Our self-catering fully equipped 3 bedroom, 2 full bathroom house is located directly on the Cabot Trail in friendly Middle River. It is a pretty and charming house which was built as the manse for the nearby Presbyterian church in 1911, then completely renovated in 2007 and is well known throughout the area. We are only 15 minutes from Baddeck and located only 11 km (6 miles) north of the Trans-Canada Highway. In Baddeck you will find a good range of services, businesses, and restaurants. We are an easy 3 hours drive from Halifax and 1 hour from Sydney. The area abounds in natural beauty and being located on "the Trail" puts you in a good position to enjoy the area.
The world famous salmon-rich Margaree River is only 20 minutes away and even closer is the Middle River which runs only a few hundred feet west of the house. World-class links golfing can be found in Ingonish (75 minutes) or at the Bell Bay course in nearby Baddeck. The Normaway Inn, which is noted for its concerts and dances, is only 20 minutes away. The largest and most famous Celtic music festival in North America, Celtic Colours, is at various locations around the island (including the Normaway) and attracts major crowds each year. This year the festival is from October 9-17, 2009.
One bedroom has a queen bed, another has a double, and the third has 2 single beds. One bathroom has a whirlpool tub with shower above and the other has a tub with shower above. There is a full kitchen with fridge, electric oven, microwave, dishwasher, s/s sink, range hood, breakfast bar. The washing machine and dryer are in the utility room off kitchen. All the bedrooms and bathrooms are upstairs accessible by 2 staircases. The living room has a sofa and loveseat, built in cabinets containing satellite TV, and stereo CD/cassette player with radio. The dining room has an antique set. There is a game/reading room off of the living room with a card table and 4 chairs. Much of the original woodwork has been retained such as the main staircase.
There are two separate covered decks in the front of the house accessible from the vestibule. We are located on 2 acre lot with lots of parking. Heating is by oil furnace and radiators throughout house.
Other nearby day trips include Fortress Louisbourg, the Glenora Distillery, the railway museum in Orangedale, whale watching tours from the west and north coasts, and Cape Breton Highlands National Park which you will pass through if you do a circuit of "the Trail" (allow at least 4 hours). Save this drive for a blue-sky day and you will see why people return to Cape Breton year after year to enjoy its natural beauty.
