What to do on an island?: -- The wonders of Acadia National Park are 20 minutes away, on Mt. Desert Island. Take an early mailboat and spend the day hiking or biking or horseback riding, or just drive up Cadillac Mountain, take in the view, and then have popovers and lemonade at Jordan Pond House.
-- Numerous small museums and galleries dot Mt. Desert, as do various gardens open to visitors.
-- If you must, go to Bar Harbor and buy fudge and t-shirts. You'll be delighted that you can take the 6 pm boat back to the idyllic Islesford.
-- If antiques and/or rummage sales are your thing, there's plenty of opportunity on Mt. Desert and on the mainland.
-- Spend the day kayaking around Little Cranberry or kayak over to Great Cranberry for lunch. (Rent kayaks at Joy of Kayaking -- Joy is the post mistress on the island.)
-- Walk around the island, collecting rocks and shells and amazing views along the way. Don't forget a snack.
-- Walk out to Bakers Island on the sandbar.

My fiance and I spent a short week at this beautiful house in September and I can tell you we could have spent a life time! From the more than comfortable house, to the friendly people on and off the island, to the remarkable scenery and hiking, it made for a perfect vacation. We will be back.

We have stayed at this great house for 2 years. It's a perfect place for a quiet family getaway. Or I bet it would also be fun for two families to stay. The porches are really nice place to grab a book & read the day away. Or it's a close walk to the awesome beaches & cute shops. I would highly recommend this house! Our last two vacations on Little Cranberry have been perfect & we wouldn't want to stay any other place. -Erika, Jason, Elliot, Azalea

We enjoy our gateway a lot. We stayed 3 nights with our 2 children. The house is just across the school park and the only grocery store of the island which is just perfect to be in the hart of the animations ! We found a lot of see glass and nice stone on the beach and were very refresh after our trip Everything was just perfect !

My wife and I had a wonderful time staying on Little Cranberry in your "old farmhouse". It brought us back to a simpler time and rejuvenated our spirits. Your house was perfect for our stay and being a short walk to the dock made it even better. Sitting in the kitchen with the window open and not hearing a sound was remarkable. I must mention that Kyle(and all the people we met) were as friendly and hospitable as anywhere we've been. We are already talking about a return trip!! Thanks again

I just returned from a wonderful week in Islesford. The house was lovely, full of light, charming, very comfortable and well-equipped. The island is friendly and full of beautiful walks and the house is close to the beach in all directions. We also enjoyed talking with residents about the island's history. It was the best of all possibilities since you can experience the relaxation of being on the island in a beautiful home while having the access to all there is to explore in Acadia National Park. It's easy to get used to island life though and we found it hard to leave after a week. Can't wait to return.

This lovely turn-of -the-century farmhouse is the quintessential Victorian charmer. Add to that the fact that it is on a tiny beautiful island off the coast of Maine, but still easily accessible by ferry to the great hiking and biking trails of the Mt. Desert Island and Accadian National Park and you have a blue-ribbon winner. Nearby Northeast and Souhwest harbor are also well-worth visiting. The roomy, light house has wrap-around porches--an open air one for those lazy afternoons of reading, and a screened porch where it's great to have drinks or dinner. The decor is bright and cheery and this place is altogether a delight. Phoebe happy Islesford visitor

My fiance and I were looking for a place to vacation on the coast of Maine. We read in a recent Travel + Leisure magazine that Little Cranberry Island was a top pick. Booking this house was very easy and Josephine is very professional and friendly. Everyone we met on the island was so friendly. We found a lot of sea glass and sand dollars. We walked along the shores for hours each day. The house looks just as clean as the pictures show it is. The house felt like a home! We plan on visiting the island again and will definitely stay at this house again.

My first trip to Islesford on Little Cranberry Island will not be my last. My family and I simply had the best, most relaxing vacation ever! Five of us, and our dog, made the trip to the island. (My parents, who are in their 70's, also stayed until mid-week with us.) Our kids are 9, 13 and 14. Each had a great time. We allowed them to bike and walk the island without us....and they loved it! We didn't turn on the television once to watch a movie. Instead, we spent our time collecting sea glass and shells, reading, talking and playing basketball across the street at the schoolhouse -- and perusing the internet. By Tuesday, my children asked if we could come back next year. I didn't miss the ocean views from the house because the house is situated directly across from the general store. When we were "home," we sat on the porch and watched the view of the little world of Islesford going by. The house is appointed with absolutely everything you will need to make the stay enjoyable and confortable. The mix of antiques and Swedish country furnishings is perfect! The featherbeds were a real treat to sink into during the cool evenings! The kitchen has all you need to cook (and calling for a delivery of groceries from Northeast Harbor is simple as can be). Dave Thomas delivered freshly-caught lobsters to our door three times during the week -- and that took a simple phone call, too. We ate breakfast and lunch at the general store several times and chatted with the locals, who are just terrific folks! But back to the extremely clean house....this place is suitable for all ages, though the elderly and extremely young will want to be careful on the staircase, it's steep, but you'll be used to it in no time. I've taken lots of vacations, but this was my most favorite. I wished by the week's end that I owned a house on the island. LeAnn

My wife and our 3 children (ages 16-24) stayed here in early July and had a wonderful time. It's a grand old house, roomy and quirky and fun, in the center of a small, friendly island. We enjoyed the adventure of staying on an island, but were surprised, by week's end, by the number of locals we had gotten to know. The house is well appointed with comfortable beds and a nice high-ceiling kitchen with modern appliances. It has any number of places to put your feet up and read a book or snooze. (The house has an amazing collection of older books). There is WiFi and a flat-screen TV with a video collection (but no TV service). The ocean is a 10 minute walk in any number of directions from the house. A small general store/post office is right near by. Keep in mind Little Cranberry Island is not a fancy resort, but a rustic, real Maine island. And the beaches aren't the best for swimming (although there is one somewhat sandy beach); they are more for collecting shells, sea glass, driftwood, ocean-smoothed stones and exploring -- and for catching beautiful sunrises and sunsets. But we enjoyed it all. There is one very good restaurant (a bit pricey) where Martha Stewart is said to occasionally pull her boat up to have supper. Twice during the week we took the mailboat (a 25-minute ride) back to Mount Desert Island to explore Acadia National Park, which has an excellent and free bus system that extends to both harbors served by the Cranberry mailboat/ferry -- so you don't need a car to explore Acadia.

Recommended for: Romantic getaway, tourists without a car, age 55+, families with young children, sightseeing, adventure seekers, families with teenagers, girls getaway.
