I would recommended a different place

A group of 5 girls went here for our annual get-together. We travel from all over the U.S. to have one weekend together, and we expected to get what we signed up for. Well, that is not the case with this cottage. Upon first arrival, we were greeted by a winter's worth of bugs, spiders, cockroaches, and nests. Although the owner told us that they vacuumed prior to our arrival, the cottage was filled with insects that we knew we're living there all winter. All windows had hornets' nests in them. The hot tub was not clean. After many failed attempts to contact the owner, we cleaned the cottage ourselves - took many hours to vacuum every corner so that we felt comfortable. The owner did come the following day to clean out the hot tub and removed the hornets' and spiders' nests. As for the dock and lake, it is in a cove off a finger of the lake, and is not ideal for swimming. The dock is high above the water and not stable. Although advertised, there was not a finished basement with a mini-kitchenette - it was unfinished and dirty. Once we did get ahold of the owner, he tried to work with us and make us happy. Although we were disappointed, we made the best of our time. Smith Mtn Lake is a beautiful place to go, but I recommend renting a different cabin.

What was supposed to be a great time turned into a nightmare. This place is in bad shape and has serious plumbing problems. You are greeted with a bad smell when you first open the door. There's a bucket under the kitchen sink because the drain leaks, the toilets don't flush well and when the septic system backed up and flooded the basement (laundry room?) we had to leave. Other problems include: high speed internet (Hughes satellite) that is so slow you have to wait several minutes just to check email, small downloads take over half an hour, the deck sways very bad and is ready to fall over, the basement (laundry room) walls are torn up (no sheetrock 18" from the floor) from previous floods, black mold on basement walls and floor, extremely hard and cheap mattresses, etc. etc. The property manager was completely unavailable during our stay. The neighbors are the best part of this place, they are very friendly and helpful and told us that most renters here have very bad experiences. The owner is a advertising salesman in NY, don't let him sell you a bill of goods on this one.

We were looking for a quaint place to stay while attending a wedding on Smith Mtn Lake, not wanting to leave Fido at home, this was the perfect place! We all swam in the lake by day, and then relaxed and watched movies on the High-Def TV at night! Bring your own food and cook in the kitchen, grill some hot dogs and beans. For those coming in from out of town, the best place to stock up beforehand is the giant new Super WalMart about 10 miles away. It's brand-spanking new and fairly convenient.
