Location: Cirencester, England, United Kingdom, Europe (2hrs London, 45min Bristol, 1hr Birm'Ham, 30min Cheltenham)

Accommodations:  Cottage-Annex, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath (Sleeps 4-6)

The ground floor of the East Wing in a very special Grade II listed, holiday let in the beautiful Cotswold village of Chalford. Just a short drive away is the 'Capital of the Cotswolds' Cirencester, Painswick, Cheltenham, Stroud, the antiques center of Tetbury, the World Heritage City of Bath, Bourton-on-the-Water and much more.

The recently refurbished accommodation comprises a small porch, opening into a modern kitchen/living area complete with wood burner. There are 2 bedrooms and 1 bathroom sleeping a maximum of 6 with up to 2 doubles, 1 twin(which can be turned into another double as it is a "Zip & link" bed) and a double sofa bed in the living room area. The property benefits from a private terrace and garden.

The cottage annex forms part of a large listed property, once occupied by the owner of one of the local mills. The cottage part of the house is believed to be about 400 years old in contrast to the more 'modern' Georgian West Wing of the house added around 1820 by the mill owner.

Chalford is in some of the most beautiful countryside in the whole range of the Cotswolds (and even the country). Nestled in the Golden Valley, one of Stroud's Five Valleys, Chalford is described as the Alpine Village with its steep hills and houses perched along small donkey tracks. A walkers' paradise with beautiful scenery around every corner. The narrow High Street winds its way through the village past an amazing array of characterful cottages. Chalford was once a centre for the wool industry, with many Listed mills dotted along the old Thames and Severn Canal. Many houses you still can't drive to and the community of Chalford has even re-established use of a donkey for grocery deliveries! In the village is a small shop run by volunteers selling a selection of lovely organic goodies and a short walk away are some great pubs for beer, wine, good food and stunning sunsets.

Please note: There is also a beautiful 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom loft available to rent either with the Cottage or separately. Check out listing # 251224 on VRBO and a separate website is currently under development.

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2005

My husband and I fell in love with our beautiful Grade II listed home in the Cotswolds. We bought it in 2005 and have been lovingly refurbishing it since along with occasional help (and hindrance) from our young daughter, Freya, and our playful chocolate Labrador, Revel.

Why the Owner Chose Cirencester

We already knew the village of Chalford - the Alpine village as it is often known - and loved the strong community feel, the beautiful valley and walks plus being so accessible from across the country. The Saturday morning donkey deliveries are a plus for guests and us as well!

The Unique Benefits of this Cottage-Annex

Where to start? There are so many things to do from staying nearby and enjoying the walks, the river, the fresh air and beautiful Cotswold villages to travelling a little further and seeing the regency town of Bath or the spires of Oxford or the race courses, the polo, the wildlife park, playing golf, groceries delivered by donkey to your doorstep ..... Even a day-trip to London is possible with a 1.25 hour train journey into Paddington.

    • Don’t normally do reviews but we had such a wonderful time I thought I should. If you don’t know this part of the Cotswold’s then you are in for a treat and where better to start than staying in this wonderful Cottage in the heart of this very beautiful village of Chalford. The cottage is spacious, warm and well equipped and part of what can only be described as a very grand house sitting in the middle of the village. Your hosts are helpful yet discrete, in the mornings you wake up to nothing but the sound of birds singing in the trees. If you are early enough you can have fresh bread and croissants delivered to your door by the village Donkey much to the amazement of our two year old daughter. You will soon discover as you walk through the village that everyone is very friendly and life has slowed down to a very comfortable pace. Everything in the village is within walking distance and there are some wonderful walk along the canal or up onto the common land most of which will take in wonderful pubs most of which will serve wonderful food and good ale as well as your fizzy larger. Conclusion: Do I really have to go back to work next week?

What an idyllic little spot! We woke to the birds and nothing else. Peace and quiet and lovely views of the valley. Sitting on the patio with a glass of wine and hearing the owls hooting in the trees in the evening - it doesn't get much better than that. The brilliant kids playground (with stream that all kids and dogs seem unable to avoid!) was perfect for my two girls - they loved paddling about and zipping along the zip wire - only a minute away. The walks are stupendous - and lots to choose from - so good if you have little children and want explore the woods (full of celandine and bluebells in Spring) or want to stride uphill for ages all the way to pub in France Lynch! The local shop is great - brilliant fresh bread, papers, wine and usual necessities. Even though the cottage is annexed to the house it all feels very private and the owners are delightful and keen to please. We walked to a couple of pubs were the food was really good (Red Lion in village ok for drink and occasional live music but not food). Cirencester is a 15 min drive away and we had best chinese in ages - also great leisure centre if weather gets grim and kids need entertaining. Stroud Farmers Market which we went to early on Saturday is really amazing - wide range of local produce and lovely with it. Good bookshops for adults and kids and Woodruffs do perfect coffee if you missing a cosmopolitan cappucino. We also took girls riding to Barton End Stables - highly successful (you can drop into brilliant deli/oyster bar in Nailsworth on your way back - had glowing write up in Sunday Times). All in all a pretty little cottage in a great location. Highly recommended.
