The Building at Lewis Farm is a cottage for two (one dog or cat is also welcome) on the Southwest corner of Block Island featuring privacy and set overlooking rolling pastures, stone walls, and spectacular ocean sunsets.
Lewis Farm dates from 1817. Farming ended in 1964 and the family has since been at the forefront of the island’s open space movement. Lewis Farm sits in the middle of 400 acres of open space. The farm consists of seven dwelling units; five are occupied by family. The Building at Lewis Farm is the most secluded of all the dwellings.
On Lewis Farm we herald the land. Our focus is the land and the outdoors. The accommodations are rustic but appropriately set in the middle of quiet, elegant views of meadows and ocean looking toward southwest ledge and Montauk. An island farmer grazes 20-30 head of cattle on 40 acres just to the west of the cottage. The west-facing deck is perfect for counting the cows, or the fishing boats.
The interior first floor has a full kitchen space with needed utensils and service, coffee pot and toaster; the remainder of the first floor is a sitting room with chairs, couch, and dining table. Sleeping with two twin beds and full bath are upstairs. Linens and towels are not provided. There is an enclosed outdoor shower with hot and cold water.
There is telephone with local service and a radio but no TV. A clothes washer is available at one of the other dwellings.
Most of our clientele returns year after year for decades. New openings are rare. People who choose The Building at Lewis Farm thrive on its peace and quiet, the views, and the farm heritage. They entertain themselves with the island’s daytime outdoor activities, and evenings in town or spent quietly at home.

This meticulously clean and simple cottage was the answer to my vacation prayers. Set alone in a field with spectacular sunsets and cattle, deer and pheasant for neighbors, I never missed TV, internet or the other trappings of mainland life. My only regret is not renting it for longer! The Lewis' are lovely hosts and their dog Murphy treated my TJ like a 'brother'. I would definately recommend this rental if you're looking for quintessential peace and quiet. There is nothing "far away" on Block Island, so its remote location is not a detriment at all. I loved every moment, and look forward to returning to this tiny paradise.
