Shooting Star vacation rental is located on an eco-friendly Olive Farm in the middle of the famous wine growing region of Anderson Valley, Mendocino County, Northern California. This is the founding home of Stella Cadente Olive Oil Company and the olive oil from the property has won the "best in show" twice at the Oils of the World Competition. We harvest our Italian olives in mid-November and usually have a harvest party on-site to celebrate this event.
This area is very similar to Tuscany with rolling hillsides and climate that can dip to freezing. Our Frantoio, Leccino, Coratina and Pendolino trees thrive here and U.C. Davis has a "test plot" on the property to monitor other varietels. There are five such plots in California. A picnic table is set-up close to one of the olive groves and it is a sheer pleasure to watch the trees wave in the breeze as their leaves change from silver to green. The vacation house is a typical Mendocino Barnhouse with vaulted ceilings, super Saltillo pavers and a modern feeling.
The kitchen and dining room are part of the Great Room and there's a wide spiral staircase that leads to a loft bedroom. The master bedroom has a artisan-crafted steel bed and an en-suite bathroom with a tiled shower double shower heads. Relax in the 6-person hot tub at night, sipping a glass of pinot noir and enjoy the myriad of stars that blanket the sky.
There are 35 wineries in Anderson Valley and the cult-following Breggo Cellars is just a 2-minute walk away from the house. This Valley is famous for it's pinot noir and champagne producers including Duckhorn's GoldenEye from Napa and Roederer Estates from France.
This Valley is a must visit for food and wine aficionados and a more stunning to stay would be hard to find!
From time to time we hold "sensory evaluation and olive tree growing classes" for people who want a gain more insight into the world of extra virgin olive oil and how to get started planting olive trees. Be sure to ask if there is a class scheduled in time for your visit.

Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 1993
We live on site (in another house) at this beautiful 20 acre ranch and now travel a lot. We founded Stella Cadente Olive Oil Company that has won the Best Domestic Olive Oil at the Oils of the World Competition twice. We have also won numerous other awards both internationally and domestically. No other olive oil company has matched this. Our partner in Butte County now runs the company full time and we have taken a rest to pursue other endeavors - writing and photography. Our soil and weather patterns are similar to Tuscany and this is the reason we chose to plant Leccino, Frantoio, Pendolino and Coratina varietals on this property.

We had a relaxing weekend celebrating our Okasan's 83rd birthday. Enjoyed the olive trees and dining al fresco, "skinny dipping" with my mother-in-law, hiking, bbqing fresh wild caught salmon (from the Boonville Farmers Market), dinner at the Boonville Hotel, playing frisbee on the lawn and the Navarro barrel tasting party. Great record collection. Thank you Sue and Tom for a wonderful place.

My husband and I stayed here for two nights in mid august 2011 with our fourteen month old daughter. We brought a pack-n-play and had her sleep in the loft so we could move freely on the main floor after she went to sleep. She had a great time crawling and walking around on the smooth cool tiles on the main floor while she played. Hubby and I loved the wonderful deck and hot tub, enjoyed under a bed of stars. The house was clean and comfortable. The hospitality was lovely and not at all over bearing. Location was great, walking distance to Breggo. Nice to not have to bring my hair dryer too. Also, unexpectedly to us being from chicago, they did not need air conditioning...even though temps got into the 90s I think, it was cool in the house and it cooled off so nicely in the evening. We needed to wear pants and long sleeves later in the night (aside from hot tub time!) and in the cool mornings. This was our first time to Anderson valley and what a relaxing, pleasant place!

We came up for the Boonville Beer Festival and we sure are glad that we stayed here. The place is very clean, comfy beds, grounds are beautiful, hot tub is nice and warm, especially on cool evenings. The dogs had a great time playing in all the open space. Tom and Sue are very sweet and accomodated us nicely. Thanks so much for a great weekend. Hopefully we can stay again next time we come up to Boonville.

Thank you so much for your warm hospitality. We enjoyed our stay immensly, basking in the peacefullness and beauty of The Olive Farm. We LOVED the house, the deck, the view and the unbelievably starry sky at night. You don't see that in NY. Thanks too for the olive oil...it made our farmers market goodies taste all the better. All the best to you both. Warm regards.
