Enjoy this magical retreat just a few minutes walk from the beach. This is a very special house -- wonderfully open, bright, and serene, recalling New England beach cottages. Originally built in 1926, it has been imaginatively restored, as featured in numerous magazines, with modern touches throughout. Hear the surf at night yet enjoy canyon living in one of the prettiest, most tranquil—and exclusive—neighborhoods in Los Angeles. A variety of restaurants, upscale and casual, are a short walk away while the hip attractions and shopping of Montana Avenue, Venice, and Pacific Palisades are only a few minutes drive.

Through a gated entry, a stone pathway leads past cascading ponds with resident turtles (please feed!) to a trellised flagstone porch overlooking a lovely garden. Inside, there’s a seamless blend of the classic and modern. It’s a beautifully scaled cottage, with an airy, loft-like openness, perfect for entertaining or relaxing. Each of the bedrooms enjoys complete privacy. Floors are of douglas fir. Vaulted beamed cedar ceilings (ranging from 15 to 20 feet) give a sense of enormous space. Direct sunlight floods through huge windows and skylights. In every room, French doors open to tropical gardens, drawing the outdoors in. Ocean breezes keep the house cool, day and night. Finishes and details are of the highest quality: among the house’s many special features are an open commercial kitchen (Wolf, Sub-zero, Bosch) with marble counter, a river rock and limestone fireplace, and baths of French limestone and beautiful tile.

To the rear, there is a generous fieldstone patio featuring Weathervane furniture and a Viking grill. An open lawn leads past tall palms to a charming Guest House with sky lighted bath and kitchenette. Giant birds of paradise flank a winding path to an outdoor shower. Massive bamboo and landscaping ensure total privacy for the house.

Why the Owner Chose Santa Monica

With its legendary beaches, crescent bay, and mountains rising from the sea, Santa Monica is a place of great beauty, which might be enough. But it is also a place of immense interest and charm. Sophisticated, green, and diverse, it’s an oasis, great for families and people of all ages, offering the intimacy of small town life within the larger metropolis of Los Angeles

The Unique Benefits at this House

From the first, with its cozy shingle style and steep roof lines, my cottage reminded me of the Long Island beach town where I’d spent summers growing up. Cooled by ocean breezes, its openness, wonderful light and clean, soothing lines make for a very special beach retreat. The ocean and hiking and biking trails are moments away. You can walk to local restaurants—from the posh celeb hangout Giorgio’s and romantic Cafe Delfini to laid-back Marix Tex Mex, popular with families—and there’s a little local market. Just up the hill is Rustic Canyon Park with its playing field, tennis courts and pool. It’s a great walking neighborhood with access to all of L.A. The many movie theatres, restaurants, farmer’s markets and elegant shops of Santa Monica are moments away, along with Venice, Pacific Palisades; Malibu, with its famous surf breaks and beaches is just up the coast. All the attractions of Los Angeles –the Getty, the Music Center, and Universal City – are convenient from the Pacific Coast highway.

Owner's Map of Santa Monica

The moment I happened on Santa Monica Canyon, I knew I’d found my natural home. An open secret, unknown even to many Angelinos, it’s an unbeatable combination of seclusion and convenience. The Pacific Coast highway may be moments away, but you’d never know it. With its rich history in the arts, the canyon is still a favorite of celebrated artists and writers and musicians, and it’s easy to see why. A stream threads down from the mountains, and secret stairways join the hillsides, offering views of the sea. Native oak and jacaranda and eucalyptus shade the winding lanes. Inevitably, the area inspires comparisons with the Amalfi coast. Monday evenings during summer, there are neighborhood picnics in nearby Rustic Canyon Park. Mornings, I walk my dogs along the bike path on the beach, heading south toward the Santa Monica pier or north toward Pacific Palisades with its dramatic backdrop of mountains. Most summer days I stroll down to swim in the ocean or to surf. Hiking trails are moments away. Idyllic as this setting is, wanderlust has set in and so I’ll be traveling intermittently during the next year.
