San Felipe is a suburb of Oaxaca just 10 min. from the centre of town. It is a small Zapotec village situated in the beautiful foothills of Oaxaca. Many say it is rapidly becoming the Beverley Hills of Oaxaca as much of the land has been bought by wealthy locals and foreigners alike. This mixture of wealthy landowners and the local farming community is exactly what gives the town its unique flavour and the two live together in relative harmony. It is not unusual to see a BMW passing some donkeys carrying wood to be used for cooking and the herder just a couple of steps behind.

This luxury 3 bedroom colonial home offers peace, security and serenity with private gardens, cobble-stoned street, community park and babbling brook within a private gated community with the convenience of a short bus ride to the famous ‘zocalo’ (central park and shopping district) of Oaxaca.

Why the Owner Chose Oaxaca

Oaxaca has a dry season that runs from November thru April during which there is little or no rainfall at all. Although that is precisely what makes living here so attractive, it also raises some serious issues that the buyer or renter needs to consider before making a decision. Reliable water supply. This is probably the most important of all because the supply of water during this season is sporadic at best. All homes in the city area that depend on the municipal water supply have problems on an on-going basis. Make sure the house you are looking at can ensure that you won't be stuck during your stay here. La Encantadora has a separate deep well that has prevented us from ever coming even close to dry! Security. There is no doubt that break-ins and theft are common irrespective of the location. This is not restricted to Oaxaca but many places in Mexico as well. We have never felt in any danger when wandering the streets at night but in order to sleep soundly and with peace of mind, there are three things that you should look for: 1) In general it is preferable that one live outside the core of the city where access to and from an area is easy from a number of routes. Suburbs like San Felipe have only one access road which makes the area less attractive to would-be thieves. 2) Living in a gated community adds even more of a deterrent because if a thief breaks into the compound, it is highly unlikely they will be able to carry anything out. 3) Last but not least, most houses have sophisticated real-time alarm systems to further discourage the intruder. Pressurized water system. Most houses in the area rely on gravity to receive water from their "tinaco" to their faucets and showers. This means that many have to shower longer because there is little real pressure to get to you - the guest! La Encantadora has all of these important features!

The Unique Benefits at this House

All the rooms on the main floor (except the Kitchen) have wood-framed floor-to-ceiling windows. The large living room has sliding glass doors on both sides which can be opened to give you the open-air look. That and the adobe construction, ensures that the place remains comfortable and breezy, even on the hottest days. Likewise, the adobe walls generate heat when the weather is cool so we have the best of both worlds both summer and winter. La Encantadora is not only beautiful during the day, but is almost magical and romantic at dusk. Both interior and exterior lighting have been installed to enhance the beauty of the house and property and create a warm friendly setting for chatting. The house also boasts a kitchen patio, a huge rear terrace with a dining area with 3 dining tables that can easily accommodate 12 people and a roof-top terrace that gives you a fabulous view of the mountains and the Oaxacan valley. The villa is in the middle of hiking country so you can just step out the front door to start your trek! We have a special deal with a 5-star hotel Las Laureles located within 2 minutes from the house. There you can have a great lunch or dinner with an incredible view of their garden and pool. If you eat there, the owner is happy to have you use their pool for the afternoon. I have travelled around the world and seen some exotic places but this is one of the best!

Owner's Map of Oaxaca

We are a couple of retired snowbirds that moved to Oaxaca 3 years ago to take advantage of Oaxaca's perfect climate, eternal sunshine and friendly colorful people. It also lets us live near our daughter and son-in-law who live here permanently. Because we just moved here and have this year decided to rent the house, we do not have any references from other renters to vouch for us. However, back in Canada we had a Bed & Breakfast for years and loved having people from around the world visit us. This has given us the experience of what it takes to make our house feel welcome and comfortable for our guests. Having said that, we will be selective in confirming reservations from abroad to ensure we feel comfortable that our guests will treat our lovely home as they would their own! We look forward to seeing you... Normally, we will be your hosts when arriving in Oaxaca to welcome and brief you on the features of the villa, introduce you to Juanita and Sylvano, our maid and gardener, and give you information on the best restaurants, art galleries, sight-seeing musts etc. that will help jump-start your visit to Oaxaca. In the event we are travelling when you arrive, our daughter Angela and her husband Eduardo will act as your hosts and property manager to make you feel right at home.
