Winter Harbor is a quaint working fishing community and summer playground.

Cheerful, comfortable, close, convenient…all describe our home nestled in this quaint fishing village where one can enjoy what Maine has to offer and then return to a quiet home where only Maine’s birds or a harbor’s foghorn can be heard so one can relax, reflect and rest up for a new day of adventures.

There are 3 bedrooms, all eclectically decorated with Maine themes, country quilts, artwork, antiques to provide that pleasurable “visiting grandma’s” venue yet still incorporating today’s amenities of a newly updated galley kitchen complete with local Deer Isle granite countertops with bar seating, microwave, refrigerator, ceramic cook-top, coffee maker, toaster/oven/broiler, pots, pans, china, silverware, washer/dryer. Our open concept dining/living room features TV w/DVD & VCR player, movie library, radio/CD player, and wireless internet. Bed linens, towels, paper products are provided. There are 2 full bathrooms, one newly finished with stall shower and pedestal sink. On our back porch one can enjoy having a private moment with morning coffee and a book or having a BBQ or lobster on our outdoor grill. There is an awesome playground across from our home that our young visitors would certainly enjoy and parents can view easily. We are on the end of a dead-end street so traffic is very limited. We also have some board games, and outdoor toys for those who would like to partake. We have several bikes in our garage for you use and pleasure. Kayaks can be rented easily from locations mentioned in our “Welcome to our Home” book as well as other attractions, ferry & bus schedules, shops, hikes and of course the magnificent Acadia National Park’s Schoodic Peninsula whose entrance is a mile from our house where sightseeing, hiking, biking, picnicking are all there for your enjoyment. A free excursion bus sponsored by LLBean picks up passengers at the end of our road at Rte. 186 to take folks around Winter Harbor and Schoodic Peninsula throughout the day during the summer season allowing passengers to get off the bus at a spot and be picked up later on another bus run. We are a few minutes’ walk to the ocean, restaurants, grocery store, lobster pounds, post office, public library, historic society museum, artists’ studios, bank, farmers’ market, a unique 5&10 cent store, ice cream parlor, antique and handmade artisan crafts shops. The nearby Bar Harbor Ferry on Sargent St. can take you over to Bar Harbor which serves as a leisurely transportation vehicle as well as a sight-seeing boat ride on one of the prettiest bays in Maine. There is also a public boat launch, golf course, and our historic Hammond Hall where many varied, live entertainment performances are held throughout the year—all just moments away from our door step!

Swimming is available off the rocky shores or one can seek enjoyment at Jones and Flanders Ponds with their sandy beaches and fresh waters which are just a short distance away where one can do some boating or fishing as well. Also, the area has vineyards hosting tours and tastings, historic buildings, unique shops, a variety of eateries, other quaint fishing villages, art galleries, antique shops, hiking trails, educational science and environmental centers, and more of Maine’s beautiful coastline, mountains and lakes…all beckoning folks to come and explore.

The house was clean and in good order. However, there was no oven. I don't think as well that we were notified of that. It doesn't seem like a good fit for people who want to cook while they are staying there. The VCR/DVD player was also not working and we could not locate anything that would help us in figuring that out. Other than that it was a good place to stay if you just needed a nice place to sleep :)

Owner response: We’re happy that our home was found comfortable and clean since we take great pride in keeping it that way. Many of our renters never used the original large oven, so we opted to install a new ceramic cook-top instead during our recent renovations. After seeing this review, we have also added a new countertop oven and broiler as well. The town’s Laundromat closed last year so we included a full sized washer and dryer during our renovations. We have looked into the VCR/DVD problem and determined that it just needed to be reset due to a power failure. Instruction manuals have always been kept in the cabinet under the TV and VCR/DVD player, alongside all the DVD’s and tapes for our guests.

Bob- Just digging out from the laundry pile to thank you for letting us use your place in Winter Harbor. We had a wonderful time exploring the area! Highlights were eagle watching, sea glass collecting, rock hopping, rope swinging, the farmers market, ice cream at Gerrish's, the 5&10, watching the tides, and jogging all over the schoodic peninsula. The location was perfect and you guys have a wonderful reputation in the community. Thanks so much for a great family vacation for my husband, myself, my children (10 & 8), and Grandpa!

I had the opportunity to stay at this location for the week of the 15h of August. My family had a great time there. the place was well maintained and very cozy. The location of the house was within the center of town, which made it easy for us to go on excursions. I would definitely recommend this home to my friends if they plan on going to Maine for vacation.

A number of things make this place stand out from other facilities. The place was in top condition when we arrived. The house was very tastefully decorated and we felt at home right from the beginning. Everything was meticulously planned and the supplies were stacked exactly where we expected them. The neighborhood was really nice, surrounded by residents...so we did not feel that we have come to a commercial establishment. We chatted up with a few neighbors and they were nice and friendly. The neat playground right outside the house was a big plus...our kids loved to play in them while we prepared for our daily outings. Initially we thought that its distance from Bar Harbor will be inconvenient. To our surprise, once we visited the Schoodic Point (the other part of Acadia near Winter Harbor) and enjoyed the big waves hitting the rocky coastline, our family preferred to spend more time there than going to the commercial setups in the main park. We enjoyed our time thoroughly and will recommend anyone to take advantage of this very reasonably priced facility.

This property is perfect for anyone who wants to be close to the most beautiful spot on the MAINEland-Schoodic Point and all it has to offer-it is a distance to Bar Harbor and Mt Desert but well worth it-the townhouse is spacious and has a large well equipped kitchen-it is in a year round neighborhood so it feels like "home" away from home rather than being in a "tourist" location. Good for families, over 55 or anyone who wants a good vacation rental for a very reasonable amount of money-the owners are wonderful to work with and are very accepting of any suggestions you may have to making the rental better for future renters. We would definitely return.

We rented this property for a weekend in August. When we arrived, it felt like we were at a friend's home! It was clean and very comfortable. There was a guide to the area with a local paper that listed events and happenings in the area. You can walk to the Five and Dime, a grocery store and other quaint shops. There were bicycles for our use and we were across from a playground, so this property is perfect for families. I would stay here again, but for at least a week! There is a section of Acadia National Park that is a few minutes drive away. Absolutely breath taking views!!! Two thumbs up!!!

Owner response: We try to help our renters find and enjoy many of the same reasons our family has enjoyed this little "home away from home". There are so many things to do and one can find both peace and quiet as well as many fun filled family activities within a short distance away!

                      Owner info

                      Year Purchased: 2005

About the owner: My wife retired as a substitute teacher and I'm retired from IBM after 34 years. We've enjoyed our yearly vacations in this area since 1991 because of the beautiful views, warm people and the slower pace of life.

Why the Owner Chose Winter Harbor:
Our family has been coming to Winter Harbor since 1991 when we had an opportunity to rent a vacation home from one of our friends which was located on the water facing Mount Desert Island across from Frenchman’s Bay. We stayed for a week and had one of the nicest, most relaxing, vacations we’ve had, with a view that was breathtaking. Since then we came each year for the next 13 years and stayed at the same location. We got to know the area pretty well and became friends with some of the local townspeople, all of whom were very friendly, helpful and genuine. Our kids began referring to our stays as “going to our Maine house”. In 2004, our friends decided to retire and planned to use the house in Maine. Needless to say, we were very disappointed, thinking that could have been our last year staying in an area we have come to love. About the same time, the Navy left a local base and the town picked up all their housing properties and began selling them. That's when we decided to purchase one for our own. This turned out to be one of our best decisions.
