A rushing stream wraps around the back of our mountain cabin in the woods. Located on five acres, the cabin features a cozy dining/living area where you can dine to the sound of the creek or relax in front of the wood stove with a picture perfect view of the stream. The recently renovated cabin features Corian kitchen counters, beautiful wood floors throughout and lofted ceilings for a spacious feel. We purchased top of the line mattresses for the two bedrooms and for the futons in the living room and in the den. Walk into any room in the cabin and you can hear the soothing sound of the creek. Plan a picnic in our outdoor area with its vintage wood stove and grill or relax on the deck--we have two--one in front of the cabin and one behind it right over the creek. Excellent hiking is available right outside our door.
Highlands with its gourmet restaurants and inviting shops is a 40 minute drive from our door. Franklin is a twenty minute drive and it has museums, gem mines, restaurants and shops. If you're looking for peace and quiet and the refreshing solace of nature, this is the cabin for you. Lots of room for the kids to run around and they will love playing in the creek. Teenagers will love hiking up the stream and sliding down the rock into the refreshing stream. This is also the perfect romantic getaway for the two of you. It's nice and cool up here--we have often made fires in the wood stove in the middle of the summer.

Went to the cabin over the Thanksgiving holiday and had a wonderful time. Love the flowing stream even though it rained very hard and we had to leave a little early, this was one of the best places we have ever rented in the NC mountains. One of the cleanest places we have stayed. Thanks for everything.

This house was wonderful! Dogs, daughter & parents (us) loved it! Beds were unbelievably comfortable. The waterfall could have run right into the den. Very cool! Highly recommend. Had everything we needed right there. The short drive to Highlands was beautiful! And Kathryn was great to work with. Will come again!

The cabin is exactly as represented in the photos--except more spacious and super-clean. The setting is glorious. The beauty of the area, the sounds of the water, the privacy---all exceeded our expectations and put us at ease immediately. It's been our experience that the other thing you want from a VRBO property is a responsible and responsive owner: and this one is ideal. Business-like and on top of it! We LOVE this place and plan to return often!

As soon as we walked up to the property we felt a sense of relaxation come over us. Absolutely beautiful setting! Our kids, who admittedly are quite plugged in teens during "regular" life, were completely entertained with all the property offers. Exploring the creek, enjoying the hammock, building mini boats and racing them, etc. We enjoyed the windows allowing views all around the house of the running creek and sunlight on our special reading spots. The kitchen is nicely modern with corian and appliances and has all the supplies you need, just bring your food. Large bedrooms and living areas. We enjoyed the quaint town of Sylva, as well as hikes to Whitewater Falls (must do) visiting Highlands and Cashiers but mostly, just hanging out together! We will be back, thanks for this awesome getaway!

WOW! This place is a one of a kind experience. Pictures cannot capture how unique it is. We walked in and just stood there, seemingly in the midst of a tumbling cascade. I couldn't believe Kathryn shares this. She kindly let our schnauzer-yorkie, Rosco, enjoy this with us. He's never been in leaves before, nor had the extreme pleasure of running wild throughout 5 acres. He was so tired the first night that I could have picked him up by his feet while he was sleeping and he never would have known it. The one tip not mentioned would be not to miss trying the gourmet but reasonably priced Cafe Rel in Franklin. It's in with a gas station, not kidding, and it is totally yummy. A bowl of crab bisque was around $6.00 and the inventive sandwiches were huge. The Chamber of Commerce, as well as everyone we ran into recommended it. We had a fabulous time at this property and as rock hounds, we felt like we struck gold with this gem. Thank you, Kathryn!

The above is the title of a well know movie and originally a book. How appropriate that the owner of this wonderful place is an author herself. I can imagine her getting inspiration for her writing while staying in this cabin. This was by far our best cabin experience in the 4 years coming to this area. The calming and unique experience of having the sound of a mountain stream all around you cant be put into words.(at least I cant). We loved the whole time we spend in and around the house. Sitting in that recliner pictured, can best be described as true sensory experience. You can see, hear, smell and even feel the flow of the river as you relax.( You may need to come up with a plan to allow equal access THE chair. We did!) The cabin was very clean and the kitchen and all appliances were brand new. The beds were very comfortable and the sound of the stream will lull you to sleep if you open the doors or windows from either bedroom. There is no central heat but if you need to use the stove it get very warm. There are baseboard and space heaters as well. The location is also ideal for getting to either Franklin or Highlands. We will definitely be back if we come to the area again. We would like to try later in the summer next time so we could actually sit in the stream. Keith and Kathy
Owner response:Thank you for your wonderful review. We just installed two powerful, built-in forced-air heat units so keeping warm is now easier.

My hubby and I spent a glorious week at the cabin in August 2010. The stream was incredible and is literally right outside the windows and next to the deck. The sound was so relaxing. The cabin was spotless, well maintained and far exceeded our expectations. The privacy and serenity was incredible and only a short drive from Franklin, where we were able to get food and supplies. The cabin is not too far from the gem mines and rock related businesses. We visited the Cherokee mine, which is one of the few mines that does not salt their dirt. Both the dirt and stones are local. Some other mines may put foreign stones in the dirt and just say local dirt. Be sure to ask the questions. The folks at the Ruby City Gems know all about the mines and are happy to answer your questions. They have some nice rock specimens too. The cabin owner is very friendly and answers questions very promptly. I woulld recommend this cabin to anyone wanting some rest and relaxation. We will rent this cabin again. It must be incredible in the fall when the leaves change color.

Our family (2+2) stayed at the rental the week before school started. It was one of the best vacations we’ve had in a while. The cabin was so pleasing, you couldn’t have asked for a better setting. The drive up the mountain was so enjoyable, as farms and steams dot the landscape. No noise with the exception of the babbling creek and birds chirping. The inside of the cabin was so clean and crisp (the pictures don’t do it justice). You don’t need to bring a lot, the cabin well stocked. A grocery store is close and has everything you will need. While visiting, we traveled to near by towns to include; Highlands, Asheville, Bryson City, Cherokee and others. I highly recomend this cabin for all. Thanks for allowing us to stay at the cabin and creating a lifetime of memories. John, Robin, Sierra, and Alexa Venice Florida

What a wonderful vacation rental. This house sits on the prettiest creek we have had the pleasure of visiting. The property is also very private so you feel like you are in a world of your own. The name "Lost Canyon" is very appropriate. Its location to town is just right to be able to escape to the peaceful beauty of the mountains, but close enough so you don't have to drive forever to get anyplace. My favorite time was in the afternoon when we would return from our day out and I would retreat to the back deck with my book. Just the sound of rushing water and the little waterfalls running right past you was enough to make it a perfect day. Our older kids enjoyed exploring the creek quite frequently. This house is set up nicely with everything you will need to enjoy a comfortable stay away from home. We went on our favorite hikes and trips to our special places in the area, but we really looked forward to returning to this cozy home and enjoying a peaceful dinner especially when we barbecued on the front deck by the creek. Thank you Kathryn and family for sharing your special place. I would recommend your retreat for anyone wanting a neat and clean "home away from home" vacation at a very affordable price.

This cabin was great - we had such a good time. A creek runs right through the backyard and past the side of the cabin. The parents could sit on one of two decks, drinking coffee and reading books, while the kids mucked around in the creek - building dams, looking for garnets, and catching crayfish and salamanders. After a hard day of playing, everyone slept great with the creek as our "white noise machine". Plenty of activities to keep busy; two days we just hung out at the cabin and took walks along the road, one day we did the waterfalls and the gem museum and one day we went gem mining. The listing description was accurate and the cabin and location are even better than the photos! The cabin was very clean, well-maintained and had everything we needed for cooking and sleeping for five people. The owner was very helpful and fast in asnwering questions. I have already recommended this property to several friends. The property may not be suitable for those with toddlers as the creek really is right out the door. But it was perfect for our three nature-loving 8-year-old boys.
