Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 1962
Our family cabin was built when my brother and I were small children. Our parents had the foresight to purchase two lots in a newly established Camano Island beach community. They built and landscaped a simple 2-bedroom home on the beachfront lot and across the street a tennis court to allow us to play our favorite family sport. Three neighbor families have been part of our 'beach compound' since the beginning, sharing the tennis court and our summer holidays. Together we developed strong bonds of friendship, memories and extensive photo albums! The next generation of children (numbering 21 and counting among all 4 original families) coming from points throughout North America now share the strong attachment to this special place and the people we all consider our extended family. We hope to share some of this Camano Island magic with you.
Why the Owner Chose Camano Island
Camano Island is unique in its convenient automobile access via bridge. The town of Stanwood is only 15 minutes from our cabin door where you will find most anything you might need for your vacation including restaurants, banks, churches, grocery, gas, fitness, 6-screen movie theater, fresh local produce in season, gift shops, thrift shops and more. Once on the island there is also convenient grocery, banking, gas, churches, movie/game rental, gift shops, hardware, marine supply/rental, bed & breakfasts and more. If you like to stay close to home, this may be all you need to enjoy your holiday. (Check the links listed for Stanwood and Camano for current local information.) If however you are an explorer, the cabin is only 25 minutes from Washington's Interstate 5 which will transport you to some of the most exciting and beautiful sights the Northwest has to offer in a matter of minutes or hours. To the north are the spectacular water, rocky shoreline and whale pods of the San Juan Islands, easily explored via the Washington State ferry system or more closely on foot or bicycle. To the east are the Cascade Mountains with mountain biking, rock climbing, snow skiing or visit one of at least five active volcanoes in Washington State, Mount Baker just to the north and Glacier Peak east of the island both found in the North Cascades National Park. To the south are numerous choices including Everett's Future of Flight Aviation Center and Boeing Tour home to the largest building in the world (by volume) that is reported to easily pack all of Disneyland inside with room to spare; bargain shopping at Marysville's Seattle Prime Outlet shops; the Space Needle icon of Seattle's 1962 World's Fair; the famous Pike Place Market; plus so much more in the Emerald City of Seattle.
The Unique Benefits of this Cabin
This beach property is a simple home set in a glorious location. Your eastern view highlights the sunrise over the Cascade mountain range with Mt. Baker in full view to the northeast. Port Susan Bay will churn in the winter but is protected from the stronger winds found on the easily accessible west side of the island, which faces Whidby Island and the Straits of Juan de Fuca. As the sun makes it's way westward you will gain some shade on the front deck in favor of afternoon warmth on the private back patio just outside the main living space. We enjoy having most meals out on the front porch overlooking the bay and all the activity of the day. Over the protective bulkhead is a collection of beach driftwood that spans nearly the entire beach community, followed by stoney sand perfect for beachcombing then larger rocks leading to a soft sandspit. On low tide the sandspit is the center of activity -- skimboarding, softball, sandcastles, swimming, skiing, etc. High tides are fun as well as the driftwood may begin to float and move. Some days you will be fortunate to see the resident Bald Eagle family flying overhead, often posing for photos in nearby evergreens. Other activity ideas include: Picnic and beachcomb at one of the three private beaches accessible only to residents of this community. Across the island only about 10 minutes away is the Camano Island State Park. High bank views west and north to the Straits, beachcombing, clam digging, picnics and camping are popular activities here. Drive around the island easily in a short time and bike around the island in a day's time. Weekend garage sales are abundant on this island ~ a great way to find a few treasures to take home. In the summer time check out the outdoor family-oriented movies ~ bring your own lawn chairs and blankets, sit back and enjoy a show under the stars. Activities on Camano Island are truly only limited by your own imagination!
