Historic 2BR Captain’s Cottage in the heart of Old Town.
(8 Howard Court, Nantucket, MA 02554)
Nestled among the gardens on a quaint, shell lane, this circa 1827/1850 property was recently fully renovated for sophisticated living. It maintains its historic charm while providing comforts and modern amenities for gracious living.
It’s a real life fairy tale cottage - some have called it magical!
A privet surround and the garden’s southerly orientation define the outdoor living space, offering both warm sunshine and dappled shade. Enjoy morning coffee on the stone terrace, take time out for sunbathing or spend a shady afternoon with a great book. Evenings, the sheltered grounds offer star gazers clarity unique to Nantucket, and offer couples a perfect spot for romantic alfresco dining. Completely private. Birds abound.
A small cottage with a big house feel, this property was on the Garden Club Tour in 2006, and on the Nantucket Preservation Trust’s House Tour the following year. The floor plan is open, the furnishings and art collection selected by and for cognoscenti, and the kitchen designed by a serious cook. When day is done, there’s a cozy, tucked away, sky-lighted, first floor bedroom & adjacent bath offering privacy to a second couple or to the occupants’ invited guests.
The second floor master bedroom suite includes an office, foyer, and bath. Don’t even lift your head from your pillow to watch the sunrise to the east, or the birds staging themselves for breakfast amid the canopy of branches to the west. The office too, enjoys a westerly view of the meadow behind the property. In winter, as many as 11 deer have called the meadow home. The sunsets are spectacular!
Just steps away from the historic “Three Bricks” on magnificent, elm shaded, upper Main Street; quiet, private Howard Court is a short five minute walk to Old Town center. Designed for a totally self-indulgent summer idyll, the property is perfectly located, allowing plenty of flexibility for both at-home or walking distance activities, without the need for a car; though off-street parking is provided for one vehicle.
Nantucket, “One of the most perfectly preserved examples of 19th century architecture in America.” and the once "Whaling Capitol of the World" pairs its unique history with pristine beaches, fishing & sailing, miles of bicycle & nature trails, absolutely world class restaurants, galleries and distinctive shopping. It’s no wonder so many people return year after year to savor Nantucket cottaged summers.

Why the Owner Chose Nantucket Town
We decided to buy this property within minutes of seeing it! Sweet little cottages like this one we knew were becoming a rarity. Preservationists at heart, we saw a perfect Nantucket "salt box", with much of its historical fabric in tact. And we imagined the potential! Our family's 29 years of Nantucket living and my own summers here as a teenager had taught us exactly how special Nantucket summers can be. It's been a family project: our son's construction company restored & renovated. My gallery installed the art and furnishings. The cottage offers off street parking, a 10 minute traffic-free drive to most beaches, a 5 or 10 minute walk to dozens of world class restaurants; lots of quiet residential lanes waiting to be discovered in a tucked-away, historic part of town cherished by the locals.
The Unique Benefits at this House
On first sight, most who have stayed here respond exactly the same way we did, by saying, "It looks like a Fairy Tale Cottage!" When vacation has ended and it's time for goodbyes, there's a general consensus: "It's magical!" It absolutely is. It's a cozy little cottage for a perfect summer idyll; thoughtfully designed for gracious living and entertaining. We are happy to share our restaurant favorites and suggest Nantucket's "insider" places not to be missed.
Historic brick sea captain/ship builder's mansions, built identically for his three sons. His most famous whaling ship was "Three Brothers"
Owner's Map of Nantucket Town
We are a Fine Art & Antiques gallery owner of 25+ years, extreme cook and wine professional; an airline pilot/owner of an aircraft charter company; a finish carpenter, 2009 Appalachian Trail thru-hiker and co-founder of Grassroots United, a disaster response org in Haiti; and a M.S. nutritionist / fitness instructor / private chef / tri-athlete / snowboarder. My husband & I moved to Nantucket from Boston in 1981 to raise our family. This island has it all! Clean air, gorgeous beaches and boating, miles and miles of bike paths and nature trails, and historic villages where folks are invested - in their community, in the arts, in nature and, especially, in each other.

Our thanks for the pleasure of staying in your home. Your listing perfectly describes its charm...except we found 8 Howard Court to be MORE than magical! It was a wonderful place to retreat to after a hard day of biking and the coziest place to curl up with a book when the rains came. Thanks also for being so helpful with your outstanding restaurant recommendations and for giving us the website links for various activities. We didn't stay long enough to get to experience them all...which just means we have those to enjoy when we return!
Recommended for:Age 55+, sightseeing, tourists without a car, romantic getaway.

I just want to ..."let you know how appreciative we were in getting to stay in your beautiful place. It was also a great pleasure to meet you, we only wish we could have taken you dining, but that gives us an additional activity for next year. I would like to schedule your place for next year. We had a wonderful time primarily due to your excellent suggestions in things to do while visiting! If you are ever in our part of the woods please let us know so you can stay with us if it is convenient or we can take you out to dinner. Thanks again for a wonderful place to stay and being so kind to us, Fred

My thanks for a really wonderful week in Nantucket. The house is beautiful and comfortable in all respects, and it was a pleasure to live among your art collection (and to cook in your wonderful kitchen). We'd very much like to return sometime--certainly next year if not before.
