Location: Governor's Harbour, Eleuthera, Bahamas, Caribbean
Accommodations: House, 3 Bedrooms, 3 Baths (Sleeps 6)
Enter our spacious waterfront home and be greeted with a spectacular view. The glass walled 35' great room with vaulted cedar ceiling opens to a huge deck. The deck is part sun/part shade and sits high above the water overlooking a deserted island. The sunsets are an event, whether you are sitting in a chair, lying in the hammock, or on the waterfront. You might see the green flash.
The teak dining table seats eight comfortably. The living area seats nine. Local art decorates the walls. The overall impression is one of space, peace, and primary colors. The master bedroom suite features magnificent views. The house is situated on two fenced private acres with fruit trees.
Guests are invited to enjoy the oranges, limes and mangoes when in season. World famous Club Med Beach is a mile away; as is Governor's Harbour with it's charming Victorian houses, varied restaurants, library and movie theater.
Enjoy swimming, snorkeling, diving, and fishing just a short walk down the hill to the ocean -- where the depth is ten to 12 feet. The ocean is your pool. Swim ladders give you easy access in and out. There is a large waterfront sun deck on the coral for sun worshippers. You can have a fishing guide pick you up at your own boat dock.
Or you can bring your own boat and tie up to the dock which has 3 pilings against the coral and 2 pilings about 16 feet out for spring lines. There are two outside showers. Eleuthera is approximately 100 miles long, so there is lots to see including dozens of deserted beaches.
Lighthouse Beach has been included on one of the lists of the ten best beaches. Beachcombing everywhere is the best! The busy communities of Spanish Wells and Harbour Island are a fun day trip, including a water taxi ride. The Bahamians are very welcoming.
We leave maps at the house showing you where good snorkeling and shelling beaches are. They are also annotated with the locations of restaurants. There is a sizable natural history library including books on fish, shells, birds, butterflies and moths.
'In entering this house you do possess it. Peace and heart's greeting' This was a saying over the mantle at my Aunt's beach house on Cape Cod. I loved going there. We enjoyed the house. We used it. We respected it. I hope you will treat my house as you would that of your favorite aunt. Enjoy it, use it, respect it.
The active music scene in governor's Harbour can keep you busy. Tippy's has piano music with whoever wants to join in on Fridays. Saturday there is a rake and scrape band. The Buccaneer club has music one night a week. Tappas has a band on Thursday night and a classical guitarist on Sunday afternoon.
The Friday night fish fry has a DJ and dancing in the street. Actually, feel free to dance at any of these places. And Elvina's in Gregory Town has music and dancing on Tuesday and Friday nights. There are also special events throughout the year; homecoming, charity functions, you never know. Just keep an eye on the bulletin boards at the markets.
Snorkeling is fantastic. I leave maps available at the house showing where good snorkeling beaches are. Actually you can go just about anywhere. There is always something interesting to see. And after you have seen it and are wondering what it might be you can come home to look it up in one of the books that we have on fish, sea creatures, shells or corals.
You can try fishing off the dock or you can have a fishing guide take you out in a boat. We see bone fisherman wading about in the shallows. They flycast for the elusive bonefish.
Tucking up in a hammock or beach chair with a good book is one of life's great pleasures. We have a large assortment of books here. Or you can go to the Haynes Library to check out their selection. It is worth a visit in any case. Beachwalking, beachcombing is a favorite activity. Good shelling beaches are indicated on those maps.
And when you come home with those shells there are books to look them up in. I also like visiting the settlements with my camera. You might like pictures of buildings or ruins or plants. I like taking pictures of ordinary daily activities; the wash hanging on a line, someone cleaning fish or cutting hair. Life is simpler here-more like what it was like in the US in the '50's.
Again we have books to help you identify them. Our most unusual sighting was of a snowy owl which flew out of a cave when we disturbed it. Just the other day I heard an owl early in the morning. Just one morning.
Never heard him again nor did I see him. We regularly have osprey flying by, sometimes carrying a fish back to it's nest. You might see frigate birds or a pelican (infrequent here). There are humming birds, vireols, bananaquits and other pretty little flying birds. Lately we've had a snowy egret stalking around the garden.
One of my favorites is the prehistoric limpkin. Bats. There are no longer bats in the caves at Hatchet Bay or at Rock Sound. But if you are adventurous you can seek out the Ten Bay caves which still have 2 types of bats.
In any case, the caves at Hatchet Bay are great fun. Don't forget the flashlights. There is also a book on butterflies and moths.
