If you are looking for a peaceful retreat with incredible water and nature views, you have found it. This farmhouse cottage is located on a private estate, and offers acres of open land with views of the Long Island Sound and the mouth of the Connecticut River. There is access to a private beach where you will often be the only people you can see. There are plenty of things to do in the Old Lyme area, with unique shops and art galleries.
Peaceful retreat: This secluded second story cottage, located on a private lane, rests in a former barnyard with fantastic views of Long Island Sound, the mouth of the Conn. River, Saybrook lighthouses, marshes and coves teeming with birds. Access by car to a secluded beach half a mile away, open fields with walking paths are just the beginning of this quiet private place. A huge deck for entertaining, a covered carport and laundry facility are included. It's name is 'Udder Heaven' because it once housed the dairy, when the farm was active.
Cottage details: The cottage is on the second floor, requiring climbing stairs. Pets are welcome, $50 per week cleaning fee. We ask smokers to use the deck just outside the living room. Cleaning services can be arranged. Please bring your own linens and towels, there are 2 twin beds and one queen bed, plus a convertible couch. The kitchen is fully equipped, ceiling fans and air conditioners in the heat, a small heater for chillier days. Because there is no heat, the cottage is closed during winter. Utilities are part of the rent, local phone service is provided, basic cable TV and a DVD player are included. The normal rental period is from 2:00 PM on Saturday to 9:30 AM Saturday, so we can squeeze in a thorough cleaning.
Old Lyme environs: Old Lyme is a central location for many activities. Near the cottage are small rivers and coves convenient for kayaking and sailing. The Mystic Seaport is but an hour away, as are Gillette's Castle, the Essex Steam Train (and boat ride), the Florence Griswold Art Museum, the Godspeed Opera House for summer shows, Chamard Vineyard, golf and fine dining (The Griswold Inn in Essex) and the best pizza, ice cream, and grinder shops in New England. Peace and quiet are the watchwords on this private lane. A complete visitors handbook is available in the cottage with directions to all the attractions and facilities nearby.

A lovely place

"Away from it all" is the right tag for this cottage apartment. Very peaceful. The three of us had a grand time exploring the fields and beach at the height of the autumn color. The estate is good for long walks, birdwatching, photography, and is a short drive to the stately towns of Old Lyme with its art museum and Old Saybrook, which also offers good shopping. The place is nicely equipped, the kitchen spacious, and the beds cozy. A rural Connecticut feel, all very tasteful. The owners were particularly helpful. We plan to go back in warmer weather.
Owner response:Our place in Old Lyme fulfills anyone's desire to get away from it all. The privacy, the quiet, the wildlife, and the views are unique and reach out to our guests. Our family treasurers this spot for the very reasons described in our tennant's message, we invite you to join us in Old Lyme.

I would love to say that our stay at Udder Heaven was for a vacation, but we were in the area for some serious family business. And despite all the heavy duty family issues we had to deal with, Udder Heaven proved to be utterly heavenly. It provided us such a sweet sense of home, coziness, efficiency, and endless hours of shore walking where life could be contemplated and problems worked out. We all sat for hours reading books either sitting by a window or on the deck often looking up to take in the inspiring, charming scenery. And if we found we were in need of something, we very much appreciated the thoughtfulness and kindness of the proprietors with their help or suggestions. It was wonderful to feel part of the Griswold history, and to be ensconced in a community that includes a wildlife bird sanctuary, quiet beach, rolling pastures, walking paths, the sounds of distant fog horns, and the occasional neighborly conversation. What a delightful place that offered so much good and made our difficult family situation a joy to remember.

If you are looking for a quite, peaceful and relaxing place to stay, look no further you've found it. We enjoyed our lunches out on the deck while watching the boats pass by in the distance. Our kids loved walking on Griswold Point looking at the shells and rocks and many birds that live there. We found it to have a very rustic charm that we liked but were able to keep three kids of different ages content by going to the nearby icecream shop or hopping onto 95 and visiting Mystic, the outlets and the movies. The kitchen was well stocked and we have already reccommended the place to friends.

This property provided the perfect vacation for us because it was quiet and beautiful, close to shopping, restaurants and sightseeing, while away from the summer crowd. We took the opportunity to take relaxing walks on the property. We enjoyed watching the birds, deer and rabbits.I have recommended this property to friends but I am reluctant to share with too many others because I want to return. The cottage is upstairs and I would not recommend it for small children or anyone who is challenged by stairs. The cottage was clean and uncluttered.

A " peaceful retreat" is a great discription, for this cottage. My husband, and I, and our two children really enjoyed our stay here. The grounds were great for us to go walking, biking, and fishing. The cottage was very well equipped for all of our needs. It was a short distance for us to be able to enjoy the attractions of the Mystic Aquarium, and Roger Williams Zoo(RI). A great New England getaway. Everybody was very helpful and welcoming. We plan on going back again.
