Why the Owner Chose Monterey

The Berkshires remains one of the most stimulating, beautiful areas in the east. Near New York and Boston but far enough away as well. Skiing in the winter, fall leaves, lakes and hiking all year round. Home of Boston Symphony in the summer, Shakespeare and Co.,Jacobs Pillow Dance, you are in the midst of cultural events and beautiful rural New England.

Owner's Map of Monterey

Abbot Bronstein and Carol Ladewig We have been coming to the Berkshires for over 30 years. My parents bought this house as a retreat from New York on the weekend and summers. It is a serene setting in a small lovely town. Although we now live in the San Francisco Bay Area we return as often as possible to Monterey.

Perfect Romantic Weekend

My husband and I spent the long Columbus Day weekend at the house, and couldn't have asked for a more spectacular experience. We made breakfast and had coffee on the porch every morning and snuggled up and read by the beautiful fireplace every night. It was warm enough to kayak, so we took on Lake Garfield which is big enough to be fun for exploring but small enough that it's an easy trip the whole way across. The food in Great Barrington was EXCELLENT: we are still talking about the produce from Guido's, a candlelight dinner at Allium, and the dark chocolate ice cream at SoCo Creamery. The owners are LOVELY and accommodating, we slept well, love the art in the house, and would unhesitatingly recommend the property to anyone looking for a rejuvenating Berkshires getaway.

A magical property!

My family spent August in this exceptional home and are have already discussed going back next year. Built in the mid-1700's, the house has been renovated enough to be tremendously comfortable without losing any of its original farmhouse charm--in other words, the fantastic claw-footed tubs have plenty of hot running water! The property is beautiful with a large lawn my kids played on all month, and the house is located close to the charming Monterey library and the town's Lake Garfield beach (white sand, picnic tables and a lifeguard). The owners are tremendously kind and accommodating and the local caretaker addressed all of our questions immediately. We couldn't have asked for a better rental experience and highly recommend the house!

Lovely Home!

We rented this property in late August last year, and hope to do the same this year. We absolutely loved it! A spacious, airy, clean house with a real sense of history, it really exceeded our expectations. Loved the charm of the old property. The sprawling yard was great for reading or napping in the late afternoon, and a fire in the fireplace in the evening was so cozy in the cool evening air. We rented this place as a family of 3, though there was plenty of room for more. The Garfield Lake beach was a 3 minute drive away and was the perfect spot to cool off and for our young son to play in the sand. Tons of great restaurants and shopping in the surrounding areas (Lenox, Great Barrington).

My husband, daughter and I spent a lovely October weekend on Hunger Road this year. It was so lovely, in fact, that we returned for New Year's Eve. The house is charming, spacious and cozy, with just the right amount of modern amenities, without too many, so you really feel like you are retreating to the woods. On our two visits we were able to take advantage of the nearby Appalachian Trail, the great General Store in Monterey, cross-country skiing in Beartown State Forest, a great day trip to MassMoca, strolls (and great coffeeshops!) in Great Barrington, and to spend lots of wonderful time in front of the fireplace at the house. The property is beautiful, with lots of places for exploring and just taking in the woods. Enjoy!

A beautiful old house -- secluded, private, quiet, peaceful, with spectacular garden, lawn and woodlands. It is comfortable, roomy, light and has a warm and welcoming feeling; it is quite close to the lake, and there is a beautiful walk starting right out the front door. Highly recommended.
