Owner's Profile
Owner Description
Year Purchased: 2006
I live in NYC and love to retreat upstate to the Hudson Valley. It is a beautiful area, and the perfect distance to make weekend getaways from the busy city.
Why the Owner Chose Hudson
The Hudson Valley is simply spectacular. Close to NYC, but scenic and rural, the towns in the area all have their own unique charm, which allows an escape from the large, chains stores that are now ubiquitous, even in NYC. It is one of my favorite areas to explore and relax.
The Unique Benefits of this House
The house is located about 5 minutes from Lake Taghkanic state park, which has three beaches (one with a concession stand) and great hiking trails, one of which circles the lake for about six miles. Boating and kayaking can be done on the lake.
15 minutes from the house is the city of Hudson, which has dozens of antique shops, a couple of bookstores, art galleries, cafes & restaurants, etc., and a couple of movie theatres. Warren street is the highlight.
Also about 15 minutes away is Frederic Church's estate, which has beautiful views of the Hudson and the Catskills, gardens, and a museum of his home.
Also about 15 minutes away in Ghent, NY, is the Fields Sculpture Park at the OMI International Arts Center with internationally recognized contemporary sculpture located over 100 acres of farmland.
About 20-25 minutes away are Red Hook and Tivoli, which both have local shops and restaurants, and are close to Bard College, where the Fisher Performing Arts Center is located. 25 minutes away is Rhinebeck (5 minutes passed Red Hook on Route 9), which has excellent restaurants, shops, a farmer's market on Saturdays, as well as local artists, and an art house movie theatre.
Directly across the river are Catskill, and the Catskill mountains with incredible hiking trails, and Woodstock.
If you like classical music, Tanglewood, the summer venue for the Boston Symphony Orchestra is about 40 miles away. It is a favorite for the cheap lawn tickets to outdoor concerts on summer nights. Well worth the drive.

When we first pulled onto Sugar Mountain Road after winding our way through the hilly terrain of the Hudson Valley, we were all excited about the house nestled on the ridge. We were first graced with the beautiful view through the large west facing windows. The kitchen handled our party of seven with everyone wanting to cook. The sunsets were amazing to watch from the worn leather couch. Even the little ridge at the back of the house running up the rocky hillside with its variety of mosses and lichens provided a brief jaunt into the woods. The beds were comfy and everyone had a wonderul weekend. We all discussed returning again for the spring.

Awesome in every way! My family (9 adults & 2 babies) enjoyed an incredible 2011 Christmas holiday week in this beautiful Sugar Mountain home. Great mountain-top vacation home - clean, fully equipped, cozy, comfortable, plenty of beds and family space, gorgeous views, great hiking trails nearby, only 15/20 minutes from small town of Hudson (an historic Hudson River town) with lots of really cool restaurants and shops and friendly locals. I highly recommend this vacation home for anyone looking to get away from the rat race in search of the peace and tranquility of this special place. You will not be disappointed!

A group of knitters (and a couple who don't hold needles) used this as home base while we attended the New York Sheep and Wool Festival in Rhinebeck. It was a perfect place to relax, cook, share stories, and knit after demanding days at the fairgrounds. While the location is a bit distant--and quite rural--from Rhinebeck, all of us appreciated the quiet surroundings, easy atmosphere, and general comfort. The rain precluded deck use so we're all anticipating a return and have fingers crossed for stargazing and grilled supper.

My boyfriend and I spent the weekend here recently. It was wonderful. We are already searching our schedules because we are so eager to go back. The house was immaculate and easy to manage. The owner has anticipated every question you can possibly have, but she is also super accessible if you have questions. We found the house to be inviting and safe. We enjoyed day trips to the nearby towns like rhinebeck and Hyde park. It is a totally doable trip if you are looking for an easy weekend getaway. Really wonderful. Thanks again to the owners for the chance to stay there. Highly recommended.

I have to second all of that! It is a truly wonderful house and the views are beyond stunning. I particularly like the way the mirrorball catches the early afternoon sun.

Your house was wonderful for us during our week in NY. All our family had a great time and your home was perfect. [My wife] kept singing the praises of your kitchen! Thanks again for letting us stay there.
