Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 1995
Talk about local history with the current owners, Peggy and Tom O'Malley, who were both born in Atascadero. Tom grew up next door in a house built by his father in the 1940's. Tom's first job was working in the "Colony Orchard" at the historic home right next door. The main house was built for Harry and Minnie Peterson in 1927 by Russell Pysher, the brother-in-law of Minnie Peterson. He was also the head carpenter at the Huntington Hotel in Pasadena for most of his career. Harry was one of the first businessmen in Atascadero and Minnie was a local artist. Some of her work is now on display at this home along with paintings of local scenes painted by Tom's grandmother, mother and other local artists. Ironwork in the living room and dining room was created by Edward Trinkeller, a craftsman who worked on Hearst Castle. Peggy and Tom continue the tradition of using local craftsmen to faithfully restore, maintain and expand their home. For example, local artist Mark Greenaway created the many wayfinding signs in use around the property.
Why the Owner Chose Atascadero
We bought this property as our family home in 1995 because of its beautiful location and interesting local and personal history. We love living in Atascadero as well as being close to so many great places to explore: To the north we have; Hearst Castle - 45 min., Cambria/Cayucos - 35 min., Morro Bay - 20 min., Paso Robles - 10 min., Historic Templeton - 5 min. To the south we have; San Luis Obispo/Cal Poly - 20 min., Avila & Pismo Beaches - 30 min., Los Olivos, Buelton,Solvang - 1 hour & 15 min. We are also located about 1/2 hour from several lakes: Nacimiento, San Antonio, Santa Margarita, and Lopez. Because of our interest in California History we are pleased to be close to three of the original California Missions; San Luis Obispo de Tolosa, San Miguel de Archangel, and San Antonio de Padua.

We came up for my sons Cal Poly graduation and wanted to avoid all the chaos and traffic in SLO. We got what we wished for and then some. This place is a gem! We loved the grounds and the country feel, plus it's just a short scenic drive down to campus. I would recommend this for any occasion, it was perfect!

My boyfriend and I stayed at the guest house for 3 nights over Labor Day weekend and had a really relaxing time. Peggy and Tom have were extremely nice with helping us book the place and the welcome muffins were delicious! The house is quiet and private and conveniently located near the 101 and grocery stores via a short drive. One note: the wifi connection is spotty at best so don't expect too much online access though it was probably good at preventing us from trying to work over the weekend :) Cell service is good though (I have Verizon).

I was thrilled when my friend from Atascadero told me about the Portola Inn. In the past I have stayed at the local hotels which I found too sterile & impersonal, just places to sleep. The Inn, however, is a cherished refuge, a place to wander the grounds, sit and reflect, a place of incredible natural beauty. My sister's family and I stayed over a three day weekend. The cottage was roomy and comfortable. The grounds around it exquisite. Towering oaks and the sounds of a stream greeted us. I loved seeing the wildlife! We saw quail, heard frogs and admired lizards. Leaving the grounds, my nieces and I were surprised by a mother deer & her two fawns. We were delighted! The owners, Tom & Peggy, went out of their way to make us feel welcomed and comfortable. Such lovely people! I would recommend this rental without reservation.

We - a family of 4 with 2 kids (9 and 12yr) and our 4 yr old yorkie poo, had a fantastic 5-day stay at the guest house in July. Exactly the kind of place we were looking for: a beautiful and peaceful setting among oak trees...only a short drive from Morrow Bay, SLO and Cambria/Hearst Castle area. The hosts, Peggy and Tom were wonderful - they went out of their way to make sure we had a comfortable stay: from providing homemade apricot muffins on our arrival, to setting up the outdoor fireplace for us to enjoy. The guest house was clean and very comfortably furnished, and stocked with enough videos and games to keep the family entertained after dark. We look forward to our next visit here!!

Tom and Peggy, Thanks! The property is just beautiful. It was perfect for our stay and Cal Poly graduation celebration. Tom, thanks for the extra efforts to see that all the little things were available to us. The coffee was most welcomed. We enjoyed our stay as did our guests. Thanks again, Nancy and Denis

Portola Inn....what precious memories we now carry with us. This trip couldn't have started any sweeter than with your warm welcome of your home made peach cake. Serene, beautiful, and charming. Just a few ways of many to describe your property. From the quaint little gardens hugging the sides of the drive way leading to the house, to the peaceful private picnic area where you can hear the calls of the Quails. Almost didn't feel the need to leave the property. The open kitchen area made it that much easier for us food enthusiasts to perform our cooking skills all at the same time. For all you lovers of nature and outdoors activities, this is an ideal place to stay. With options of trails for short night walks under the stars and nearby beautiful windy roads for a scenic bike ride. Thank you for being available to us whenever we had a question or needed anything. We will back, soon!

We were looking for a quiet place where we could bring our two little dogs. We found the guest house very clean, quiet, and comfortable. There is a small fenced back yard for the dogs, and a nice area to walk them. The Portola Inn is close to town and is accurately portrayed by the pictures. It is located within a 20 minute drive of several award-wining wineries. There are amazing oak trees on the property, and lots of flowers and manicured lawns. We saw deer most mornings. There is a small park-like area with a swing, barbeque, and picnic tables. We enjoyed a bottle of local wine out there with some smoked salmon, cheese and crackers that we bought at a Trader Joe's that's about 5 miles away. The super nice proprietor gave us great advise on where to eat, although the guest house has a full kitchen. We especially liked the folks at the Haven, where we ate hot sandwiches and drank wonderful wine from local wineries. We found Atascadero to be a community of friendly people. The guest house is not fancy, but we gave it an excellent rating because it exceeded our expectations and was exactly what we needed.
