Location: Monterey, Berkshires, Massachusetts, USA (1.5 Miles from Monterey Town, 1/2 Mile from Lake Garfield)

Accommodations:  House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths (Sleeps 4-6)

This pre-revolutionary war house was built in 1739. With its 15 plus acres of land, with 2 acres of clear lawn, and hundreds of acres of woods surrounding, it is a private, quiet retreat.

The house is a half mile from a beautiful lake (Lake Garfield), with swimming, canoeing, kayaking and fishing.

The house has 3 large working fireplaces, 2 full updated bathrooms with large claw foot tubs. All the bedrooms are air conditioned and all rooms have screened in windows.

There is a large dinning room for meals, two small office/studies and two living room sitting areas. The kitchen has a new stove and microwave and toaster oven.

The solarium off the kitchen is perfect for eating and watching the birds, wild turkeys, deer and trees. Surrounded by sugar maples, birch, pine and beech, the fall leaves are also spectacular.

The house is a perfect retreat, near all the activities in the Berkshires. Less then 3 hours from New York and 2 hours from Boston, it is very accessible.

The two French doors open onto the large stone patio overlooking the back yard.

There are walking trails, biking, museums, theater, music and dance within 15 minutes, as well as wonderful restaurants, galleries and antiques.

It is a very old house with the charming oddities of very old new England houses, but a wonderful place to relax.

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 1969

Abbot Bronstein and Carol Ladewig We have been coming to the Berkshires for over 30 years. My parents bought this house as a retreat from New York on the weekend and summers. It is a serene setting in a small lovely town. Although we now live in the San Francisco Bay Area we return as often as possible to Monterey.

Why the Owner Chose Monterey

The Berkshires remains one of the most stimulating, beautiful areas in the east. Near New York and Boston but far enough away as well.

    • A beautiful old house -- secluded, private, quiet, peaceful, with spectacular garden, lawn and woodlands. It is comfortable, roomy, light and has a warm and welcoming feeling; it is quite close to the lake, and there is a beautiful walk starting right out the front door. Highly recommended.
