Chimney Corner is located in the beautiful Margaree River region of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Our site is situated on the Gulf of St.Lawrence and provides twenty-five acres of woodland and private beach for those who wish to escape the world of commercialism and enjoy a quiet, secluded, ocean setting. The property lends itself to reflection and getting in touch with yourself: walking down the birch lined driveway, sitting on a cliff deck overlooking the Gulf, or going to the beach and counting that seventh wave. Enjoy the fresh air, the birds calling, a clear night sky, a stroll to the beach to collect driftwood and search for fossils, along with an early morning coffee or late evening wine on the decks.
Your hosts are retired educators who are actively involved in local, regional and provincial tourism organizations. Our seventeen years of superb hospitality and service guarantee an enjoyable experience. The property is licensed and inspected by the Nova Scotia Department of Tourism. We comply with all provincial regulations regarding water testing, fire alarms, fire extinguishers, and health and safety. We are also inspected by Canada Select and have a four-star rating.
The goal of the cottage experience is good, old-fashioned Cape Breton hospitality where we welcome you to our property. We are traditional, not commercial. Our guests are family, not clients.
The goal of the cottages is privacy and tranquility while perched at the edge of fifty foot cliffs. The stressed-out and burnt-out can recharge, and the vacationer can just vegetate. Three-days in a cottage will give you a "taste," but it takes a minimum of a week to "savour" Cape Breton.
Relaxing day trips from Chimney Corner could take you to the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, Alexander Graham Bell Museum, Fortress Louisbourg, Miners Museum, Highland Village, Gaelic College and home in time for evening tea. Boat tours, sand beaches, whale watching, canoeing, golfing, fishing (trout, salmon, deep sea), all are within a short drive.

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
We emigrated from upstate New York in 1964, the year we bought the "wilderness" in Chimney Corner. The first five years were spent in Halifax where Jan taught high school English and Bob completed his university education at Dalhousie. Weekends and summer vacations were spent at Chimney Corner, clearing land and pounding nails, and finally, after a period of twenty years, in 1989, the house was finished and we became permanent residents at our little cove. The B&B and cottages commenced in 1992 and we have not looked back. The B&B portion of the business was scaled back in 2008 and our efforts are primarily devoted to the cottages. The off-season is as busy as the summer, with choirs, quilting, knitting, construction, coaching, genealogy, local and provincial tourism committees, and winter catch-up reading. (VE1CYH)
Why the Owner Chose Chimney Corner
We wanted a private place on the water with a beach, woods, brook, and seclusion. We both have Nova Scotia roots. Jan is descended from the first settlers of Pictou County, NS in the 1800s and Bob has "Planter" ancestors who settled in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia in 1760 from Massachusetts.
We haven't seen any ghosts or schooners passing by our little cove, but we remain vigilant.
The Cape Breton lifestyle is very laid back. We know of no one on the shore who suffers from ulcers. The people are very community minded and friendly and contrary to what one might think, the winters here are not isolated and boring. Saying, "No," to offers to participate in organizations and activities is a most difficult chore - not for lack of interest, but for lack of time.
The Unique Benefits of this Cottage
The most unique benefit in staying at our property is the seclusion and privacy. The guests say it best, "You can take out the TV, telephone, and wireless. We have a stack of books and we just want to vegetate for a week." Tourists and vacationers are part of our clientele, but the majority of our guests are folks who need to unwind and escape their daily routines. They want to get in touch with themselves and with nature.
