and akumal. All in all its a great place for lovers to frolic, a great place for a family get away (totally safe and options for all ages), and for the solo adventurer needing time to meditate on life. (Owner's response: Thanks for the lively review. Really highlights the point that there is so much to do with Casa Maare as your homebase. Regarding noise, the windows are open, the houses in the neighborhood are close together and not far from the main road, the birds get up early and the water truck will drive by offering to deliver to your door, letting you know by loudspeaker that they are in the 'hood. Maybe not what you're used to but just the average bustle of a Yucatan village. Thanks Gouldmund!)Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 2/2

This adorable casita is in a small development a few mile outside of Tulum. Within walking distance of a very nice little village and one of the world's finest beaches, it is a great place to get away from it all. Nicely furnished in typical Mexican style, with two well-appointed bedrooms and an appropriately equipped kitchen, it's a great way to get away from the rat race without giving in to the resort culture. Neighbors are friendly and a few are very knowledgeable about the area and will hook you up for scuba, snorkeling, seeing the ruins, or going to the grocery store. Local cabs are helpful and friendly and a great way to get around if you do not want to rent a car.Did you find this review helpful? Yes | No Helpful votes: 1/1

First the Casa. Attractively decorated, not only by owner but visitors contributing to the ornamentation of this cute little place. Bedrooms are comfy, kitchen is small but great for cooking meals. Outdoor shower was heavenly. There is space to be together or off to yourself. The development is surrounded by jungle, smells good sounds good, loved and miss the geckos. The community is colorful and interesting, the neighbors friendly and the hosts, Debra and Cowboy, awesome. Here is the big and best thing about Casa Maare, location, location, location. This is a great spot to use as a base. Chemuyil, is a nearby pueblo with markets, shops, restaurants and internet cafe. Fresh tortillas and grilled chicken, YUM! Cowboy turned us onto a great place, El RRECIFE Maya, on the main road coming in from the highway. You buy a bucket of beers and you get an amazing assortment of free appetizers with them. We spent our first afternoon eating and drinking there and liked it so much we went back our last day. There are attractions galore, ruins, eco-adventures, beach, cenotes, snorkeling, clubbing, spaing, too much to do-way too little time. Easy trip to Chitzen Itza and Coba, Tulum is just down the road. Speaking of roads watch out for Topes, like massive speed bumps, you will crack your head if you go over one of those too fast. We had a fantastic time but be warned one week is not enough. We went in June, not optimal for beaching, it rained a lot and was very humid (good for your skin) but did not slow us down much. The thunderstorms were incredible If you go that time of year BUGSPRAY is a must. I highly recommend Casa Maare and Chan Chemuyil and cannot wait to returnRecommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, tourists without a car, girls getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: What a great review. Lana and company really get what Casa Maare is all about. Thanks for your thoughts and kind review.

Casa Maare is a great rental! We had a fantastic stay and really loved the casita and all of its ammenities. The house is in a guarded community which made us feel extra safe. Casa Maare is nicely decorated and has absolutely everything you need while you are there. Great for a few friends, two couples or a small family. Heather's recommendations for local places to check out were quite helpful as was the couple down the street, Cowboy and Debra, who came to check in on us and show us around. The house is walking distance from "downtown" Chemuyil which is cute and has a few restaurants, small grocery stores, a bakery and even a tortilla factory. Chemuyil is a friendly town but not "touristy." If you're looking for fine dining and cocktails, you won't find it here, but you will find authentic and delicious Mexican food and cold cervezas. Xcacel beach is also a 12min. walk away and is one of the most beautiful beaches with hardly any other people there. There's a gorgeous cenote at Xcacel as well. The collective buses were fantastic and convenient and you can take these to Tulum for about 20 pesos versus a cab for about 150-200. We didn't end up getting a rental car and we were fine without it! It was a blissful week without tv, phones or internet. I can't wait to come back!Recommended for: Adventure seekers, families with young children, tourists without a car, girls getaway.

Casa Maare is a well equipped and maintained casita and was a perfect size for us ( 2 people). The art work throughout was a pleasure to view. The beds were comfortable. The casita is within easy walking distance of the small town of Chemuyil, the highway for the collectivos, and Xcacel beach which was my favorite beach of the six I visited on my recent trip to the riviera maya. There is no tv or radio so bring reading material. We stocked up on a weeks supply of groceries in Cancun before arriving. The small town nearby has the basics though and don't miss Leo's for pizza.Recommended for: Age 55+, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, pet owners, tourists without a car, girls getaway.

The owners take pride in their condo complex. Our second storey condo was extremely well maintained and well equipped although I missed access to a lemon/lime squeezer,a minor complaint. There is no tv or radio so bring reading material. The condo is an easy walk to town and the highway where the collectivos pass and close to El Camello,a restaurant that became our favorite. You can easily get a taxi to the beach. The terrace was our favorite spot, spacious with comfortable outdoor furniture. The grounds are gorgeous and the small pool is perfect for cooling off. We spent a relaxing week here and would return in a minute. Thanks to our gracious hosts,Alessandra and Thomaso.Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, pet owners, families with young children, tourists without a car, girls getaway, sightseeing.
Owner response: oops, Gail stayed at a couple of different places and this review is for another one. but her review of Casa Maare is also listed. Thanks Gail!

My wife and I have just returned from a wonderful stay at Casa Maare. The bed was comfy, the kitchen well-equipped, the store of magazines and dvd's very helpful, the property managers responsive and helpful, and the ambiance of the casita itself a delight. We're birders, and it was a special pleasure to find that Casa Maare is just across the street from the jungle, and, of all the places where we tried birding during out stay, our own front yard proved the best. We also enjoyed the short walk to Chemuyil, where local folks were super friendly and La Palapa and Leo's provided good food at reasonable prices. It was great having Akumal just a very quick drive away, where we enjoyed snorkeling at Yal-Kul lagoon and beaching on Akumal Beach. For food and other shopping items, Tulum was just 20 minutes away, and the new supermarket had just about everything we went for. Finally, I'll just mention that the many people we met who live in Chan Chemuyil all were as friendly and helpful as can be. We recommend Casa Maare heartily. Bottom line: we'll be back!Recommended for: Age 55+, families with teenagers, adventure seekers, romantic getaway, families with young children, sightseeing.

We had the pleasure of staying at Casa Maare during our February break. The house is exactly as advertised. The community is very safe and the nearby town of Chemuyil is charming. When we arrived we were met by Kevin S, who is the house manager. He gave us a quick tour of the area, which was great! The beach across the street is beautiful, with few people on it. We have already started our plans to return. Great place and great owner! JimDid you find this review helpful? Owner info
Year Purchased: 2009
About the owner: I'm a designer living on the Central Coast of California specializing in the use of sustainable materials for home interiors. I have been traveling all over Mexico for years and recently had the opportunity to purchase a little house in an amazing part of the Yucatan. It's my dream to share this wonderful part of the world with other travelers. I named the place Casa Maare because in the Yucatec language, 'maare' is slang for 'wow!' I mean, wow, I never thought I'd have a house in Mexico.
Why the Owner Chose Tulum:
The Tulum area of Quintana Roo is unique in all the world with an astonishing number of cultural, ecological, oceanographic and archeological wonders to explore and enjoy. The Yucatan peninsula offers something for all kinds of travelers---warm, sunny weather, calm, beach time relaxing, adventurous diving and birding, family-friendly ecological parks, historical tours of the ruins, festive dining and shopping, and more. It's an amazing place with a vibrant history and culture and I am happy to be able to share it with other travelers.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
Casa Maare and its neighborhood of Chan Chemuyil are unique in that they are modest, Mexican-style homes originally built as staff housing for a resort that was never built on the nearby Xcacel beach. The beach was declared a sea turtle sanctuary and the homes languished until a trio of enterprising investors re-packaged and marketed these little gems to locals and vacationers. Built to last, these casitas have weathered 2 hurricanes since 2001. Most owners purchased since 2007 and the tract has evolved into the techni-colored rows and various remodeled facades you see today.
When you vacation at Casa Maare, you'll enjoy many of the amenities of a resort---a/c, comfortable furnishings, lively Mexican decor---but also have the flexibility to prepare your own meals in a simple kitchen, entertain in your own living quarters and private patio, sleep to the sound of ocean breezes and wake to the sounds of tropical birds in the jungle across the street.
Our property management team keeps an office in the neighborhood and are on call to assist you in any way. For additional fees, you can have groceries delivered, extra maid service, or massage.
