Location: Cimarron, Southwest, Colorado, USA (Located 35 miles SE of Montrose, CO or 30 miles E of Ridgway)

Accommodations:  Cabin, 1 Bedroom + Loft, 1 Bath (Sleeps 3-4)

Come to the beautiful, peaceful, Big Cimarron Valley in the San Juan Mountains and the Uncompahgre National Forest and Wilderness area with numerous readily accessible outdoor activities. Three different wilderness trailheads, perfect for a day-hike or overnighters, within 7 and 15 miles plus the beautiful Silverjack Reservoir (hand propelled boats only) within 6 miles and the Big Cimarron River for wonderful fishing and miles of mountain roads with spectacular scenery. This particular valley is hard to beat, even in Colorado, for recreation combined with peace, quiet and striking beauty, and there are fewer cabins here than in other areas.

The intent of this cabin is to get away from it all. Our 900 sq. foot cabin is clean and comfortable but not fancy. Do all your grocery shopping in Montrose and come to the cabin to relax, hike and play.

The cabin is located just 35 miles from the town of Montrose, 22 miles on highway 50 and then 13 miles on the Big Cimarron Rd. (county rd. 858). Big Cimarron Rd. continues past the cabin into the National Forest (2 miles past) and by numerous wilderness trialheads, over Owl Creek Pass to the town of Ridgeway. Another 10 miles of pavement from there is the charming town of Ouray and their famous hot springs pool. Owl Creek Pass is consistently rated as one of the very prettiest drives in the entire state of Colorado (closed in winter except to Snowmobiles). Other nearby attractions are the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park (about 25 miles away, between the cabin and Montrose) and the Blue Mesa Reservoir which is a large body of water known for large lake trout.

Winter is the only time of year you will need to have a four wheel drive vehicle to access the cabin or at minimum an all wheel drive vehicle, but winter is our personal favorite time to be there. During all seasons some of the roads to the wilderness trailheads require a vehicle with some clearance although with the exception of the West Fork trail head a four wheel drive is not required. The road to the cabin is a well maintained county road. During the winter the road closes just two miles past the cabin where it is then groomed for snowmobilers and those who venture into the forest on foot or ski. It's a wonderful, quiet playground.

  • The cabin made my hunting vacation very enjoyable for myself and my family. Besides spending my days in the national forest hiking and viewing wildlife, just a few miles from the cabin, we also spent time relaxing and admiring the views from the cabin. What a great location to have a cabin. I look forward to staying there again!

  • We LOVED our stay at this cabin! It was everything that we had wished for in a "Colorado getaway". The very first morning I strolled out back to take a photo of the Aspen grove, I surprised 9 deer eating their breakfast! The cabin looks out onto a fabulous canyon, and we almost couldn't tear ourselves away from the view to go exploring. Once we did though, we fell more and more in love with the area, which boasts Silver Jack Reservoir, mountain streams, hiking trails, Owl Creek Pass, and the valley where they filmed "True Grit!" At night from the deck the stars are so close that I got my first good look at the Milky Way. The owners have done everything possible to ensure that you won't lack for any amenity, and there's even an Aspen sapling branch strung with little white lights in the living area! This would be the perfect place for a couple or small family looking to get away and back to nature. We definitely plan to return!!

  • We spent our family summer vacation here in August and it was fantastic! Nice and quiet with spectacular views of the San Juan Mountains off of the deck or from the living room. It was great to just sit and read and have a drink and look at the mountains. It was also a ton of fun to head down the road a couple of miles to kayak and fish at Silverjack Reservoir (limited out in about two hours). There are also some really pretty hikes in the area. It is also a fairly easy drive through the mountains to get to the Ridgeway/Ouray area. Made a day of a drive to the hot springs pool in Ouray, dinner at the True Grit café in Ridgeway and then back to the cabin for a camp fire and smores. And then just down the road by Montrose is the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. A beautiful and fairly unknown National Park. This is a perfectly located, affordable retreat that I highly recommend. It is far enough away from the large touristy areas to create the privacy we desired and also close enough to those areas to allow easily access to them.
