There has never been a better time that to visit Sebastopol. Sebastopol has the exuberant charm of an old fashioned farming town. Thanks to Russian trappers, who first planted the Gravenstein apple in the 1800s, it became known as the Gravenstein capital of the world. But times change and beginning in the late 60s to the present time, apples continue to give way to grapes, particularly Burgundy varietals. Since the mid 1990s, Sebastopol has become a “new theater for wine grapes…first in blends, then in vineyard-designated wines.” (S.F Chronicle, 8.29.2008). Home ranches for some of the most notable wineries are located in and around Sebastopol.
The house is located at the gateway to the Russian River and Sonoma Coast wine regions of Sonoma County, CA. To help triangulate the location, it is 15 miles inland (east) of Bodega Bay on the Sonoma coast. Bodega is one of the entry points for fresh catch seafood entering the Bay Area and Wine Country destinations: hotels, restaurants, and markets large and small, including country farmers markets. It is 58 miles north of downtown San Francisco, 3 miles west of the town of Sebastopol, 39 miles west of the town of St. Helena in the Napa Valley. The picturesque town of Healdsburg is just 25 miles to the north with its world-class shopping, ambiance, and restaurants.
You enter the property from the road through a coded gate and proceed up a long driveway where the house is situated amid 100 acres of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Pinot Gris vineyards. It is part of a working ranch so farming activity may be present from time to time. While close to vibrant towns and farmers markets, the property itself is quietly isolated from city lights and noise, where each visitor can relax and find their own spot in the peace and privacy of your own country home, and get used to the sounds of silence at night. The house is light and airy, with hardwood floors throughout, a modern kitchen & amenities, gourmet cookware, two full baths, and granite countertops in both the kitchen and bathrooms. It has a satellite, flat panel plasma Sony TV, and a Bose sound system. Outside there is a patio covered with a trellis of Wisteria, and a Dimension spa on the deck, a perfect spot to see the Big Dipper in the night sky.
Sebastopol and the surrounding area is rich in artisan farms including organic, biodynamic, and sustainably farmed products, which include livestock, poultry, row crops, tree fruits, cheeses, micro dairies, and artisanal breads and olive oils. In addition to the garden-fresh foods that abound in the area, dozens of award-winning wineries are nearby or an easy, bucolic, and uncongested drive through the Sonoma Coast and along the Russian River, through Dry Creek Valley, and the Alexander Valley just outside Healdsburg. Country markets in Sebastopol, Healdsburg, Occidental, and Santa Rosa introduce visitors to the variety of micro producers so prominent in the area.
