We've been at Beth and Dave's Hideaway twice (just recently at 248200 and earlier at 189237) and are delighted by each. Beth and Dave are great hosts, and having stayed at now a fair number of VRBO places over a few trips to HI, we think theirs are the best. Location, amenities, charm, warm greetings by their dog, fresh fruit, proximity to the water with great facilities offered (take a few kayak outings to get your skills up then go over to the Cpt. Cook Monument across Kealakekua Bay for a very memorable day (take a hat and a bit of lunch and borrow some snorkeling equipment). Beth and Dave also have some great books on the shelf, including reference books on the fish you'll see. Just a whole lot of fun to stay at their place.

The listing and photos were accurate. The owners were easy to deal with on both a business level (when arranging the booking and payment) and on a personal level (when trying to strap a kayak to our vehicle or planning what to see and do each day). Great hosts. The owners live on-site in a rather nice house on a hillside. This "hideaway" and their one other rental unit are tucked partially under the home and partially extending out onto the big backyard. The entire west wall of the unit is windows (well just screens actually) and we found the unit bright and fresh. Without a/c it seemed to be a perfect 75 degrees all day long and 70 degrees all night long. We had a nice feeling of privacy in our unit. Occasionally we took a break from touring and lounged by the pool (beside the house) and felt very comfortable there too. It's a nice setup. The little town of Captain Cook and this rental unit are "off the map" - there's not a resort, hotel or night club for miles. It's a neat little spot surrounded by rural homes, small farms, local folk and nature. Visiting "Place of Refuge" (a couple miles down the road) was a great spot to snorkel or sit seaside and watch the sunset. Visiting "Painted Church" (walking distance) was a really nice afternoon walk on a country road. At Kona (maybe 30 minutes drive) the beaches are a bit warmer and sunnier but also busy, busy so we were happy each day coming back to our hideaway.

We've been staying in Big Island B&Bs for many many years, and this is our new favorite. Beth is an artist, and her tapestry is her home--the two studios she rents are amazing, beautifully appointed with artworks and Hawaiiana, and looking out over a gorgeous garden full of life and birdsong (we even saw a hawk). I wish we could have stayed a month! Beth and Dave see to your every need, and we felt a real kinship with them from the start. The use of their kayaks, paddleboards and bikes makes it just that much more amazing. It's a 5 min. drive to Pu?uhonua O H?naunau National Historical Park, an amazing place in its own right, with fabulous snorkeling at Two Step and kayaking nearby. We swam with wild dolphins two days in a row, life-changing!! But on top of all there is to do is all there is to NOT do at Beth and Dave's hideaway--it is the PERFECT place to relax and recharge the batteries. We spent a lot of time just chilling, reading the fascinating collection of Hawaii books, looking at all the art on the walls, feeling the lovely breezes come through the screens (no windows! don't need 'em!), and "gecko watching"--our new calming activity. Great restaurants a short drive away, and if you wanted to you could even visit Volcano Nat'l Park as a (long) day trip (2 hrs drive each way). Next time I will plan our holiday around availability at this lovely, lovely place.

My husband and I had an amazing time spending our honeymoon here! Not only does the Hideway offer nearly everything you need for your stay, but its location provides a secluded paradise that is still just moments away from beaches, entertainment, and more! Beth and Dave are gracious hosts and have generously included everything you need for kayaking, paddle boarding, and snorkeling (along with site recommendations too). The view from the cottage is impeccable and the grounds are filled with all sorts of delicious fruit trees, beautiful birds, and other lush landscape. The cottage itself was stocked with nearly everything we needed- from beach towels to cookware to Hawaii books of all topics; we felt at home during our stay. Everything was well-kept and clean both inside and out of the cottage. We particularly enjoyed waking to the sounds of songbirds and eating breakfast on the lanai beneath the fragrant plumeria tree. We can't wait to return and with out a doubt, highly-highly recommend this place for your Hawaiian vacation!

My new wife and I are just finishing our 10 day Honeymoon stay here. It has been wonderful. Dave and Beth have a beautiful, comfortable place. They have everything you could need. The space is aesthetically beautiful, attention was given to every detail from the flowers to the fresh fruit grown in the yard. The location is tranquil and feels secluded but is close to perfect spots for snorkeling, kayaking or even dinner out. It is a great home base to tour the Island. We went from the south tip to the volcano, up for one night in Hilo, returned through waterfalls and the beautiful Hawaii Botanical Garden. Our one night away made us realize how lucky we were to have found such a perfect place to stay. To top it off they provided all the gear we needed and showed us how to put in on our rental car. This saved us time and money and allowed us to try things we might never have otherwise (Paddle boarding). Whenever we needed something it miraculously appeared on our doorstep overnight. We can't thank Dave and Beth enough. Aloha! - Lew and Willow

Our stay in the Plumeria Suite was our first time in a vacation rental, and was a wonderful experience. Beth and Dave are excellent hosts and the suite itself is so charming and clean. It is the perfect, rural alternative for people who are not into resorts. We loved watching the sun set over the bay from our lanai, picking fresh fruit in the yard, and the 5-minute drive to Two-Step for amazing snorkeling. Beth and Dave have thought of everything and the suite is well-stocked with all kinds of goodies, cooking equipment, books, and outdoor gear. We would absolutely stay here again and recommend it to our friends.

The suite is beautiful, immaculate, peaceful and a totally romantic setting. It is spacious and has everything you may ever need with a fully equipped kitchen. It is a real home away from home. The decor is Hawaiian island-style, really unique and very tasteful. The gecko family that lives in the kitchen is a delight. There is a dog and a cat on the property but they are not allowed near the guests unless you want to be around them. They are both very cute and adorable. The kayaks and all kinds of different boards come really handy. There is a wonderful snorkeling place nearby (Captain Cook) where you can only go if you have a kayak. You can park your car right in front of the cottage. The owners are super helpful, friendly and very generous. When we checked in, there was a huge, ripe avocado, bananas and papayas in our kitchen and we even had some absolutely delicious Kona coffee! When we left, we even received a small farewell gift! We had an amazing vacation in this lovely suite. It is everything you can dream of. It is in a quite place of the island surrounded with lush vegetation, yet conveniently close to the major sites. We highly recommend it to everyone and hope to be back one day!

Even though I read the reviews, we still weren't prepared for this little slice of heaven. At first I was taken back by the lack of A/C, with only screens on the windows, not glass. We soon realized the beauty of it as the altitude breezes kept us cool, augmented by the fan only on occasion. It was an absolute delight to have *fresh* air the entire time we were there - we slept beautifully, too. Even thought the eintre front of the unit is screen, it's still very private as there is just lawn and view in front of you. The only eyes on you might be the three geckos that hung out with us. Dave's directions were perfect and he met us on arrival, showing us the property, the backway out and the amenities, including the fresh fruit and coffee. We picked up a loaf of the Punalu'u bread for toast at the grocery store and that, combined with the fruit we had from Dave and Beth, with the coffee made a perfect breakfast each morning. We also brought back ribs for dinner one night, taking advantage of our little kitchen and dining area. We enjoyed using the kayak to go to Captain Cook Monument (which you can see from the unit), accompanied by dolphins, for great snorkeling. Also, the day we left we drove the 5 minutes to Two Steps to get a snorkel in at 7a and be back in time to leave for our early afternoon flight. It was a wonderful location for a relaxing holiday. Sepaking of kayak - there is everything here that you need - fins, masks, snorkels, water shoes, kayak, beach towels, books, CDs, DVDs... you don't need to pack more than a couple bathing suits, shorts and shirts or sun dresses. It's not the resort feel of the Kona resorts, but it's a much more personal and immediate island experience. Just writing this takes me back to those trade winds and island scents. We loved it and we'll be back. Mahalo.
