Located in the heart of the Midwest in Denison, Iowa, the Carey House, a Queen Anne cottage design of the architectural firm of George F. Barber, is officially listed on The National Register of Historic Places. The house was built for John Carey, a mayor responsible for exceptional development of the city of Denison in the early 1900’s and Marietta Greek Carey, born in 1856 in Crawford County, Iowa to a pioneer family. This graciously restored home, built circa 1893, has original southern pine and oak floors, original woodwork, a beautiful staircase, and pocket doors.
The Carey House presents an opportunity to escape the modern lifestyle as you relax in a home a world apart without TV, telephone, and internet. Forget your cares, as you relax to music from yesteryear, read a book, play a game of cards or watch an old time movie on our DVD player as you sip hot chocolate or tea.
The Cheryl Lee bedroom features a double brass bed, antique writing desk and lace curtains.
Marietta's bedroom features antique furniture, Bradbury & Bradbury wallpaper and an adjacent sitting room with skylight. A smaller bedroom with a twin bed is across the hall from Marietta's room. There are bathrooms on both the first and second floors of the house.

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2000
I grew up on a farm near Denison and have always had a love for old historic homes and rural life. My sister and her family have a home near the Carey House, and we were happy to be able to purchase and restore this home in the community with which we have so many connections. It is a delight to return to Denison often and spend time at the Carey House which has so many lovely aspects to recommend it.
The Unique Benefits of this House
Visitors can enjoy sitting on the upper balcony and reading or just relishing the view of the green hills and farmland to the south of Denison. When sitting out on the front porch neighbors and passers-by often take time to share an anecdote or comment on the pretty flowers.
