L'Ecole began its life as a rural two room school house in 1900. Over the years it has had numerous additions and its nooks and crannies are part of it's charm. There are lots of windows to let in the natural light and frame peaceful views of nature. We have many feeders and birdhouses to attract the birds. It is not unusual to see deer grazing in the open areas in the evenings.
The living room has a big gas fireplace where you can curl up on the sofa with a good book or spend time in conversation with friends. There is also a family room with plenty of sitting space and a dining table for entertaining. Our kitchen is fully functional and has a keurig coffee maker with an assorted supply of coffees, teas and hot chocolate, so you can have a fresh beverage at any time. The laundry room has a washer and dryer for use with extended stays.
Three bedrooms are on the first floor- Martha's (queen), Virginia's (full) and Sally's (queen).Upstairs is the "dormitory" with two twin beds and a full sized bed. The other upstairs bedroom(Teacher's) has a queen bed.
There are two decks,come rock there. L'Ecole has plenty of space for children to run. A gas grill is provided should you want to have a cook-out.Our backyard pets, several hens, even produce breakfast and you can gather your own eggs if you like and there is no rooster to awaken you! Come stay at L'Ecole and make it your home for a while!

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2002

Bob and Joan Clapp, moved to Palmyra from Northern Virginia when Bob retired from government service. With children now residing in many states and Europe they make Palmyra their home base. They are now willing to share their interesting home which was a two room school at the turn of the century. They now use the "treehouse" apartment as their "quarters" when in the area, leaving the large home for friends, family and guests.

Why the Owner Chose Charlottesville

After Bob's retirement from government service, it was Joan's desire to return to her "roots"(She's a Charlottesville native) and what is more perfect than having your home in an area listed as one of the top 10 places to live in America.

The Unique Benefits of this House

Our property has the best of both worlds- it is a peaceful country property with proximity to the beautiful homes of Monticello, Ashlawn, and historic Michie Tavern. Jefferson Vineyards, and Fork Union Military Academy (FUMA) and Charlottesville, are nearby. Easy day trips can be launched here to Washington ,D.C., Richmond and Fredricksburg.
L'Ecole has large rooms with plenty of space for the entire family. There are 4 bedrooms and two baths and the perfect bonus space of the "dormitory" with multiple beds,which can be used as the "kid space." The 2 acres have woodland and mountain views and an abundance of wildlife for your enjoyments.Our newest addition- the hens, provide an unique way to serve breakfast!

    • We were unable to secure lodging in the immediate Charlottesville area for our son's May, 2010 graduation, so found L'Ecole through VRBO, & how lucky for us...we just spent a beautiful Fall weekend there and we loved it! It's a very drivable distance from the center of Charlottesville, and has the advantage of a beautiful, serene setting. Joan & Bob (owners) live nearby and are available for anything if you need them....except you won't, because they've thought of everything! The house is cozy, comfy, very clean, and well-appointed and offers plenty of space for every guest. L'Ecole is simply lovely and a real find...I'm glad I never found a room in town; otherwise, I'd have never discovered this wonderful place and its awesome proprietors, Joan & Bob...they welcome you like family. Don't pass up the chance to experience L'Ecole!

    • I stayed at L'Ecole School House in July with my sister and six of her friends to celebrate my sister's upcoming wedding. It was a beautiful home, very clean and comfortable, and Joan was lovely to us. She helped me find a local spa so we could have pedicures, recommended nearby restaurants and even provided a welcoming gift for our weekend (wine and homemade bon bons!). The house is very close to some beautiful vineyards (we highly recommend Blenheim) and of course Monticello and downtown Charlottesville. While they live in a separate house on the property, the Clapps were very unobtrusive and seemed to only show up when we needed something. I would definitely recommend this property for anyone looking for a relazing getaway in a beautiful setting.

    • I visited L'Ecole on August 20, 2009 in the hopes of booking it for an October mini family reunion. I would like to comment on how absolutely charming both the accommodations and the owner/proprietor Joan were. The place is absolutely spotless and very lovingly cared for. Unfortunately, more and more of our family decided to attend, and although there is lots of room and such beautiful grounds, we simply ended up having too many people. And it certainly was my pleasure to meet such a warm and welcoming owner. I am writing this review in the hopes that others who read it, will take the time and the opportunity to certainly consider booking L'Ecole for their visit to Charlottesville. Thank you Joan for such a nice visit and you will certainly be highly recommended to any travellers I come across!! Sincerely, Mary Ellen Monogue
