  The location is perfect for exploring both Lucca and the surrounding area. Don't worry about the stairs, really no big deal. Lots of space. Luigi and Silvana were great. We had to park in a lot, just near the wall, as the permit to get into the City was not easily available. It seemed like it would be impossible to connect with people we had never met and we speak no Italian at a parking lot. But it worked, and very easily. They provided a map and noted things we might like to see. A baby bed wasn't available, but we put a bed on the floor to make it work. The staff that we emailed with to set up the rental were fabulous. Thank you! Christine and family (two adults, and two children ages 4 and almost 2). We stayed in the end of May 2011.

  Recommended for: Sightseeing, tourists without a car, families with young children, adventure seekers, age 55+, families with teenagers.

  We loved staying in Corte Fatinelli ! Luigi and Silvana went out of their way to make our stay and departure as smooth as possible. Yes, there are stairs to negotiate but they are typical of most lodging in Italy. We enjoyed the quite yet very convenient location. The apartment was spacious with plenty of open space for hanging out without feeling like you are bumping into each other. We were two friends who wanted our own rooms and bathrooms. I loved the loft bedroom with it's own bathroom. The first and second bedroom share a hallway bathroom. However, the bed/bath setup would easily accommodate a large family or group. You certainly don't need a car from this location. Lucca was a friendly city, we walked everywhere. The train/bus station was close; we easily took a day trip up to Cinque terre. We would recommend Lucca as a stop and staying in Corte Fatinellie on your Italian vacation.

• Lucca and Rome

  We are a family of four and we stayed at Corte Fatinelli in Lucca for one week and then the Moka apartment in Rome for one week. Andrea and Marco were wonderful hosts - welcoming and helpful with all of our needs. We really appreciated how easy it was to work with them and to line up both apartments at once. Both apartments were spacious and wonderfully located. Neither apartment has AC and we were in Italy during a heat wave, so we would recommend avoiding the hot months if that would be a problem for you. We will definitely work with Andrea and Marco again when we return to Italy - hopefully in the near future!

  My brother, sister-in-law and I stayed in Corte Fatinelli and were very pleased with its location and the security of the car in a private lot. Driving in Lucca is not for the faint of heart, with tourists and bicyclists and some cars and buses coming in every direction. So we left the car parked safely and walked or took the train or bus. The apartment was wonderful, the 51 steps a bit challenging after touring all day, but the views were well worth it. Luigi and Silvana were very helpful and even locals on the street when your maps and the street names didn't match. Luigi's history on the apartment was very interesting and made us feel special. We did go to the church where Santa Zita is mummified. We enjoyed our stay and the accommodations.

  The apartment is centrally located, off of a quiet street within a few blocks of many shops, restaurants, markets and Lucca's beautiful wall. VERY quiet at night, so you will sleep well! Kitchen is well equipped, and beds are comfortable. The 50 steps up to the apartment may be challenging for some, but my 89-year old mother handled them fine, sometimes twice a day. Luigi and Sylvana took excellent care of us, recommending several restaurants (Angelo's - molto bene!) and many sites. Lucca is a special place and the Luchese are very friendly, altho it helps to know a little Italian! We took the train everywhere--I would recommend this over trying to drive inside the walls of Lucca. With all the tourists and bicylists, cars have quite a difficult time navigating the streets. Another great thing about Lucca--no motorinis or vespas inside the walls, which are a plague in many Italian cities. Buono viaggio!
