BESIDE THE CREEK is a beautiful, substantial family lodge built on its own small piece of Wyoming paradise — four private acres of dappled aspen woods and rolling grassland tucked at the far end of a dirt road, with a year-round stream rippling by the back door. Across the valley, the Grand Tetons hold up the big blue sky like a tent. Beside the Creek is big and spacious, with thick log walls and soaring windows.
Low stone steps lead to the front door, and there is a sense of architectural anticipation as the entry foyer opens dramatically into the two story great room with its grand wall of glass. A huge river rock, wood-burning fireplace and a triad of soft leather couches anchor the great room and form the heart of the house. Doors open to a wide stone terrace facing Lake Creek and the mountains.
A powder room is set off to the side, and under the open log staircase is a delightful upright player piano, which can also be played by hand. The cathedral ceiling of the great room — high enough to hold the tremendous panorama of mountains outside — drops to a beamed wood ceiling as the space transitions to dining room, sitting area and kitchen; each one open to the others, yet distinct.
The dining area is separated from the kitchen by a sitting area with a built-in bar; here two cushioned wicker armchairs and a sofa are grouped around a low table with an inlaid chess board. A granite-topped breakfast bar and three river willow stools border the kitchen.
The kitchen is both well-stocked and wonderful to work in. Above the Viking gas range, SubZero refrigerator and double dishwashers, dark cherry cabinets are filled with silver, glassware, and small appliances like mixers and espresso machines. A roomy pantry keeps groceries out of sight. Over the corner sink, a double window looks out to the woods and the willows, a fine spot for watching the moose, deer, bears, eagles, foxes and elk that wander by.
Off of the kitchen is a big screened porch with its own wood-burning fireplace and outdoor dining area, where willow armchairs surround a long table. Out here, in summer, the splashing creek, the singing crickets and the rustling of aspen leaves play a perpetual symphony of natural sound.
Beside the Creek was created for the great and simple joys of family get-togethers. It has three bedrooms and a bunk room; ten or more people can sleep here happily and comfortably. The master suite — at the quiet end of a hallway off the great room — has a tall gas fireplace of smooth, rounded river stones, a cathedral wood ceiling arching over the king bed, and an oriental carpet that lies upon the glowing wood floor.
The suite stretches from the front to the back of the house, and, from the bedroom to the bathroom, there is a 180-degree view of the great naturescape outside. Doors open to Beside the Creek’s wrap-around terrace and a hot tub, and drapes can be pulled across the entire windowed wall for privacy and shade.
Just past the walk-in closet is a rustic, luxurious bathroom with double sinks, private toilet room, a deep, jetted tub and separate shower of Colorado stone. Closer to the great room, at the hallway’s midpoint, is a study with a wide, flat-screen TV set into built-in cabinets. A sleeper sofa accommodates extra overnight guests and the late night movie in bed.
The two guest bedrooms are both roomy and comfortable. The elegant guest suite on the ground floor is filled with light and has a queen bed facing a gas fireplace. French doors open to the creek and the hot tub. There is a private bath with a marble-topped sink, a separate shower and a deep soaking tub. The second guest room is upstairs, a snug, camp-like retreat with a rustic queen bed made of logs.
The rush of the creek below provides a nightly serenade. The forest outside comes right up to the windows and seems to continue on into the guest room’s wonderful woodland bathroom, where the aspen tree wallpaper, twig-framed mirror, and glass bowl sink balanced on a wood slab vanity make the space seem an enchanted forest.
One of the house’s most wonderful features is a fabulous, fanciful play loft right at the top of the stairs, overlooking the great room. Light floods in through windows on three sides, creating a luminous and cheerful haven within earshot of the living room below. There is a great, open carpeted space to spread out and play, and a supply of toys and games for all ages.
As if in a fairy tale, a tidy little bed is tucked into a corner; a painted wood dresser and child-size armchair and armoire wait for like-sized playmates. Off of the playroom is the four-berth bunk room — two built-in niche beds with curtains to pull closed and shelves for storing books and treasures; two free-standing log twins by the windows, with views of the magical wilderness and high mountains outside. The bunk room has its own bathroom, with one sink and a shower.
Beside the Creek has a three car garage, and a big laundry/mud room just off the pantry — perfect for depositing gear and outerwear on your way back in after a day of adventuring. As its name suggests, Beside the Creek is set right along the edge of a wide, pebble-bottomed, spring-fed brook, edged with willows.
The property feels wild and secluded, though a mere five minute drive will bring you into lively, chic Teton Village. Beside the Creek is the perfect home base for everything Jackson Hole has to offer in every season –Grand Teton National Park, spas, restaurants, ski slopes, boundless hiking trails that start at the door, and — perhaps best of all — some of the West’s best fishing, right in the back yard.
