Situated on Alabama’s picturesque Lake Martin, one of architect Bill Ingram’s latest designs has captured modern day living with the rustic appeal of an ideal lakeside retreat. The simple yet elegant lake house gives the warmth and appearance of times gone by, while on the inside, you get all the amenities of open living areas, spacious bedrooms, high-end appliances, and a generous screened porch and open deck to enjoy the beautiful sunsets.
This four bedroom, four bath, 2,700 square foot house is spread out over two levels, with each level having ample floor to ceiling windows to take in the view. The overall size of the house is plentiful for entertaining a large group, but doesn’t feel oversized for a smaller family.
Located on the main level are the kitchen, living, and dining areas, master bedroom suite and one guest suite. Heart pine flooring and tongue-and-groove wood paneling and ceilings give the space a cozy appeal, while exposed beams heighten the sense of spaciousness. To the right of the main entrance, the kitchen’s custom cabinetry with marble countertop is complimented by the oversized butcher block island. Centered in-between the cabinets are three 8 ft. tall windows that highlight the private wooded area in front of the house. A freestanding cabinet houses the French-door refrigerator and adds a unique divider from the kitchen to the entryway. On the opposite wall, a built-in, glass-door cupboard is the perfect location for the owner’s cocktail bar.
A stacked moss rock fireplace gives the living room a warm lodge feel – perfect for chilly fall nights. Seven 10 ft. tall windows and transoms extend the living room and provide a scenic view of Lake Martin. Directly in front of the windows, you’ll find the open staircase that takes you from the living room to the lower level. Wooden posts and horizontal rails create a banister for the open stairway without distracting from the view.
Just off the main living area, the master bedroom has two 8 ft. windows on each side of a glass-pane door that opens to allow a full view of the lake. A railing provides safety without distracting from the house’s architecture. The back of the moss rock chimney adds interesting detail to the room. Just off the bedroom is the dual lavatory and closet for the master bath. The polished nickel plumbing fixtures and sconce lighting compliment the marble countertop and custom built-in medicine cabinets. Ingram maximized the bathroom space by designing a custom sliding door to provide privacy for the shower and water closet. The 3 x 6-inch subway wall tile and 1-inch hexagonal floor tile lend the bathroom a retro feel.
Off the dining area is one of three guest rooms. The room’s custom built-in wardrobes and private bath with pedestal lavatory add a special touch of cabin charm to the lakeside home.
The screened-in porch, situated off the dining room, is perfect for relaxing and listening to the tranquil breeze rustling through the leaves.
The stairs from the main level lead you downstairs to the family room and two additional bedrooms and baths. Stained polished concrete floors give the room an inviting feel while providing durability for recreational use. A second moss rock fireplace extends from the floor to the ceiling while a built-in wet bar keeps guests from having to go upstairs for refreshments.
Just off the family room is the large open deck. Instead using traditional deck railing, Ingram designed the deck with a knee wall to provide safety without interfering with the view. An outdoor showerhead, located at the end of the deck, is perfect for showering off after a long day on the water.
Wooden stairs and a short walkway lead you to the private boat dock. The deck’s horizontal planks hide the framework of the house so the view from the water is as perfect as the view from the house.
