Warbler House is unique. My wife and I are artists. We designed and built our home to be a sustainable refuge both for us and for the wildlife that has lived here before us. We frequently see deer, javelina, bobcats, hawks, and occasionally even a mountain lion. We rejoice in the wild nature of this special place. Perhaps you will too.
Warbler House is an experience. Years of thought and effort have made this a comfortable and elegant refuge in which to experience what a home was for ten thousand years before building became an “industry”. Warbler House is constructed of site-excavated granite using a stone building technique perfected by the Romans 2000 years ago. It is aligned to Polaris, the North Star. It is heated by the sun and cooled by the prevailing winds. It harvests the precious rain. All of this was known and practiced by our ancestors. Cheap energy made us forget.
Our retreat is located off the beaten path in a rural, historic and wild area. The last 3/4 mile is on a single-lane dirt road and driveway that is bumpy if you are used to just driving on pavement. It serves to keep out all but those who belong here. If you drive a car that is low and heavy, consider coming in something with more ground clearance. We drive a Subaru Outback year-round. The home is cut into the side of the granite plateau that slopes down to the old territorial stage route that ran along Mint Wash. It's three level interior and outside patios step down and match the hillside. If steps are a problem for you, consider that you may be happier in a flatter terrain.
It’s extraordinarily quiet here. We’re 18 miles north of Prescott (25 minutes from town) in the pinon/ juniper forest where the Williamson Valley plateau breaks away to Mint Wash. Our home is a sanctuary for sacred art from around the world. It is integrated seamlessly into its environment. It is “sustainable” because nature sustains it. It is genuine.
If this description speaks to you, if you remember seeing the Milky Way free of city lights, if you are open to an extraordinary experience, come and join us. We live in the caretaker’s cottage, below, by the pond.

Sustainable Arizona Mountain Retreat

The Unique Benefits at this House
Rafa designed and built a small cottage using the same principles of design as the main house. This allowed he and his wife to live on the property and manage the project while they assessed which passive solar strategies worked. While small, the 24 foot by 24 foot “Caretakers Cottage” proved to be an elegant and efficient use of space and energy. Built overlooking the pond, it has provided countless opportunities to enjoy the wildlife that continually drink from the oasis.
