My family of 5 was looking to spend a week in New York City during the kids' spring break. Would've needed two hotel rooms in order to be comfortable, and didn't want to spend that much. Went the HomeAway route and found this lovely and roomy place in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn (a few blocks north and east of Prospect Park). Easy subway access to/from JFK airport, and also easy subway access to/from Manhattan. Apartment had plenty of room (teenage son slept on futon - we used the available second futon mattress to make it extra comfy). The parlor area was a great place to chill when we weren't out doing tourist stuff. Wi-fi worked fine when we used it. Krista, the owner, is very accommodating and responsive. She had fresh banana bread and a bag of locally roasted (and really good) "Gorilla" coffee waiting for us. She also provided us with many recommendations on local places to eat, buy groceries, etc. Crown Heights is a vibrant neighborhood. Right in the 'hood, we had excellent (and inexpensive) sushi, Thai food, breakfast pastries, and incredible pancakes (the latter at a place called Tom's - gotta check that place out). Sure, we had a lot of fun on Manhattan, but it was great to come "home" to the nice apartment on the quiet street in Brooklyn.

Owner response: Thank you for your detailed review Robert! Much appreciated, and informative for other guests. I'm so glad you enjoyed exploring some of the neighborhood gems, and it was a pleasure to accommodate you. Hope to see you next time!

Everything is as advertised, including the banana bread! It was so good I asked Krista for the recipe and she happily provided it. We had 2 adults and 2 teenagers and it was wonderful to have so much space. The Franklin Ave subway stop, a short walk away, is on the 2, 3, 4 and 5 lines AND it's an express stop. Our son lives in the area, so we had visited in Dec 2011 and at that time we were thrilled with the restaurant/bar choices and it's only gotten better. I'm a little on the claustrophobic side, so after spending the day in Manhattan it was pure joy to come home to ten foot ceilings. No way I would ever stay in a hotel again. Thanks for sharing your home Krista!!

The brownstone was beautiful.. The owner (host) was so accommodating and helpful. It was so nice to come home to a "home" setting after being a tourist in NY. There were coffee shops, corner stores and restaurants nearby. One subway stop a block away and another about 3 blocks away so were easily able to get to Manhattan for our outings and then come back to a quieter area for downtime. I would recommend this to anybody that didn't want to pay the high price for a hotel and get one little room. I was traveling with my wife and adult daughter and we had so much room. Dining room and a very good kitchen, 2 bedrooms and a living roomi. It was an easy cab ride from JFK. I would stay there again without hesitation.

Owner response: Thanks for your review Tim! I look forward to seeing you next time.

We stayed in the Brownstone Suite in Brooklyn for 12 nights. We had a great time and loved both Brooklyn and New York. We appreciated the banana bread, juice, milk and coffee on arrival, especially after a 19 hour flight!! The little touches made us feel welcomed and helped us settle in. The apartment was spacious, clean and comfortable, and exceeded our expectations. It was a great place to return home to after a day of sightseeing. We loved the location - close to shops, amenities and the subway. It is located in a nice part of Brooklyn which has real character. We thoroughly recommend a visit to Prospect Park, the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens and the Brooklyn Museum. The only concerns we had (which prevent us from rating this property as excellent) were the upstairs neighbours who were often noisy arriving late at night and the squeaky bed which woke me up every time I moved. Nonetheless, we enjoyed our stay and would recommend the apartment to friends and family.

Owner response: Thanks for your comments Vivian & Graham! Just wanted to let you know, the bed has been replaced thanks to your feedback. The upstairs neighbors have been very cooperative and we're installing carpets with padded underlay to help with the sound of footsteps.

We (Two parents and three teenager kids form the Netherlands, stayed one week at Krista's beautifull appartment. This is really an interesting nice house with history as you can see on the website. Krista has given much attention to make it a beautifull place to live. On arrival we were surprised by the home made bananacake, the fresh coffeebeans. A lot of usefull information like a map of the underground and a list of nice localities in the neighbourhood of shops restaurants etc. During the preparation of our journey it was pleasant that all our questions were answered so quickly that the answer was almost before the question :) What's maybe even more important is that this part of Brooklyn is a save neighbourhood. No problems when returning late at night, friendly people everywhere. A nice neighbourhood to relax from the stunning views of Manhatten that is only half an hour away with the underground. Kind regards, Nanco Nanninga and family.

We brought our boys to NYC for the first time but wanted to experience living there as opposed to going the hotel route. Staying in Brooklyn in Krista's brownstone really expanded the entire experience for us. The apartment is situated in a very quiet, but diverse community that offers a great respite from a long day in Manhattan. Subway is very convenient to get to the city, but also to explore many sites in Brooklyn including Coney Island, which we loved. I was very impressed with how accommodating and accessible Krista was in helping us get the best out of our visit. Paul

My wife and I stayed in the Parlour Suite (main floor) of this beautiful brownstone July 21-29, 2012. As others have said, it's a lovely, historic apartment with rich decor and a terrific ambiance. Its best feature is its location just minutes from the entire NYC subway system, which makes it a fabulous base from which to do day trips to see the sights of all of the boroughs including, of course, Manhattan. Grab a free subway map from any station booth and you're all set! Krista, the owner, is very gracious and welcomes her guests with amenities such as milk, orange juice and her own home-baked banana break, which is outstanding. Thanks, Krista! As well, the young couple who live upstairs, Jon and Sarah, are extremely helpful and happy to provide suggestions on things to see and do. Thanks, guys! One very minor point regarding the layout of the apartment is probably worth mentioning to anyone who is planning to entertain friends or relatives for a night or two. It's NOT a negative; it's simply something to be aware of. The second bedroom is located in what was probably once a dining room in the middle of the suite. It is partially private, with sliding doors on one side and a curtain on the other. However, you still have to walk through it to get from the living room to the kitchen and primary bedroom. If that's where you put your kids, no problem. If that's where another couple or anyone who wants privacy or goes to bed at a different time than the rest of the guests is staying, it's simply something to be aware of. No big deal -- just a heads up. We highly recommend this beautiful apartment and know you will love it as much as we did. Thanks again, Krista, for a wonderful week.

The Parlor Suite was the perfect place for our family to stay during our one week New York City vacation. We have stayed in many private rentals over the years and this one stood out on many levels. The traditional brownstone building was beautiful and well taken care of. The apartment was Spacious, clean and very comfortable. Personal touches like home made banana bread, coffee, milk and juice made us feel very welcome and 'at home'. The linens and bath towels were luxurious, kitchen and bathroom well supplied. My 12 year old was tickled pink to discover the NHL Chanel and enjoyed watching a 1988 Stanley cup playoff game ...'I never thought I would get to see Wayne Gretzski play hockey!' The location was great as well. Close enough to the subway system and shops and many great restaurants. I highly recommend Cataldo's @ 554 Vanderbilt for wonderful Italian food served by very personable owners. I look forward to staying here again sometime!

We enjoyed our experience very much and found the property to live up to its billing. The owner was very gracious and attentive in her follow ups, and the amenities provided on site were above expectations. The quality of the property for the price was exceptional, especially compared to Manhattan. Even though the subway train to the City was several blocks away, it was an easy walk. Only issue worth mentioning was the car service which was one of two mentioned in the owner's notes. I had called the night before and asked for a large car or a mini van, since there were four people with five bags. The car arrived promptly but was too small, and it took 15 minutes plus to get a larger car. We still made it to Penn Station with time to spare. Altogether, it was an excellent experience, and Brooklyn has great restaurants and venues to explore. The Brooklyn Museum is a nice walk from the apartment, and a refreshing change from the mobs at Manhattan museums.

Myself and my two brothers had a great weeklong stay in Krista's apartment when we travelled over from Scotland. We used the apartment mostly as a base for commuting to and from Manhattan and for this purpose it was pretty much ideal with the Franklin Avenue Metro only five minutes walk and then twenty-five minutes metro to get to Grand Central. When I arrived the housekeeper was there to meet me in the evening as was some freshly baked goods and essential supplies, which was very much appreciated. Basically, if I am ever returning to NYC, this will be the first place I will look to. Thanks Krista!

Owner response: Thank you for your comments Mark! I'm happy to hear you enjoyed your stay and the direct commut into Manhattan. I hope to see you next time! Best wishes, Krista
