Location: Cimarron, Southwest, Colorado, USA (Located 35 miles SE of Montrose, CO or 30 miles E of Ridgway)

Accommodations:  Cabin, 1 Bedroom + Loft, 1 Bath (Sleeps 4)

Keywords:  Cabin in the San Juan Mountains

Come to the beautiful, peaceful, Big Cimarron Valley in the San Juan Mountains and the Uncompahgre National Forest and Wilderness area with numerous readily accessible outdoor activities. Three different wilderness trailheads, perfect for a day-hike or overnighters, within 7 and 15 miles plus the beautiful Silverjack Reservoir (hand propelled boats only) within 6 miles and the Big Cimarron River for wonderful fishing and miles of mountain roads with spectacular scenery. This particular valley is hard to beat, even in Colorado, for recreation combined with peace, quiet and striking beauty, and there are far fewer cabins here than in other areas. This valley offers unique recreation and beauty not found in other nearby valleys. There are more photos of this valley by clicking on the associated link below, just above the "Owner's Profile".

The intent of this cabin is to get away from it all. Our 900 sq. foot cabin is clean and comfortable but not fancy. Do all your grocery shopping in Montrose and come to the cabin to relax, hike and play. Every season offers something unique and beautiful.

Late spring and summer are best for hiking and kayaking. During late summer and the fall they lower the reservoir, so it's hard to kayak but there is still tremendous hiking opportunities along with beautiful drives for enjoying the turning leafs. Winter is excellent for cross-country skiing, snowshoeing or simply hunkering in by a crackling fire for a big storm!

The cabin is located just 35 miles from the town of Montrose, 22 miles on highway 50 and then 13 miles on the Big Cimarron Rd. (county rd. 858). Big Cimarron Rd. continues past the cabin into the National Forest (border is 2 miles past) and by numerous wilderness trialheads. The road continues over Owl Creek Pass to the town of Ridgeway, about 27 miles from our cabin. Another 10 miles of pavement from there is the charming town of Ouray and their famous hot springs pool. Owl Creek Pass has been rated as one of the very prettiest drives in the entire state of Colorado. This road closes two miles past our cabin around November 1 due to snow and remains snow locked all winter except to Snowmobiles and foot or ski until about mid May. The road is, however, groomed all winter for great and very secluded cross-country skiing.

Other nearby attractions are the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park (about 25 miles away, between the cabin and Montrose) and the Blue Mesa Reservoir which is a large body of water known for large lake trout. The ski town of Crested Butte is about 75 miles away. The ski town of Telluride is about 60 miles away when Owl Creek Pass is open (late spring through late fall) and about 95 miles during the winter.

During all seasons some of the roads to the wilderness trailheads require a vehicle with some clearance although with the exception of the West Fork wilderness trail head a four wheel drive is not required. The road to the cabin is a well maintained county road but we do advise a four-wheel drive during winter months. During the winter the road closes to automobiles just two miles past the cabin at the National Forest boundary. Come visit our cabin; it's a great place to stay near a wonderful, quiet outdoor playground!

Owner's Profile

Owner Description

Year Purchased: 2008

We have lived in Western Colorado for nearly six years and love it for its beauty, friendly people and oustanding accessible outdoor recreation.

Why the Owner Chose Cimarron

The Big Cimarron is unique in that it has tremendous views, great recreation and yet except at peak season is fairly private compared to many areas in Colorado. It truly is a getaway, yet it's close enough to areas of culture and activity such as Ouray that one can go for a day and be back for an evening campfire.

The Unique Benefits of this Cabin

Bring your hiking boots, camera, binoculars, fishing pole, mountain bike and kayak or canoe and a good book to relax with on the deck. Or during the winter bring your snow-shoes, cross-country skies or snow-mobile or just cosy in with the warmth of the wood-stove and a good book.

Exceptional Retreat

Guest: Georgia (San Antonio, TX USA)
Date of Stay: 08/22/11 Review Submitted: 09/25/11

Light and airy cabin with gorgeous mountain views (and nighttime stars) from every window. Lots of space for 4 adults and 2 Golden Retrievers. We enjoyed our morning coffee on the sunny deck while watching birds eating from the feeders and mammals in the yard. The kitchen is well-equipped and the bath has instant hot water. Aspens and conifers line the unpaved road which runs in front of the cabin. We took early morning walks along the road, birding and being greeted by friendly horses, mules and cows in pastures full of wildflowers. Very helpful owners. We had a fabulous stay!

Wonderful Getaway!!

Guest: DebS (Red Lion, PA)
Date of Stay: 09/11/11 Review Submitted: 09/25/11

My husband and I stayed here for several days in September, 2011. We really needed a place to relax and unwind, and this was the place! It is far enough away from all of the hustle and bustle of any big city, yet close enough to Montrose where you can get almost anything you need. We bought several ready-to-cook dinners at City Market in Montrose, and we were easily able to have very cozy, delicious dinners in the cabin. But if you feel like cooking while on vacation, the kitchen is supplied with the necessary tools. The area is surrounded by beautiful scenery, and it was fun just driving around and taking it all in. I recommend the drive over Owl Creek Pass to Ridgeway... it is stunning. One of my favorite scenic spots in Colorado is a few miles west of Ridgeway, the Dallas Divide. It is definitely worth checking out! We were surprised that the hummingbirds were still in the area during our visit. They are so entertaining to watch! There is no television, no radio, no phone, no internet... it took me a little while to adjust to that, but it was great! After browsing through the DVD library, we decided to watch True Grit since a lot of that movie was filmed in the area, and we were able to recognize some of the scenery. This cabin has the most comfortable bed we've ever slept in. In fact, I emailed the owner after we returned home and asked the brand of the mattress so we can buy one just like it! The location is wonderful... we love the Cimarron area. We used the wood stove one or two evenings, just to take the chill out, and that felt wonderful. I guess an indication of a great vacation is when you don't want to go home, and that is how we felt when our time was up. We could have stayed much longer!! We would definitely stay here again, and we highly recommend this cabin. The owners are very accommodating and always answered my emails promptly.

In the past 18 years of traveling here, this was, by far, my most pleasant stay. I found the cabin charming, clean, tidy, well organized and stocked. The owners were so courteous, efficient and helpful. I hope to return soon. I give this vacation property my highest recommendation.

Peaceful getaway with close access to Silverjack Resevoir and Owl Creek Pass

Guest: Florida Girl (Santa Rosa Beach, FL, USA)
Date of Stay: 07/18/11 Review Submitted: 08/03/11

The cabin was perfect for my needs. It was located near Silver Jack Resevoir and Owl Creek Pass which are extraordinarily beautiful areas of Colorado. Great hiking and a waterfall off the Middle Fork. There was a nice porch where I could sit out and listen to the birds. The owners have supplied a hammock and a little fire pit for outdoor enjoyment. We had a rainy spell while I was there so I appreciated the DVD player a couple of nights. They have a washing machine and a clothesline. It was kind of fun hanging my clothes to dry in the sun. The decor is rustic, but nice. Very clean. The owners have made use of several Aspen tree trunks to give a "treehouse" feel to the bunk beds in the kids' room. They've also strung white lights around another tree in the living room to give the room a little magic. There was a staircase carved out of a log going up to the sleeping loft. It was quiet and I slept peacefully the entire time I was there. I also saw deer feeding in the yard several nights. I would definately recommend it to friends and hope to return soon!

Wonderful Family Experience!!!

Date of Stay: 12/25/10 Review Submitted: 01/20/11

Thanks for the wonderful stay! It was the perfect place for the weekend after Christmas. Everything worked great and the wood stove made the cabin super comfortable. The light in the Cabin is excellent and there are amazing views of the winter wonderland outside. I found good sledding with my boys and went on a great snowshoe on my own. The road to the cabin was plowed nicely and my wife went on a long walk it. It was a quiet, peaceful winter experience!

Greg, I can assure you that the cabin and our stay was PERFECT! Everything was awesome; tha cabin, the scenery, the entire experience of Southwest Colorado! Thanks again for sharing your cabin with us. We had an unexpected medical circumstance come up within my immediate family and thought it would be best to come home a little early. We can't say enough about the experience and thank you for being so gracious and understanding with the early departure. You went above and beyond the call of duty by refunding money and allowing a free night in the future. SO................hopefully we will take you up on your free night offer within the next year or so. THANKS FOR EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dissatisfied

Guest: manzanoman (Estancia, New Mexico)
Date of Stay: 09/21/10 Review Submitted: 10/05/10

We had several grievances with this cabin and the owner, the worst was he only partially returned our deposit for an unreasonable claim. The cabin is misrepresented in the pictures, it looks like it is remote and out in the middle of nowhere, but actually it is surrounded by other cabins close by and quite close to the road. On one day there was some kind of motorcycle rally happening and for two hours we had loud motorcycles going by. The bed is not a king size bed, but is two twins pushed together with an uncomfortable crack down the middle. We found dead flies on the windowsill above the bed and on the bed. The phone number the owner gives is a fax number, he doesn't seem to want to talk to you in person. The owner took back part of our deposit for drinking a few bottles of water and pop that were there. There is a quite a few food and drink items in the fridge and in the cupboards, but if you eat or drink any of them the owner will hold back part of your deposit claiming they were his. He also claimed there was evidence we brought a child (which we didn't) and he was upset and worried about possible liability consequences. Very poor customer treatment in my opinion.

Owner response:At the bottom of this response I have copied the first e-mail sent to me by this person upon his return home, which is a positive assessment of his stay at our cabin. Unfortunately, simply because I didn't bow down to his dishonesty, after I told him I used $10 of his deposit to replace numerous things he took from us he wrote the dishonest and unflattering review above. We are very generous in what we provide for this cabin including firewood, laundry detergent, spices, etc. and we clearly spell out in our literature what we provide. This person was also dishonest in filling out our rental agreement and potentially put us in legal jeopardy, was not clean and in general was not the kind of person I would ever care to rent to again. Our phone works perfectly. Our bed, made up of two very comfortable Beauty Rest mattresses is tied together with an aftermarket product that covers and minimizes the seam. Please let the overwhelming number of positive reviews speak for themselves. If we can answer any questions regarding our cabin please feel free to call. Sincerely, Greg and Carolyn, owners of the Big Cimarron Valley/Silverjack Cabin Renter's real assessment of his stay at our cabin: On Sep 25, 2010, at 2:30 PM, JIM wrote: Hi Greg, We had a great time at the cabin on the Cimarron. Back now in New Mexico. The Middle and East Fork trails up into the Uncompaghre Wilderness are without a doubt some of the best mountain country I have ever been in, and I have been all over the West. A photographer's dream! A great view from the cabin, too. Let me know if everything was found to be OK after we left and if the security deposit will be coming back soon. Thanks, Jim

Amazing!!! We absolutely loved it!!!

Guest: Lisa (Blue Springs, Missouri)
Date of Stay: 08/02/10 Review Submitted: 08/17/10

The owner was extremely quick, courteous and professional in answering all of our questions and concerns. The cabin is clean, has the comfortable feeling of being at home and has all the amenities you need. The view is just amazing. The abundance of wildlife is incredible. Although it's secluded you have the constant company of hummingbirds, the frequent visits of chipmunks and an occasional mule deer stroll through. I absolutely loved sitting by the campfire under the stars. It's so peaceful and relaxing, I could have spent my whole vacation at the cabin. There is so much to do in the area though. A variety of activities are easily reached from the cabin. Our favorites were The Black Canyon of Gunnison, fishing and the off-road trails of Ouray! There's also biking, hiking, hot springs in Ouray, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, hot air ballooning and so much more. This would be a great place for photography or painting. I just can't say enough about the cabin and the area. This was the perfect vacation for us with the exception of it not being long enough. We definitely plan on staying there again! Can't wait!!!
