Montmartre is probably the best part of Paris.

It is chic but easy, beautiful but natural, touristic but "homey". It’s the top of Paris in every way.

With the Sacre Coeur on the top of the “mountain”, artists on the Place du Tertre, the glorious lofts and art galleries, Pigalle and the Moulin Rouge; jazz clubs, theatres; historic homes; bars, cafés, wonderful restaurants of all sorts….. and places….. you’ll find them...here in Paris' village. And that’s just “Level ONE”.

Level TWO is rue Caulaincourt, an incredible crossroads of, where you’ll be staying, just at the bottom of Avenue Junot, home of stars and of some of the best architecture of Paris.

And it’s the road to the top.. Caulaincourt is a few minutes’ walk from the Sacre Coeur and the Butte of Montmartre with the famous Place du Tertre, from Pigalle with its clubs, bars and restaurants (including the Moulin Rouge), from Les Abbesses and the upscale restaurants and meeting places, from Barbes, an area steeped in culture from abroad, the Puces, one of the most famous flea markets in the world, and and, and, and……

Level THREE is the apartment building. Built in 1899 on the Champs de Mars (near the Eiffel tower) for the 1900 World’s Fair in Paris, my apartment was the Bavarian pavilion during the fair.

After the fair, it was sold, “un-built”, and reconstructed on rue Caulaincourt. To the back of the house is a small woods that runs around Montmartre called the Maquis; that is one of the places that resistant's hid during the Second World War.

When built, the house had a large garden in front, but some years later, a larger building (6 floors) was built in front of the pavilion and now the garden between the two is much smaller, though still lovely. The front building gives us another benefit: we have woods behind and garden in front, and practically total silence (except for the birds) in the middle of Paris!! Be in Paris when you cross through the other building, or stay home in the silence of the country and soak up the peace of my home.

Inside the building, interest Level FOUR is the best. Take a look at the photos. Great Bavarian woodwork, stained glass windows (all the windows on upper floor are in my apartment), a loft installation with 2 levels and a mezzanine. The building is divided into 6 lofts, all occupied by painters at one time or another (including Renoir, Alfredo Muller, Théophile Steinlen and many others).

The north side of the building is all glass, for the special light artists demand. In addition, my apartment has 3 large skylights so there is hardly ever a need to use electric lights.

Some of you might have looked at or stayed in my apartment in Antibes. It is wonderful but in a very different way. Nonetheless, nobody was ever disappointed there. For the moment, it is not for rent because I live there while building my dream house in Biot, nearby. Trust me - Montmartre is the same. You can’t do better!

What else should I say about the apartment? It has two bedrooms, one of which was actually my office. There is a very high quality convertible couch in this room.

The large built in desk surface is much better for kids (if you bring them) than the other bedroom. But then, it’s also great as an office. There is a fireplace there too but we never use it as we would roast in the small bedroom.

The other bedroom has everything built in as well. In fact, in “my house”, everything HAS to be specially made and built in because the building tilts 4%! No risk for the dwellers, but it slipped into gypsum mine just a bit like much of Montmartre.

The parents’ bedroom has a small double bed (sorry, the room is small) and the walk-in closet also houses the washer-dryer. The bathroom is accessible from both bedrooms and has both a bathtub and a large shower.

The toilet is separate. All this is on the upper floor with the all new kitchen and the dining area on the mezzanine facing the wall of windows.

The living room is downstairs. There are two entrances, up and down and the way the building is configured, you’ll think it’s all yours. Alas, no. Comforting that feeling is the fact that the other apartments are seldom occupied. In fact, three of the five are “pied à terres” in Paris and only used a few months a year.

Last, for bambino, there is a bed, chair and all that you need.

The apartment is fully wired and has a Bose-Loewe home cinema downstairs, Bose stereo throughout, Wi-Fi and free phone to land lines.

Impossible to Do Better in Paris

Year Purchased: 2005

Why the Owner Chose Paris Arrondissement 18

Easy, I love to LIVE where others vacation!! But I didn't buy this apartment to rent it. I bought it in 2005 as the one place I'll keep all my life and live in as much as possible. Circumstances have made me alter my ambitions alas, and I will spend more time on the Riviera than planned. Not a severe punishment though I guess, especially when I think about my in process home in Biot. Wait till you see it!!

The Unique Benefits at this 2 Level Loft

Sometimes when guests ask me for names of restaurants, I say "find your own"! It's a no brainer to find great places to eat in Paris France. Of course I do help when I can but for most people, it is much more significant to make their own discovery. Same for the rest. Only think I generally do for people is try to help them save time. Some of my friends have wasted several trips here by seeing what the guides say to see or by seeing everything through their Canon! Without going too far, I try to get them to skip a couple of steps and see and do things that THEY want to do. Might be a soccer match more than the Louvre....

Owner's Map of Paris Arrondissement 18

For those of us overseas, this rental stuff is great fun. I've lived in Europe for over 30 years mostly in France but also in Germany and Sweden. And my work has taken me just about everywhere you can go. Too late for me to move back "home" to Chicago, but what a pleasure to meet you people.... that live in my home. I've made some splendid friends who rented my place in Antibes. I've been here long enough to know many of the ropes and i thoroughly enjoy helping you have a great vacation. No place is more beautiful than Paris, and not only in the spring time. You'll see. Then, once you get the hang of us in France, maybe you'll come back and try Antibes!!
