S.E. Duplex- Garden Retreat Near Mt Tabor Montavilla Hawthorne
Year Purchased: 2005
Why the Owner Chose Hawthorne
We chose to buy our duplex because it's location is central to everything. The Montavilla neighborhood is very welcoming and the SE Stark Street Business district has developed into one of Portland's newest hot spots. In the past few years we have witnessed and been part of the revival of this wonderful "family-friendly" neighborhood.
The Unique Benefits at this Apartment
Discover the charm of the Montavilla neighborhood and it's newly rejuvenated SE Stark Street Business District all within a few blocks of our rental.
You can feast at old favorites like “Flying Pie Pizza” or “Ya Hala Lebanese Cuisine”. Start your day at the “Bipartisan Café” and take in a movie at the “Academy Theater”. On Sunday treat yourself to fresh produce and local cuisine at the “Montavilla Farmer’s Market”(June – November) or brunch at the “Country Cat”. Join the locals for a beer and burgers at “Thatchers” or Cajun food and a game of pool at “Roscoes”. “The Observatory” features monthly art exhibits and offers a delightful dining experience... we call it upscale comfort food. And don’t miss out on “Miyamoto Sushi Bar” and the “Vintage Cocktail Lounge” or the newest addition, "Bangkok Bites Thai Cusine".
If you want a tasty treat, try the ”Pastry Girl”, “Immortal Pie and Larder” or the “International Market”. And you can shop for fashion from local designers at “Union Rose” and "Branch Birdie" or if retro is your thing try "Duds Resale Shop" and "Shag Mid-Century Modern". Relax at the “Portland Yoga Studio” and enjoy a soothing soak at “Portland Tub and Tan”. Or if you’re feeling adventurous you can get a permanent memento at “Raw Ink Tattoo”.
Venture a little further and you can experience the beauty and summer concerts at Mt. Tabor Park, shop for antiques “Monticello Antique Marketplace” and sample the local art scene and theater at "Mile Post 5"
At the end of the day relax in the private gardens of our vacation rental.

We had a GREAT stay! Very comfortable, attractive, and organized (even the movies are alphabetized). We felt VERY taken care of by the owners. A great place to stay especially if visiting S.E. The house was very spacious for the four of us, including two teenagers. A lovely back patio with plants, a bird bath and seating. An easy drive to the best places Portland has to offer. A very good choice!!!!

We've stayed in many VRBO's over the years and this one stands out. Great location, spacious, spotless, has everything you could ever need and even extra touches like fresh flowers! Owners Dan and Ryan went above and beyond with their excellent communication and clearly written contract. The duplex looks even better than the pictures, and I look forward to returning when the beautifully-landscaped yard is in bloom. Shops and restaurants on Stark were great, we walked two blocks to the bipartisan cafe every morning for coffee and enjoyed the Lebanese restaurant. Mt. Tabor park was fun for walks in the drizzling rain. Thanks for a great stay, we'll be back!

This was a lovely spot in the Montavilla part of Portland. It's is quite comfortable, a lovely garden & the back garden with the water feature was very relaxing. It was nice to eat in or dine out & we loved "The Observatory" just a couple of blocks away, very easy to walk to, great reasonable priced food & drink. Dan & Ryan very lovely & easy to reach. Our family spent loads of time with us there & we all enjoyed this nice apartment. We will be back!

This is a spotlessly clean and beautifully equipped vacation rental. The kitchen has everything you would need. The owners supply information about everything you could possibly think of! The owners are former landscape designers and brought their skills to the private garden area reached by French doors from the dining room. there was a fountain and lovely seating area (and B-que grill with all necessary tools!). We loved sitting out in th garden every morning and evening. this is sa great place!

Our family rented both sides of the duplex, some of us for two weeks and the rest of us for one week. We totaled four adults and three kids ranging in age from one year to five years old. This side of the duplex was inhabited by my husband, our three year old son, and myself. The duplex was just right for us, and it was a delight to be surrounded by such a beautiful garden. Parents: the water feature does pose a potential hazard, so we were extra cautious with our three year old, but it was manageable. I probably wouldn't have risked it with a younger child. The other half of the duplex is a little more relaxed for children, but that is not to say it was a problem for us. In fact, our son enjoyed looking at the pond and was happy to discover the resident fish. We had a wonderful time walking around the neighborhood. There are a number of fun places to check out just a few blocks away, and some were interesting for the children. One shop, Bird on a Branch, even has a little playroom for the kids. Also, the farmer's market on the weekend was great. We did drive around Portland a lot during our stay, but found that the duplex was not far from most of the destinations we were interested in. The property was extremely clean and quiet. We had everything we needed right at hand, and the onsite laundry was great. The owners were informative and easy to work with. When it came time to pack up and go, we appreciated the short, easy drive to the airport. We would definitely recommend this rental and stay there again.

We had a great time. We were in town for a wedding and found this place on VRBO. The owners met us personally, showed us around, and gave us great info on places to visit while in the area. The garden is beautiful and I would recommend this place to anyone staying in the area.
