More About Guanajuato: Having traveled extensively in Mexico, Guanajuato is our favorite city, and high on our list of favorite cities worldwide. It is very European and exceptionally safe with lots of pedestrian only streets, parks, outdoor cafes, festivals, a major university, a symphony orchestra (admission $5 U.S.!), great art museums, night clubs, restaurants, monuments, etc. Ideally situated in the central highlands, Guanajuato is two hours from beautiful Spanish colonial cities of Queretaro or Zacatecas, and approximately four hours by bus to either Mexico City or Guadalajara. Guanajuato is built in a bowl in the mountains with steep streets and labyrinthine, colorful alleyways lacing the hill sides. GTO has exquisite architecture and a venerable history having been the richest city in Mexico for more than two centuries. Exploring the narrow, rambling alleys, or “callejones” as they are known, you will discover myriad hidden views across the city with it's classic Spanish colonial churches and brightly painted neighborhoods. One really unique aspect of GTO is that the city has been tunneled to direct traffic below ground leaving much of the historic downtown open to pedestrians. The residents of GTO are exceptionally friendly and most evenings are a buzz of people milling around the parks and cafes with mariachis and troubadours providing the soundtrack.
Unique attractions include the infamous Museo de las Momias (Mummy Museum), The Diego Rivera House, The Don Quixote Museum and numerous abandoned and working silver mines. Festivals and fiestas are a regular occurrence including the Day of Flowers, Semana Santa, and the acclaimed International Cervantino Arts Festival in October. GTO's climate is very consistent with warm, sunny days, and cool comfortable evenings. Occasionally breezy, cooler winter weather can drop daytime temperatures into the 60's, while summers range in the high 80's with frequent showers.

John and I stayed at Casa Isabel for a month and loved it! The house is very comfortable and the view fantastic. Plus we arrived for the full moon rising over the opposite hill, just beautiful. James was a great help at our arrival and departure, and provided lots of information about the town. Many thanks! One comment on the listing info: The lower level shower never got hot water, so we always used the shower off the kitchen. A trivial inconvenience. We were quite at ease in the neighborhood. Neighbors and children playing on the callejon were friendly, and we frequently came and went at night, with no problem or concern. And yes, it's a hike up from the center. We took it slow, stopped often to admire the view, and that's how we got to meet and chat with neighbors. I also highly recommend Escuela Mexicana for Spanish language classes. The instructors and classes were very good, and the field trips offered were great. These excursions went to some places we wouldn't have found on our own or with a commercial tour operator. We especially enjoyed visiting the orphanage at Salamanca. BUT visit Cristo Rey with Mexican tourists. Even if the guide only speaks Spanish (as did ours), you'll understand enough and you'll really see how important this monument is to Mexicans. Guanajuato is a wonderful city, and this house is a great place to stay for an extended visit. We spent a total of 10 weeks in Mexico in 2011 and felt safe and welcomed everywhere we went (Puerto Morelos, San Miguel d'Allende, and Guanajuato).

This house was perfect for our needs. It was very clean and nicely decorated, with AMAZING views. I lived in Guanajuato for a while, so I'm perfectly comfortable traveling there by myself and am accustomed to some of the downsides of the town. The less-seasoned travelers in our group were a little uncomfortable with the fact that the house looks out on some very third-world-ish houses, and walking up the callejon by yourself at night can be a little scary. Also, it is quite a hike up the callejon to the house. This isn't a criticim of the house itself, but I'm just being honest so travelers less comfortable in foreign lands know what to expect.

Hi Holly & Dan, Just wanted to let you know how much we enjoyed our stay at Casa Isabel. What a view! I don't think we would ever get tired of that. The house itself was great. We were there with our teenage daughter and she certainly enjoyed having the top floor as her bedroom. Great antique furniture and decorations. Our daughter loved the very artistic bathroom door. We witnessed a couple of major storms in the late evening which did not dampen our experience in any way - the thunder and lightning was a spectacular show. We were well-prepared for the daily trudge up the hill, which we usually did a couple of times a day as we would typically come back for a siesta/rest before heading back down for dinner and street activities. Realized just about everyone in Guanajuato lives on a hill somewhere. So everyone has to be in shape to some degree. Loved the town - full of life, always something going on. Just enjoyed hanging out, taking lots of pictures (not sure we can compete with Dan's photos, but the place is so photogenic). James was also very helpful with his directions and suggestions...our daughter also thought he was very cool! A fabulous experience all around!

We rented Casa Isabel for nearly the entire month of January, 2010. We fell in love with the home's location, amenities and style, and hope to return in the near future. I attended Spanish school with my two sons at Escuela Mexicana (a 4 minute walk away), and my husband shot photographs throughout the day. Everything was within walking distance, and the steep uphill climb on the way home kept us in great shape! The view out the patio was fabulous, and the house manager was always very helpful when we had questions or needed something special. We have been recommending this home to our friends, and honestly hope to return very soon.

This is a nice property for do it yourself-er types. (The basic necessities of living are provided - sheets, blankets, towels, plates, cookware, etc.) The house is nicely laid out on two floors - basically one large room with a bath room on each floor. The bottom floor is a bedroom and the top floor is livingroom, diningroom and kitchen combination. (The kitchen is not for gourmet cooks, but provides the minimum amenities - a microwave would be a nice addition.) The view is terrific from the upstairs and balcony, but marred slightly by some unsightly electric wires and a downright ugly electric pole. Nonetheless, it is still impressive and serves as the perfect backdrop for morning coffee or a quiet dinner at the casa. The owners have added several lovely artisian pieces and some nice photography (by one of the owners) to add to the charm. (I'm sure they will continue to add to their collection over time.) The owners, Dan and Holly, were really helpful in setting up arrival arrangements. This is a necessity if you haven't been to the house before as it very difficult to find (off a small road and across a walk way). Also, take to heart their advise about access. This house is not for the physically challenged or weak of heart. The walk up from town is quite steep, and then you have 72 steps (I counted) from the Callejon to the Casa's front door - this at over 6,000 foot elevation. (A tip - remember the backpackers method of walking up a hill - zig zag up the path rather than a straight a head assault. It makes a big difference.) Guanajauto is a beautiful and lovely colonial city filled with terrific parks and plazas. There is a bustling street life, and many wonderful restaurants, cafes and museums. This house is not in a "tourist" style neighborhood, although only a short (and steep) walk from the Historical District. So, you do get a flavor of what it would be like to live in this wonderful Mexican city. I would recommend this house for those that have no need to be pampered and are looking to get a flavor of Mexican living. Also, it should be noted that it is a terrific value for the price.
Owner response:Based on helpful suggestions we have added a microwave, good knife set, garlic press, etc. and complete set of stunning Mexican lead free dinnerware to the kitchen. We have also added a large trash can to the kitchen and roof top terrace. Next on the list..... a grill.

My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Casa Isabel - it was convenient to everything, including the town center, university and many other sights, coffee shops, restaurants and bars. The home looks over the town's magnificent colors and there is absolutely nothing better than enjoying a beverage of choice up on the rooftop terrace while watching the light of day fade away... We would return in a heartbeat, and cannot wait to schedule our next trip down to this beautiful city!
