Great Value Oceanfront Bungalow!
- Minimum stay:5-14 nights
- Internet:Yes
- Pets allowed:No
- Wheel chair accessible:No
This is a private, very relaxing oceanfront property close to the quaint town of Hilo on the Big Island of Hawaii. Very old Hawaiian feeling - not touristy with the traffic and crowds of the Kona side. Our weather here south of the town of Hilo is typically half the amount of rain than Hilo and most of it is at night. Our days are usually clear, bright blue skies and the nice trade winds coming off the ocean.
The bungalows are decorated for the tropical feel with ocean views from all rooms and jungle adjacent. Lots of coconut palms, gardenia, red ginger, and other tropical plants around the home and a rolling lawn area down to the cliffs where you can watch the surf, sea turtles or whales depending on the time of year. There's even a BBQ and picnic table down at the waters edge for some great meals.
The home is completely self contained with everything you need for a great vacation. All linens are provided, utensils, books, games, etc. so you don't have to bring the extras. The main house consists of 1 bedroom, 1 bath with living area, dining area, complete kitchen and laundry facilities in the bath. Perfect for 1 couple with 1 or 2 children. The dettached 2nd bedoom has a queen bed with sitting area and newly remodeled bathroom. You have the choice of one bedroom only or 2 bedrooms, priced accordingly but we do not rent out the 2nd bedroom separately for our guests privacy.
This is a very quiet rural area with other rental properties and retirees who love the islands and outdoor activities. The home is private but not secluded.

We arrived late at night not knowing what to expect. The creatures of the area were making all kinds of noise and it was warm. Being my first time to this area and growing up in Houston Texas I was having fears about mosquitos and humidity which would never let me sleep. What a wonderful suprise we had. No bugs and a cool breeze coming off the shore make it great sleeping weather and even the temporary rain storm never stayed long. The house is fully stocked of anything we might need, it was clean and well maintained. The view just feet away from the back door was just amazing and just a special place that we hope we can come back to again. Could not ask for a better place!!! This place was better than is described! Thanks again...Recommended for: Families with teenagers, sightseeing, families with young children, romantic getaway, age 55+.
Owner response: Aloha Jon and Family! Thank you so much for a nice review. We always appreciate feed back and comments to better accommodate our guests. We're so glad you enjoyed our piece of paradise here on the east side of the island and hope to have you return in the future. Mahalo nui loa and Aloha!

We stayed for a full week (4/18-4/25/12) and couldn't have been happier! The photos online cannot come close to the spectacular setting of this house - it has to be seen to be understood. The location was off the beaten path - there are no touristy venues close by. But it was very easy to get to Hilo and Pahoa for provisions. In fact, Hilo itself seems to be the working person's version of Hawaii - more down to earth and less glitzy than other locations/islands. This is not to say that there are no fun activities to do here! DO spring for a helicopter ride over Kilauea. DO take a trip to the top of Mauna Kea to watch the sunset. Visit the hot tidal pools at the parks nearby. But best of all, relax in the back yard and listen to the ocean. Oh - the frogs at night are noisy, but quite soothing for background noise for sleeping when joined by the sound of the waves splashing. We liked the relatively new grocery stores in Pahoa so we tended to go there vs. Hilo. On our last night there, we found a great italian cafe in Hilo - on a somewhat "main" road in town which we had somehow overlooked. It might pay to do some research ahead of time if you want to find specific types of facilities. Shelley and Jeff couldn't have been nicer to work with, and helpful with any questions we had. Arrangements were extremely easy via email, and instructions for accessing the house were easy as pie. Can you tell we loved the place?? My husband did not want to leave. Yes - it rained nearly every day. Overnight a gentle rain would fall, and by 10:00 the next morning it would be sunny with bright blue beautiful skies. It rained one day during the middle of the day - a lot of rain. But a quick trip to the store for ice cream and hunkering down to watch some videos back "at home" made that another day in paradise. Don't think twice about making plans to stay at this gorgeous oceanfront treasure!Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway.

If you want to kick back and relax, this is the rental for you! While the area offers a wide variety of activities plus places to see, we spent most of our time at the property enjoying the surroundings.....the grounds are gorgeous, the ocean is just a short walk from the lanai (humpback whales and green sea turtles), and the birds keep us company. The residential neighborhood is quiet. The house is very clean and quite comfortable. The kitchen is stocked with almost anything you could want to cook your meals at home. We took great advantage of the nearby farmer's markets for fresh fruits and vegetables. Shelley and Jeff are ideal hosts; they respond quickly to any questions or concerns. We like this rental so much that we've stayed here two years in a row and have already booked for next year.Recommended for: Sightseeing, romantic getaway, age 55+, girls getaway.

From the time we pulled up into the driveway to the sad moment we had to leave, we loved our stay at the bungalow! What makes a great trip perfect is when there isn't anything that you could think of that is missing. From the fully furnished kitchen to the hot tub and other little things, our stay was made perfect by all of the little details. We could pack a cooler and snorkel gear for day trips and make dinner when we came home our lounge around the backyard all day, reading some of the many books that are available in the living room. The description is very accurate, the house was very well maintained (the bedding was very comfy!) and it was in a quiet neighborhood. The only activities we really did during our stay was drive around to sightsee, explore Hilo and the black sands beaches. We highly reccommend visiting the Mauna Loa macadamia nut plantation! Don't expect all of the hustle and bustle of typical Hawaiian tourist hotspots. This part of the island is very close to many different natural attractions, like volcanoes, waterfalls and countless places to hike or swim. Hilo is great for their beaches though and close enough to get to everyday but far enough to enjoy your privacy and serenity. Shelley even came over one day to show us the additional studio and give some pointers on real estate. You couldn't ask for anything more and we were very thankful that we had this opportunity to stay here. Thank you Shelley and Jeff! Mahalo! Rhett and JordanaRecommended for: Sightseeing.

We really enjoyed our stay here - so comfortable and relaxing! It felt like home away from home and gave us a true sense of living, not just staying, in Hawaii. It was very clean and provided a lot of extras. The location is great for exploring this side of the island and has good restaurants nearby in Pahoa. And, Shelley was a pleasure to work with from beginning to end. Aloha and mahalo!Owner response: Thank you Norma & Steve for the nice comments, and also very nice meeting you both. We're happy to hear all the nice words, comments from our guests, especially those in the guest book and all the return renters we've had over the years proves it's a great place to stay. Mahalo and Aloha!

It was aloha at first sight when we pulled up to Jeff and Shelly's wonderful bungalow! We have been to Hawaii several times, and we always try to steer clear of the sterile, processed resorts or hotels, in favor of a more authentic Hawaiian experience. My Hawaii Dream certainly fit the bill! It had all the amenities of a charming shore home, yet its secluded location and peaceful environment made us feel as though we were the only ones on the island! Even so, it was very accessible to many of the sights and adventures that the windward side of the Big Island has to offer, and Jeff & Shelly were always only a phone call away and eager to offer tips and local info. We couldn't beat the price, either - this was far and away the best value we have encountered, and we would recommend it to anyone who wants to immerse themselves in Hawaii. We invited good friends to come with us, and as this was their first time in Hawaii, we are SO glad they had such a good experience with our accommodations! Thanks to Shelly and Jeff for making our Hawaiian Dream become a reality! Much aloha and a thousand mahalos, Ben & Jess and Matt & Sarah, Parkesburg & Elverson, PADid you find this review helpful?
